Great, and maybe when he's through with that he can hold some bankers legally accountable for ripping the country off. Madoff needs more company in lockup.

But in the spirit of compromise, it will end up with worse rates, greater restrictions, and a tax cut on the wealthy.

I know some people for whom you could forgive 99% of their student debt, and they would still biatch about the 1%

Well, a large number of the protestors have stated that as one of the problems they have. I agree though it isn't at all what OWS is working towards.

This isn't new. He's just talking about it. PSLF and IBR have been around since 2007. Loan consolidation has been around for even longer.

This isn't a new plan, it's PR on a very, very good existing plan.

Why are we pretending like the GOP would ever pass this?

Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some smelly tart threw a dimebag at you.

Seriously, for all the complaints about Obama, and there are many, he has put out a few tangibly useful things. If it wasn't for the COBRA subsidy in the stimulus bill, I wouldn't have been able to afford insurance that year, even on COBRA.

DamnYankees: Why are we pretending like the GOP would ever pass this?

It was passed in 2007. Bush threatened to veto it, but the Senate got enough votes to overturn.

In 2010, with the Health Care Reform act, the adjustments were made that lowers the percentages to 10% of for payments and 20 years till forgiveness, but that wasn't scheduled to happen until 2014.

He's just upping the time table from 2014 to 2012, which means THESE students graduating now will be able to take advantage.

DamnYankees: Why are we pretending like the GOP would ever pass this?

"The White House apparently believes it has found a legal way to do this without legislation," Jaret Seiberg, an analyst for MF Global Inc.'s Washington Research Group. "That means House Republicans cannot block the initiative."

So, I'm currently a grad student with about $30,000 in student loans. I don't have to start paying them back yet (and my parents have offered to pay, which.. .. is a thought that makes me uncomfortable, actually, but I think it will be difficult for me to *stop* them). Would it make sense for me to consolidate once this cheaper rate appears? I think my current loan provider is Great Lakes.

(I'm not taking out any *more* loans, thankfully. Hooray for RA's and TA's. And I'm in a field (Physics, specifically nanophysics) that should make me fairly employable...)

"In an obvious response to" meaning "Having nothing at all to do with"

2011-10-25 04:05:54 PM
"Last year, the federal government got out of the business of guaranteeing student loans made by private banks -- including Stafford loans -- and moved to start offering loans directly to students. But lots of graduates are still paying off those federally backed loans, originated by private student lenders such as Sallie Mae and Nelnet.

The proposal would impact students with both direct loans and federally backed loans, allowing students to consolidate loans held by private banks into direct loans."

How dare the gub'mint take over federal student loans. Socialism!

No really, that's what the TP'ers said about it..

Felgraf: Would it make sense for me to consolidate once this cheaper rate appears?

It is not a cheaper interest rate. If the loans are pre-2006, you can lock in the pre-2006 rate, which is variable and currently set between 1.77%-2.87%, depending on various factors.

if you only have $30,000 this won't really effect you.

Why not just focus on bringing college tuition costs down so kids don't have to borrow 200K? Low interest loans are still loans. He's just giving you a drop of lube before the University rapes you into submission.
