The sound you hear is Jeremy Brett rotating in his grave.

No #2 SHERLOCK!

I am cautiously optimistic about this movie.

If that is how you react with giddy excitement I'd hate to hear the story of when you lost your virginity.

Quasar: If that is how you react with giddy excitement I'd hate to hear the story of when you lost your virginity.

You mistakenly speak of that in the past tense, methinks.

Rufus_T_Firefly: The sound you hear is Jeremy Brett rotating in his grave.

But Zombie Arthur Conan Doyle is going "FINALLY! They ditched that stupid Deerstalker cap!"

Ritchie said pretty explicitly that his source was the books themselves, not previous movie/TV portrayals.

The trailer only showed her a couple times. Way to pay attention.

WTF Indeed: You mean Sherlock? Because that's a perfect show.

Saw that recently after all the hype. A little let down. Watson was okay, but Cumberbatch as Sherlock was a little bit off.

Also, the second episode with the Chinese mafia grated on my nerves. Seriously, what the hell?

Ah yes, because when I reread "A Study in Scarlet", it's the martial arts, explosions and machine guns that really stand out as the Holmes we've been missing throughout the cinematic adaptations. Not to mention: Where the fark is the cocaine?

And we are done here.

Question: when will Guy Ritchie finally admit it and start dating guys?

2011-10-25 01:56:49 PM
Wow...that's...a...lot...of...slow...motion.

Already getting a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe off of this:

First film was OK only because everybody expected it to be completely awful and it wasn't.

Subsequent entries will meet everybody's expectations for the first film and be completely awful.

Want 2nd series of SHERLOCK, not this crap.

HairBolus: Steampunk - the new cool

Steampunk is the Eurotrash of Nerd-dom.

And I agree with Bag of Hammers (there's an odd-sounding statement): too much slow motion in the trailer. It wasn't too overused in the first film, but this one feels a wee bit more Zack Snyder than Guy Ritchie. Of course, I base my full opinion on movies solely on the trailers because I'm sure marketing people know what they're doing.

I thought the first one was carried by RDJ. Th eonly scene that really made me roll my eyes was the butcher shop scene where what's-her-name was hung up by the wrists.

I hope Moriarty is written well. If he is, the movie will work. If not, it will be bad.

YAY

2011-10-25 02:17:31 PM
I'm a huge fan of the stories, and I really enjoyed the first movie. Wasn't looking for a literal take on the character, but expected some entertainment. The movie delivered, and it looks like this one will too.

/Assume this one ends with Holmes "dead"

as someone who read all the stories and loved the bbc series with Jeremy Brett, I gotta say that I actually did enjoy the recent movie with Robert Downey Jr so i'm looking forward to this.

They didn't make Watson a pathetic twat which pleased me. In the books Watson is very intelligent which highlights Sherlock's genius even more. Any one would look really smart next to most cinematic Watsons. Watson on the current Sherlock and the two with Brett on TV excluded.

2011-10-25 02:37:18 PM
I can't say that I recall Sir Arthur being so enamored of explosions and the like.

RDJ was great in the first one. I for one am very excited for the new one.

A bit off? I guess it depends on how you expect the character to be. But I think he is perfect for the role. He is a brilliant person but instead of being respected for it he kind of shoves it in peoples faces, sometimes not knowingly, and it sets him apart. Everyone knows he is brilliant but not many want to acknowledge it or deal with him.

I think that interpretation works well for the modern setting it is in.

deadsanta: Where the fark is the cocaine?

The stuff he was drinking that was meant for eye surgery.

My only problem with the movie was the remote control device. Why was it even needed in the first place? There were henchmen guarding the gas machine, why not just sync watches and have someone set it off?

2011-10-25 02:46:59 PM
Awesome. Loved the first one.

I like when they slow down his thought process and explain what he's about to do.

WTF Indeed: You mean Sherlock? Because that's a perfect show.

Yes it is.
However, as they stick very closely to the source material I wouldn't expect the next season to involve Moriarty at all. They ended the first season just as the first book ends, and M makes next to no appearances in book 2. We should get a hounds of bakersfield episode, and I would guess the story where the dude who was escaping the evil society in America and fakes his death. I can't wait... the hold up is because Watson and Holmes are both in the Hobit.

I'm holding out for the Butcher of Bakersfield episode.

It shows; he gets the tone of the books better than those old series and movies ever did.

god i love me some Noomi Rapace, but im not sure about the movie. I much prefer the tv show to a bunch of explosions.

Looks like a solid popcorn movie, much like the first one. RDJ will carry it, again. I'll enjoy watching it and forget about it shortly thereafter - much like the first one.

2011-10-25 05:26:11 PM
The Waverley is in it! Very cool.

Probably the only thing worth watching, though. Holmes as action hero isn't my idea of a good premise.

2011-10-25 05:47:42 PM
It looked like a videogame.

If you want to be challenged... don't go to the multiplex. Mall movies are to cinema what ChickTracks are to literature.

What autotune is to music...

/you get the picture.

Right, except Sydney Paget drew Holmes in a deerstalker. (new window)

Still, not really important what hat he wears.

Episode 3 was pretty good.

Heron: It shows; he gets the tone of the books better than those old series and movies ever did.

The BBC "update" of it, I found, actually captures the tone of the books best of all, in spite of being brought forward some 100 years.
