Seriously, for all the complaints about Obama, and there are many, he has put out a few tangibly useful things. If it wasn't for the COBRA subsidy in the stimulus bill, I wouldn't have been able to afford insurance that year, even on COBRA.

So, I'm currently a grad student with about $30,000 in student loans. I don't have to start paying them back yet (and my parents have offered to pay, which.. .. is a thought that makes me uncomfortable, actually, but I think it will be difficult for me to *stop* them). Would it make sense for me to consolidate once this cheaper rate appears? I think my current loan provider is Great Lakes.

(I'm not taking out any *more* loans, thankfully. Hooray for RA's and TA's. And I'm in a field (Physics, specifically nanophysics) that should make me fairly employable...)

Well, a large number of the protestors have stated that as one of the problems they have. I agree though it isn't at all what OWS is working towards.

Excessive student loan debt is a symptom, not a cause. Treating a symptom won't make you healthy.

Why not just focus on bringing college tuition costs down so kids don't have to borrow 200K? Low interest loans are still loans. He's just giving you a drop of lube before the University rapes you into submission.

This isn't a new plan, it's PR on a very, very good existing plan.
