Looks a lot like the area around the Long Valley Caldera (except a MUCH higher base elevation).

1 or 2 cm a year? What the hell were they smoking? Sure thats fast, but its not unheard of. Actual active volcanos inflate much much more rapidly... stupid article is stupid.

Most volcanos are not 43 miles wide.

From the article

De Silva said it appears that local volcanoes hoard magma for about 300,000 years before they blow

And then

Uturuncu last erupted about 300,000 years ago.

The Onanist: I'm just waiting on the one in Yellowstone to blow...

Won't matter. If the one in Bolivia is close to the same size (DNRTFA), you'll know it when it goes off... and you'll only live a few hours longer than if the one in Yellowstone went off.

This suckers gonna blow, and when it does it will spread a long dormant virus in its ash that will reanimate the recently dead starting the zombie apocalypse.

Remember, you heard it from me first.

From the comments:
Umm...I'm no geologist, but...I'm willing to bet money that the reason it's rapidly expanding is because it's going to blow its top soon

simple yet poetic

Lines straight out of a disaster movie:

"Uturuncu is surrounded by one of the most dense concentrations of supervolcanoes on the planet."

"It's very circular. It's like a big bull's-eye"

"Everything is so well preserved. There's no biology to get in the way of your observations."

One should take into account that predictions in regards to geology are all about averages. Thousands of years may go by before an eruption, and in geological time that's only an eye blink.

My bet is this sucker errupts in December 2012. The Mayans lived right on top of this sucker, so obviously they were smarter than folks have recently given them credit for.
