Treatment--any treatment-- for pedophiles only works if the pedophile wants to be treated. Because most of what's going on in the molester isn't primarily physical desire (the need to have sex) but the need to have sexual gratification with young children, the only thing you're going to achieve with castration of any kind is a reduction in sexual release. That's good if the individual is highly motivated to work on the OTHER, underlying issues, but if he's not, he'll continue to do what he's been doing, and just not be able to ejaculate afterward.

Actually, removing the stimulus that makes the action pleasureable does bring a halt to the action. Take alcoholics, for example: If you treat them with naltrexone, they no longer get the "high" from drinking and will stop on their own. Likewise, if a pedophile is chemically castrated they cannot have the same sort of desire as they would prior to the castration.

In short, it's a hardware fix.

I've read studies where they showed that castration is not an effective deterrent. There have been cases of castrated criminals assaulting or performing their previous acts with toys/objects. I'm not going to google any of these terms, as i'm at work but I know the studies are out there.

A significant amount of sexual predators are into it for the power/authority of the situation rather than the physical sexual act. They get into it with the idea of them having power over their victim or the idea that the victim looks to them as knowledgeable. It can start with a slightly younger partner, or fantasy and eventually progresses into the illegal (under 18's.)
