Gyrfalcon: ampoliros: It's a slow news day when a neighborhood altercation makes the paper.

Tomorrow there will be a story about some kid falling out of a tree and breaking his arm.

Next week: Kid trips on carpet, skins knee!

Playground fights are news? When I was a kid there was a fight where one kid was losing and picked up a brick knocked the other kid unconscious. I doubt the story even made it to the next block ([shrugs] city life).

namegoeshere: TwoFrenchBulldogs: namegoeshere: A HS kid just died here during a game. It was a legal hit, though.

/poor kid who hit him, having to live with that.

and this is why my kids aren't going to be allowed to play football...or anything else with an unreasonably high risk of concussions or other serious damage. yes, i know you can get severely hurt doing damned near anything, but statistically, there are much safer sports to play and the kiddies will just have to live with that

I try very hard not to be Bubble Wrap Mommy, my kids run outside and play with sticks and things, buit this one go to me. His parents asked in lieu of flowers for donations to the school's football program. I thought that was odd - donating money to support the the thing that killed him.

wow. yep, definitely ironic. a bit bothersome i agree.

i completely agree that wrapping kids in swaddling and never letting them do anything is ludicrous. i do want my kids to have fun, get dirty, be active, and learn sportsmanship; but everyone's gotta draw the line somewhere. just because American football is popular doesn't make it a great idea for your children's health or you an overprotective parent if you decide it's not worth the risks.

Mono + Ampicillin + contact sport = ruptured spleen. Bet the kid had something cooking or shouldn't have been playing.

As I understand it, the older kid tackled the younger kid while the game was in play, and then after the play the 12 year old flipped out and decked the 14 year old kid between downs when the game was not in play.

I don't know if this is true, but I suspect the 12 year old hit the 14 year old in the back or blindsided him, and otherwise wouldn't have been able to take him if he knew the hit was coming.

A ruptured spleen is a substantial medical expense; if no one had been seriously injured this would be a non-story. Now, it is just another fight over money, like so many other things...

As someone who was bullied as a kid, I say good on him for standing up for himself.

CSB

High school leather class, one of the school bullies was trying to push my buttons. I'm Irish, so I have a smart mouth and don't know when to shut it. I end up pissing this kid off so bad he puts me a choke hold. As I'm starting to see little sparkly lights and the whole room sounds kinda tinny, I figure "shiat just got real" and this kid isn't playing around anymore. Out of instinct, I grab the nearest thing I can get my hands on, which just happens to be a six hole leather punch and I jab into his back, leaving four perfectly square little holes in his skin. He lets go, we get sent to the office.

As we're sitting there, he's fuming and trying to act like he didn't just get stabbed by a band nerd. He leans over to me and says, "Just wait til later..." I look back at him and say, "biatch, I just STABBED you in front of a room full of people. Do you REALLY want to see what I'll do to you when there are NO witnesses?"

He left me alone after that.

Mom told me I was wrong to stab him, but she understood why I did it. Dad asked why there were only 4 holes and told me I was probably only going to get a C+ at best for the half-assed effort.

Same here. Some guys in shop class started playing keep-away with my sack lunch and the lead bully poked a hole in it with a switchblade leaking the contents onto the floor. As you can imagine, the shop teacher and my football hero friend arrived in time to stop them from hurting me. Luckily, this fueled my desire in auto / body repair.

Does not look like we have the full story, but as the facts stand, looks like a non-story to me. Apologies, 12-year-old's parents take care of what insurance does not cover, and kid does some extra chores to teach him to control anger even if he is made fun of.

If the 14-year-old has some history of bullying/instigation, different story, but the available facts do not support that at present.

End of Line.

Jesus chirst we need to get rid of shopclasses.

My husband flipped a heavy shop table over on a guy when we were in High school. It broke BOTH this kids legs. There were multiple other fights that resulted in broken bones in that same shopclass over the four years I was at that school.

Save the kids ! Ban shop class !
