After reading a few excerpts, all I have to say to Russell is: good luck with that.

I thought this was going to be about Dick Cheney.

For a sports story, I would have guessed Donald Sterling.

FTFA: But want to know the truth? I know that the game don't owe me a damn thing."

Wow, you're going out on a limb with that one, JaMarcus. Considering you did pretty much nothing and walked away with $39 million, yeah, I don't think the game owes you shiat.

Tom Cable practically shoved that Purple Drank into his hand! It's not his fault he's out of shape and undisciplined, he has sleep apnea!

No, he's well loved, see the hockey thread below this one.

Prediction for JaWalrus: he signs with the Eagles in the offseason, plays mediocre as a backup next year when Vick is out with injuries, and they trade him to some other hapless franchise (the Browns?) for two 2nd round picks.

The opening suggests he deserves another look, and as soon as he is quoted he blows it.

It's not the Purple Drank, work ethic, or overeating, it's SLEEP APNEA!

Seeing as how it's been almost 2 years and he hasn't played ANY football (UFL, CFL, Arena), it is quite clear to me that he has no love for the game. Also evidenced by actually watching him play. But that chubby S.O.B. could throw it a country mile, just nowhere near his target.

I have to wonder if being constantly portrayed as the worst QB ever didn't help break the guy as well. I mean, it can't be good for your confidence to be able to Google "worst draft pick ever" and find yourself on the first page.

Carson Palmer got traded for 2 first rounders after not seeing the field for over a year and years of being a mediocre quarterback. Russel, if playing decently, would probably draw a first round pick.

FTFA: "Things weren't going right, and it felt sometimes like everything fell back on me. I take some responsibility, but I was one guy.... I may have missed a throw, but I didn't give up 42 points, I didn't miss a block."

You're the QB. That's what happens. When things go wrong for the Packers, the Patriots, or Colts (usually) they turn to their leaders (Rodgers, Brady, and Mannining, respectively) for strength. There's a reason QBs get called the on-field general. Kick everyone's ass over the line! Lead by example. WIN!

You're nuts if you think Palmer has been anything but mediocre since 06. He's been more of a game manager than someone that carries a team to victory.

You're nuts if you think Palmer is a "game manager." We're not talking about Rex Grossman, Bruce Gradkowski, etc. here. And the statistical drop-off from '06 to '09-'10 is not as horrific as everyone is making it out to be. In a league where Tim Tebow and John Beck can start by coaches' decisions, Carson Palmer is a freaking godsend.

Entertherat: There are many ways to fix your rep and get another job in the NFL.

Blaming your coach for playcalling and teammates for missed blocks, I would wager, is not one of them.

Hey twatwaffle, he makes a valid point. He isn't the one dropping passes and missing blocks. He isn't the one who can't tackle.

You're football retarded. Palmer is not the QB he was in 06. He IS a game manager now and has been the past few seasons. You can go and SEE the difference in 06 Palmer and Palmer last year. It's clear that he wasn't the caliber QB last season than he was in 06. Also, yes that drop off is bad. Next you'll say but one year he only played 4 games to help prove that the drop off isn't bad.

As a psych major... I've heard some things about life coaches. Mostly that they don't know anything (you don't need any degree to be one), they tend to just suck up to the clients to keep getting money, etc.

His life coach sounds like a completely clueless asshat in this interview. Part of the process is that you're supposed to help your client recognize their weaknesses and work on them. This guy is just an enabler, allowing Russell to just use the "I have sleep apnea" excuse to justify his behavior. The fact that he tells the reporter to ask Russell about his sleep apnea... what the hell?!?

The decline is perfectly in line with what you would expect given the decrease in talent around him.

06: Rudi Johnson, Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Chris Henry.
10: Cedric Benson, Terrell Owens, Chad Ochocinco, Jordan Shipley.

So you swap out a decent running back for "three yards is enough for me" Benson, watch Chad Johnson become the Ochostinko who is going to get cut from the Patriots, replace one of the best #2 receivers of the last 10 years with a player who can't even get a scout to his work out now, and you expect Palmer to put up the exact same numbers he did before? My point is that without making a modest adjustment for age and a huge one for the decrease in talent, people are taking a giant dump over Carson Palmer like he's some sort of has-been/never was who can't play football.

/And let's continue to keep this discussion away from the one half of football in a system he had only three days to learn this week.
