Having checked out the route on Streetview it looks like a good track. If they don't screw it up by putting a chicane in every hundred yards....

2011-10-25 02:14:37 PM
Surprised they'd go down to weehawken. If i remember right, the road around the meadowlands complex was designed as a race track, but it hasn't been used that way (legally) in 30 years.

Will Orange be the sponsors?

Too soon, man. Too soon.

What's the over/under on some Guido telling his girlfriend that he can beat those pussies and pulling out on the track to race with his IROC-Z?

i really wish F1 would take off in the US. it really is an amazing sport. i've only been to two races - monaco '96 and indy '00 -- but i would definitely go again.

Aren't they building some massive track in Texas for F1? Are they planning on having two US races?

2011-10-25 03:42:48 PM
YES!!! im def going!

I'm VERY okay with this!

This is sweet.

Question for those in the know: How do they transport the cars? Particularly to races far from Europe like Singapore, do they rent out cargo planes or put them on a boat? The shipping insurance must be immense.

Yes, they are going to have two U.S. races (the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin and the Grand Prix of America in N.J.), which is what the teams want.

They put them on boats.

F1 isn't American enough, and it has to compete against the established NASCAR and IndyCar series. Crap like what happened at the 2005 US Grand Prix doesn't help either.

Personally, I always found IndyCar to be the more entertaining brand of open wheel racing. F1 feels to me like a very fast parade. That being said, I am sure it is like the NFL: I may not actually care too much for the sport, but going to a game/race would be pretty damn cool.

Monaco 96 was one of the most spectacular races I have ever seen. It was fantastic but not all races are that exciting!

This course could be good though. Street racing is always fun.

Sort of. From what I've heard, the teams just want a race in Vegas (a lot of them are big gamblers). They only pushed for a second race in hopes they'd get one in Vegas.

/Don't see this race happening, as I believe another race would need to be dropped to make room.

"They compare it to Spa in Belgium," he said, referring to the challenging circuit at Francorchamps, Belgium. But he said it "will have the feel of" the equally famous Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo.

hahahahaha...really?

I imagine they are referring to the course, not the overall ambience.

I do too, it's very exciting watching the racing in the streets. And living in the area, I'm definitely going to this.

They should race through the Lincoln and back too. That would be the cat's ass.

Resolute: F1 isn't American enough, and it has to compete against the established NASCAR and IndyCar series.

Yeah, it's tough to crack into the US auto racing market when it's populated by country bumpkins who are enthralled by a sport founded to give moonshiners something fun to do when they weren't being chased by police.

2011-10-25 04:05:12 PM
Looking at the layout, it seems to have the typical Herman Tilke sweeping corners to somewhat long straights (á la Valencia and Singapore).

/Hope to go to Austin next November...

2011-10-25 04:06:03 PM
Yeah, oval racing isn't really a thing outside the U.S. It's racing's version of soccer vs. football.

I wonder what, if any, effect this will have on the Austin F1 event.

I really wish F1 would come to Road America in Elkhart Lake. That track has F1 written all over it.

at least the massive elevation change will be different than most street circuits

2011-10-25 04:18:00 PM
So they will match what we can get from some 90's games.

Didn't you know that the cars can fly as well?

/I think the cars are disassembled and shipped in crates

None. Austin is officially in the calendar for 2012.

I went to all the GPs at IMS back in the day. I'm glad F1 is coming back, although selfishly I wish it was at IMS so I had another day to charge for parking. One thing I thought and a big complaint about management here was they were charging too little for tickets ($75 for 3 day GA). Many folks would come over from Europe and watch the race since it was cheaper than at home. I wonder how much they are going to jack up ticket prices to afford Bernie's $30m sanction fee. Also, very skeptical that everyone says no public money is going to this. Sadly, I'm not very trusting in that department.

It should probably be noted that my immediate reaction was, "farkers come with copious amounts of alcohol, that might not be such a terrible idea..."

Shortly followed by, "wait, yes, yes it is..."

Has anyone ever looked up the proposed CART Race in philadelphia Paul Newman was pushing for years? Tell me that F1 cars doing 200 mph up the parkway after blasting up kelly drive at 140 wouldnt be.... Well, automotive nirvana.

Just think of it.... Helicopter shots of F1 cars screaming past boat house row

/I can dream can't I?

The flaming cars will make nice replacements for where the Twin Towers used to fit in the skyline.

Electriclectic: I wonder what, if any, effect this will have on the Austin F1 event.

The only thing I can think of is scheduling. The 2012 Austin race is scheduled for November. The article mentions June 2013 as a target date for the NY/NJ race. This is likely due to the fact that the Canadian GP takes place in June. So there may be a movement to push the Austin race up to June to try to do all three stops in North America consecutively. Then again, the current plan (i.e. 2012) is to do Austin and Brazil at the end of the season and Canada in June, which makes a certain amount of sense. Moreover, I seriously doubt that F1 would be dumb enough to schedule a race in Texas in June (although that was the early rumor, likely fueled by the Canadian GP scheduling). So my guess is that NY/NJ won't have any impact on Austin.

iamskibibitz: Austin

Hopefully November is late enough. It's pushing 90 today. But yeah, a typical November in Austin is awesome.

Money-wise, the state comptroller said that they don't see any effect on the funding coming from the state and city.

I would guess that the Austin race stays late in the year back-to-back with the Brazil GP.

I'm gonna try to go to the race in Austin next year. My in-laws live in San Antonio, not too far off from there.

It should build interest in the fall race. Fans will see the race in the spring on TV then see the commercials for the Austin race and think "hey this looks like fun, let's go to that race."

HarpuaMM: Didn't you know that the cars can fly as well?

Too soon, dude. Too soon.

That's cool and all, but...

Why don't they just go back to racing at Watkins Glen? Am I missing something here?
/Still, not a bad idea if it's executed properly.

2011-10-25 05:30:53 PM
FDR to Harlem River to West Side Highway to Battery Park Tunnel? Can we make this happen just to confound traffic in the city for an entire day? Toss in the risk of flying off course and drowning.

2011-10-25 05:34:23 PM
I can't wait to see all drunken cokehead skanks at this F1 race. It'll be a welcome relief from the drunken methhead skanks at my usual NASCAR races.

Glad the US is getting two F1 events, just wish one of them was on the west coast. Laguna Seca is in my back yard. CART used to be awesome here.

FTFY. Last Indy Meadowlands GP was in 1991.

Dobbs: [Road America] has F1 written all over it.

Oh, hell yes, F1 cars on Road America would be awesome, but there's no way they'd let it in nowadays without major changes. Should've done it in 1981 after they left Watkins Glen (or even 1989 after Detroit).

digistil: From what I've heard, the teams just want a race in Vegas (a lot of them are big gamblers). They only pushed for a second race in hopes they'd get one in Vegas.

And what, exactly, was going through their heads that led them to believe that they'd get a race in Vegas in the timeframe FIA apparently wanted it (next to Canada)? That would be absolute hell that would make Malaysia seem pleasant.

/ I guess they could run the old Caesars course
// Mirage has decent air conditioning

2011-10-25 05:48:02 PM
When I first heard about these rumors, I went on Google Earth to figure out what the course could be and I almost nailed it exactly. I like that it has a fair amount of elevation change and the streets look wide enough as is to make it work without major improvements other than resurfacing.

With that said, I don't know how well this will work. We're probably looking at this race going back to back with Montreal so one or both races will be hurt by both races being so close to each other (6.5 hr drive through Albany).

/Planning vacation to Austin for USGP next year
