She lost 112 pounds, that's one and a half pageant contestants, at most.

112 pounds is two pageant contestants? Really?

Or as they say, There is no dessert that tastes as sweet as being a thin, hot, Ms. America contestant feels. Good for her. The confidence one gains in weight loss like that, the mental benefits that come with it, are equal to the health benefits, in my opinion. Long after Ms. America is over, if she maintains her weight, she will still be benefitting from the mental gifts that kind of change brings with it.

I commend her for making the healthy choice, but I think it's retarded when people like this get on TV to talk about body image etc. They tell people "oh love your body blah blah." but she didn't. Before she was an overweight shallow person. Now she just has the body to match.

I'm surprised the Fattie Brigade isn't on here defending the 234 pound look. Aren't you Farkers attracted to the heifers like Christina Hendricks and Salma Hayek?

When people tell you to love yourself just the way you are, what they mean is don't take care of yourself so they don't have to do much work to look better than you. Never been with a woman who wanted me to take steps to improve myself, many discouraged it. Its a lot easier to sit on the couch and eat a Pizza topped with McDonald's cheeseburgers if the person you're with is right there beside you.

Not me friends, not me.

You seriously think Salma Hayek is fat? You sir have a warped sense of reality. Salma is one of the most beautiful woman in the world. Ask any man or woman. The sane ones will say she's stunning.

I'm assuming you like stick figure woman. Ones who basically look like boys. I think that says more about you than a guy thinking a woman with a couple extra pounds is hot. It's ok to step out of the closet. The world is less judgy of the gays.

She had knee problems, and the implication from the article was that it was because of her weight. So I'd say that losing weight does show she was loving, and taking care of her body. Being comfortable with your body doesn't mean you should not take care of it and go to an early grave.

Is it wrong that I thought she was way hotter in her kitchen, dressed relaxed, than she was in full dress, so to speak?

Gimme a girl in a t-shirt and a ponytail anytime before an evening gown.

Sadly, partially true.

My neighbors, who are both over 300 pounds, eat shiat every single night of the week. We see them come home with either a Pizza Hut box, Culver's bag, or MacDonald's bag. Every single night. They have a child, who obviously will be raised on this nastiness, and another on the way, who is getting its nutrients...well...it's not getting its nutrients.

I'm carrying more weight than I should, don't get me wrong, but damn, man. Cook something light once in awhile. I feel like they have just given up and are content with each other on the couch like this, night after night.

When people at school talked about her or teased her, she'd try to be their friend.

"Sometimes I made fun of myself with them," Boyce said. "It was all trying to cover up and not try to expose myself too much that I was hurting inside about my weight."

That's what I do on Fark.

I've lost about 40lbs in the last year, gradually - but did it with legal speed coupled with starvation. Since I lost it, I now maintain it with healthy diet and jogging my ass off. I figure any damage I might have done is cancelled out by healthy living now.

"It's more about setting a good example for the younger generation," Boyce said. "If you have a dream, go for it. Don't let others' perceptions hold you back."

What the fark does that mean? it's the typical kind of mouth-dribble you find coming from people who compete in things like the Miss America pageant. Nobody was holding her back from her dreams except her. The "perception" of her was of a big fat girl--which she was. She's talking like she was abused and overcame it or something. No, honey, you were just fat.

And good jerb, rudemix. I've never been fat, but I've had my share of addictive behaviors, and I know how hard it is to get over them.

Thanks a lot and that was the crux of it for me. My behavior and compulsions. I think the biggest thing I brought out of it, and why it worked was the biggest battles were all mental. When you win them it carries on in the mind in confidence and 'I can do anything!' The biggest thrill to me wasn't ever thinking "wow I look swell" or some other thing like that, it's the times I can say "I did that! On my own!" I often say to people the first thing you have to change in dieting is your mind...eating, exercise, behaviors all come after that, or they wont come at all.

Buttknuckle:

How YOU doin?

In the nutshell it was eat better, eat less, move more. The biggest step was making the mental decision and sticking to it. I really do believe most people know the basics of eating well. Either budget, or usually lack of inclination keeps us from doing so. I knew I had to get active but I overrode the fear of 'But I can't do those things because I'm a big fatass' by realizing that I didn't need to increase my activity to match some triathlete, only increase it based on my then current activity levels. I began with a mile a day usually in the morning for the metabolism kick. By time I was done I was doing 3-5 miles a day broken up over morning, noon, evening. I was never trying to get fit by exercise, only trying to up my metabolism and it worked.

By diet I just followed common sense, tempered with education. I ate 5-7 meals a day, all of them small, all of them like clockwork. Any carbs were in the morning, the more complex the better. Protein of some form at every meal and greens/vegs through the afternoon and evening. I stopped soda cold, stopped eating anything that had a wrapper other than a peel, and reduced sugars, white flours, HFCS, no fast food, no more impulse eating.

In a sense I became compulsive but I didn't let it bother me because I was equally as compulsive in my eating prior too, just in the wrong direction. What I strove for, and accomplished was technically to make my metabolism my biatch. For me I knew it was the key. I kept my walking going to up my metabolism, ate in a manner (small, frequent meals) to boost my metabolism and stopped eating things that messed with that.

Thanks again for the kind words everyone! It's a first for me on Fark ;)

My wife was around 300 pounds a year ago and her doctor told her that if she didn't lose weight she would need a liver transplant (non-alcoholic cirrhosis, the fat gets in the liver and explodes the cells causing scarring) She went on a strict medically supervised diet coupled with exercise and is now down to 160 and still losing. What's nice about this diet is that they also work with you on how to go back to eating regular food, they don't just leave you hanging.

Her liver numbers are now perfect!

So many girls look to beauty queens because they want to be like them and look like them. But my thing is that we're all unique and we're all different and not one person is going to look like the next.

Yeah, girls. It's not at all important to look like a beauty queen; we are all beautiful in our own way. That's why I worked my ass off to look like one, and now luxuriate in actually BEING one. But I loved myself just as much when I was fat, and so should you.

Not really true. People perceive your personality different the less and less attractive you are. Or I should say they don't even bother to perceive it. I've gained about 30 pounds in the last 6 months and I've noticed a DRAMATIC change in the way people are around me. Especially men. When you're fat and/or ugly the only way to win people over is with your personality and that takes time sometimes, especially when someone has already mentally assigned you as "big girl: practically subhuman".

Before she was an overweight shallow person. Now she just has the body to match.

That makes me unaccountably sad for you. If someone really cares about you, they should want you to be the best person you can be. I think I'm being very selfish ultimately, because I want my husband to be healthy and with me as long as possible.
