Well, when ya gotta fart...

2011-10-25 09:09:05 PM
Wouldn't the pressure difference make that impossible?

2011-10-25 09:09:39 PM
My guess is someone had a *severe* anxiety attack, emotions trampled logic underfoot, and he made what seemed, to him, to be a rational decision to try to leave the airplane, not realizing that it was still in the air.

Now, that wouldn't be a smart design. Emergency exits are plug style doors to prevent that very thing from happening.

For the mathy types, Cabin Pressure is usually around a 9 psi differential from inside the cabin to the outside air.

Except that is a plug type door. When you close it, it actually goes inside the cabin and then seals outward.

The doors open in, then swing out. Its impossible to open a door in flight due to the pressure difference.

This guy:

Jonathan Burton (new window)

tried to rush the cockpit, got pinned down by 8 guys, and one of them stood on his neck, killing him. Crazy story, but what I remember is his memorial talking about him being this gentle lamb that was murdered and like 3 buddies telling me about him that went to high school with him. Said the kid was a complete psycho that would just go off and attack other kids in the hallway over nothing.

/Random story, just reminded me of it, thought I'd share.

2011-10-25 09:25:44 PM
That's not an emergency door.

You would have to be a nice shade of green and have tattered clothes to get that door open.

There have been guys I've wanted to do that to on flights, but could never find seven accomplices to help.

You have to open them in, against the pressure, before you can then swing them out. They do not just swing out and you cannot open them at altitude.

No one was able to comment as to Garber's motives in trying to exit the plane.

Mr. Garber might have been able to tell us, but we didn't ask him.

What the HELL happened there? I'm assuming there's a news story behind that?

Active introvert: I hate love it when people refuse to say why they did things.

It makes things more mysterious. "You wanna know how I got these scars?..."

I remember this being all over the news when I was a kid and scaring the shiat out of me. It's amazing that the pilot landed the plane in that condition and that only one person died.

Epoxy used to hold aluminum sheets to fuselage failed due to screwup during manufacture. Having 15,000 more takeoff/landing cycles than it was designed for probably didn't help. Surprisingly only 1 fatality, and let's just say she wasn't on the plane when that pic was taken.

Actually that says that a Boeing would be easier to open, since they have pressure relief plugs to vent the pressure. Even those would be impossible to open at cruise altitude.

So a white guy tries to cause a catastrophic failure in a commercial jet, and he's charged with "disrupting the flight crew" instead of terrorism. Got it.

Thanks. I vaguely recall reading about that incident now. The death of that flight attendant is terrifying though. I can't even imagine what that experience would be like.
