Most artists get paid through touring anyway. The record companies have historically screwed them out of money from sales. If I were a musician I'd be happy that it's easier to get my music out there and if I'm touring that I don't have to work a real job.

That's the problem is finding someone good.
There are 10 billion bands out there. How can I find the good ones?

Couple good local (DFW) groups I've found lately. The Orbans, Air Review, Calhoun, Telegraph Canyon, Doug Burr, Sara Jaffe to name a few. I prefer good local music to most of the crappy on the radio.

I really really love that music that is all like 'auto-tuned'. it's so nice to be able to try and poke out my ear drums from the screeching effing noise.

/No I don't try to poke out my ear drums, but the mute button is worn out for the tv and I no longer listen to radio.
//Crap singers and auto-tuning and greedy pigs, killed music.

Britney Spears: real or fake, it's still shiat singing.

Make your own music, screw the corporate stuff. Sure it will suck, but at least you can remove that otherwise non-existent song that's stuck in your head.

I seem to end up doing that every time I see Neil Finn/Crowded House in concert. He's always had terrific opening acts for the 20+ years I've been seeing him live. The last one was Lawrence Arabia. Great album if you like Beatlesque pop, and they killed it live.

I just got back from Cate Le Bon & St. Vincent. I'd recommend both, but St. Vincent especially. I haven't been wowed by many new albums but Strange Mercy did it, and the live show was even better.

GAT_00: Let me know when you find something.

Depends on what you like. Tastes vary widely and the great thing about music today is that you have music for virtually every taste. For example, every band mentioned in this thread so far sounds like complete sh*t to me. But if I were to link to newer bands that I've been liking recently such as Mitochondrion or Portal, I'm sure that various members of this community would sh*t on me for my crappy taste.

I don't know where I'm going with this. I guess all I have to say is: #1 rule of music, everyone but you hast sh*t taste in music.

Actually more of an interesting article than I thought it would be.

I find interesting music on turntable.fm. That is when some asshat isn't trying to throw some dubstep in. WTF is that shiat. Seriously no one has been able to explain the appeal in any way, shape or form.

You could just hang out in bars with local acts. Sure, in terms of actual craft they probably aren't great, but people are hardwired to subconsciously communicate with each other when in close proximity and that makes things seem better.

It's why people go on about "man, they kill in concert" about objectively shiat bands, and why a seat at a live theater costs 50$ a show and one at a movie costs 8$. Might as well take advantage of your own psychology if you're that hard up finding a decent radio station or whatever.

2011-10-26 01:53:48 AM
Programs like Pandora and Slacker are the future of how people discover new music.

I can't possibly imagine a better way to discover new music.

/Although, I quite romanticize the olden days - where you find a cassette at a garage sale, that may or may not BLOW your mind. Or that punk kid showing off some record he stole in his leaky basement, "You're going to love this, dude!". Or spending your $5 on a random record you've never heard of, based on its album art alone.

i usually listen to every new album uploaded on spinner.com to see if i like what's new instead of having someone tell me somethings great (cause bon iver and grizzly bear are not)

Use Pandora and set up a station with bands you like and it'll start sneaking other stuff in there that you might like. It lets you give thumbs up and down to what you listen to and over time its predictions get pretty good. Also go to Amazon and put in a band/album you like and it'll say something like "customers who bought this also bought music from these bands:" and it'll have a list. Listen to their stuff and see if you like it. Branch out from there.

It's pretty easy.
