So they are adding it to the free and reduced meal program in public schools?

2011-10-25 11:02:06 AM
It's not already?

2011-10-25 11:02:26 AM
Why not? The bars in my town open their doors at that hour for the third-shifters and random shamblers.

FTFA:

The bill up for a vote Tuesday would allow for grocery and liquor stores across the state to start selling beer and liquor beginning at 6 a.m. Current law doesn't allow sales before 8 a.m.

I'm a tad surprised. Here in The People's Republic of Washington, you can already buy beer and wine at 6AM. But if you want booze, you have to wait until one of the lousy state liquor stores open.

I don't understand why there are even certain times when you can or can't buy alcohol. Could anyone explain why?

2011-10-25 12:48:43 PM
It's just cereal in a can.

2011-10-25 12:49:29 PM
Only if combined with fried chicken and watermelon.

2011-10-25 12:49:51 PM
But you still can't purchase it (from a store) after 9pm.

Impromptu get-together with friends run a little late and feel like running to the corner store for a bottle of (insert Fark worthy nightcap) to wind down? Nope. You gotta go to a bar.

Beer, it's not just for breakfast anymore.

Antequated, nonsensical laws?

Really pissed me off a few years ago when I went to pick up some beer on the way to tailgating at the Bears game and the damn store couldn't sell alcohol until 11 AM. Seriously, WTF.

That's f*cked up.

In WA, you can buy beer until 2AM.

But really, it's because anti-alcohol people have stronger lobbies and pro-alcohol people are too busy getting drunk enjoying their lives.

Most of the places in my town close by 10, some are open til midnight, but the only places past that are gas stations, and they are only allowed to sell beer (until 1 am).

You want screwed up Liquor Laws? in Georgia you can buy Beer Wine and Liquor 24/7 Monday thru Saturday, but don't you dare want to get a six pack on Sunday Afternoon.

According to the article, the law would only apply to liquor sold for off-premises consumption, like package liquor stores. So, as an olde phart, I will just tell you that in my day we had to walk to the liquor store 10 miles, uphill . . . , no, wait, that was school. Oh, yeah! We had to plan ahead and buy our liquor the day before. Believe it or not, it used to be that all stores closed at night in most cities.

Having said that, grocery stores and others outlets should be allowed to sell liquor whenever they're open for business. Not being allowed to do so is a huge inconvenience for clerks and staff. We used to have that around here and the store would be open but there were curtains pulled down in front of the beer cooler and the whole liquor aisle would be blocked. Idiocy.

Certain Christians.

Also to blame:

Big government hacks......like the ones here in Washington. It's not like we have state liquor stores because we're in the Bible Belt.

I guess I don't have that bad of a drinking problem, since I didn't realize you couldn't buy beer at 6 in the morning. /wisconsin resident, too.

In Wisconsin it's because of the Tavern Guild (or League, or whatever) protecting their business. If you're going to be drinking, you're going to be doing it in one of their establishments.

Nevermind that Wisconsin has the highest drunk driving rates in the country, we should totally force people to have to leave their homes to drink. The solution is you just end up always having to be prepared with a well stocked fridge.

Malt liquor and chocolate cake. It has all the nutrition for a day.

Here in VA we've got ABC stores with horrible hours.

Like any good Wisconsinite you need to have enough on hand to last through the Apocolypse. That's always been my plan. And really in most places it's the municipality making it more constrictive. If they don't touch the state mandate of 9PM for booze and midnight for beer (stores with both have to close at 9) it's not that great of a hardship. Speaking of which, I'm due to give the people who own Discount their latest installment on the grankid's college fund...how they're closed at 2 on Sundays is an even greater travesty.

At the risk of oversimplification, blanket statements, etc., it's pretty much a throwback to religious colonial attitudes (real or imagined).

IMHO it's been integrated into a Commie conspiracy to control our lifestyles and prevent autonomous culture change.

As a non-drinker in Wisconsin of all places, I'm all for it: 6AM sales make it easier for third shift workers who have it hard enough already

Plus you can buy it at a drive-through window, and state liquor stores don't exist.

The_Sponge: I'm a tad surprised. Here in The People's Republic of Washington, you can already buy beer and wine at 6AM.

It's the WI tavern league -- the alcoholic's version of a special-interest lobbyist. They've arranged it so that in WI you can drink in a bar from 6 AM until 2 AM (or later on weekends and holidays), but you can only buy off-premises liquor between 8 AM and 9 PM.

Antiquated laws like this (that dictate when and where we can buy booze) are one of many reasons other countries laugh at us.
