Don't worry, they'll be all over the Internet talking about how "the 1%" closed down the bank to keep them from withdrawing their money.

2011-10-25 10:44:08 AM
This bank will have a blockade of police all around; no one will get to enter.

what a shiatty bank, closed on Saturday...

Same thing happened here in Charlotte, BofA HQ no less. The reason given by most of the protesters to the local news was they had jobs to go to Mon-Fri and couldn't make it out.

So much for the 99%ers being bums that should get a job. That talking point is not going to go well for the Republicans in the long run.

I'm not sure about you, but MY bank is open on Saturday.

Geez, I hope the American financial system can handle the collective $524.34 withdrawal!

It's Guy Fawkes day, and the idea was that everyone would remove their money by November 5. But I think the November 5 was just randomly chosen, not because it had significance somewhere.

My bank is open on Saturdays. It's one of the extra evil ones too.

Remember remember the 5th of November.

Account closures, reason and plot.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that poor planning skills may be a partial explanation for why these individuals are having so much trouble getting ahead.

2011-10-25 11:52:09 AM
Um, don't a lot of banks have Saturday hours?

2011-10-25 11:52:36 AM
I find it amazing that the Occupiers have 24,000 members who have money at Wells Fargo.

2011-10-25 11:53:10 AM
had to spread mine over a few weeks due to havign recurring bills I needed to have adjusted. Still, all but about 1.5K of my money was removed from BOA and put into a local credit union. Just need to get my car insurance and the student loan payments moved over, and I can withdraw the last bits.

ramblinwreck: Um, don't a lot of banks have Saturday hours?

Downtown branches often don't, because none of their customers are downtown on Saturday, either.

One of the more enjoyable parts is where they tell people to withdraw their money. Do they even have the slightest clue that if a mass bank withdrawal were to take place - even just 10% of the population - they'd quick realize the bank does not, nor ever did have that money... not even enough to cover 10% of the population's bank balances.

Nah, they'll all come in, then undercover cops will start causing a scene so they have cause to arrest everyone.

If they can't show up, I question their commitment. They're just hobbyist protestors.

I'm closing my account today with my bank. Already opened one at a local credit union, refinanced the car with them and will save about 2,000 over the life of the loan plus they lowered the payment(I'll pay it off way before the term is over).

The biggest hassle was switching things over online. But as a plus, we finally setup auto pay on most of the bills.

So, thanks big banks for instituting these fees. You lost a couple grand from one customer over a $3.00 fee!

Given the Occupiers' roots in Anonymous, I'm not sure that's a safe assumption.

I can't wait until credit unions have to start charging fees because of all of the people flooding their branches who run their balance down to $20 bucks right before pay day, and call the 800# 5 times a week to make sure they can afford a pack of smokes.

FWIW - whether it happens on a single day or over a period of time (I'm taking a month to 6 weeks to phase my checking from one bank to another), the impact will still be the same.

One badly planned symbolic protest is tanked, sure, but overall, it's still an effective strategy to diminish the power of large banks.

People that do that probably aren't going to take the time and hassle to change banks. And if they do, they'll fark it up and close the account while they have outstanding checks or something.

I think that's the point, actually: to highlight the perceived problem with fractional-reserve banking by deliberately initiating a bank run. Cue the pic with Mario, the mushroom, and the goombas.

It was something I saw on reddit or somewhere like that. I don't know how well it caught on, but everyone seems to be headed that way anyhow. It may be connected to Anonymous, but they weren't pushing for everyone to do this ON Guy Fawkes day, just by November 5--probably so they wouldn't be accused of trying to cause a run on the banks.

Am i the only one that thinks a mass, organized withdrawal of cash, on a specific day, from a specific bank, would create a bonanza for punks and thieves?

\Maybe a good thing the bank will be closed.

I'm sure they do if they've read any history at all concerning the Great Depression. Still, I would like to see it happen. The system is corrupt; it needs to be destroyed. Then we can work on rebuilding it into something that isn't a total clusterfark.

$3.00 fee? Count yourself lucky.

A month or so back I got hit with about a hundred dollars' in overdraft fees and late fees because...

I canceled by XBLA Gold subscription, but Microsoft decided to charge me anyways for some reason. Microsoft didn't have my new debit card number, it had been changed a few months back due to fraud/identity theft concerns, so they attempted to charge my old number. Chase, in all its wisdom, gave them my new number without so much as a phone call to verify the transaction or let me know. Then, I wasn't told a thing until a week and a half later when they surcharged me for having a negative balance and their collections department called me on a Sunday freaking morning.

Went to Chase on Monday, complained and closed my accounts on the spot.

That's funny. Wells-Fargo says the bank right across the street from the protest meet-up location is open from 9am-1pm on Saturday.
