Ordered one the first day. Early Christmas present to myself.

They can spy on me if they want - they'll die of boredom.

Honest Bender: Amazon has a browser now?

Yes. It's the Amazon equivalent of Opera Mobile or Skyfire or any one of a million other cluster/remote-render browsers.

Basically, it renders your page on a remote server and then feeds you the compressed version.
Amazon's EC2 cluster is supposed to be really good at it though I have no clue how things such as web streams or flash video work on them.

No it's not, 10" tablets are not truely portable. You have to carry them like a book no matter what, females can't put them in a purse (unless they have Mary Poppin size bags), guys will hand carry no matter what size you have. Now you want be as much of an AW when you go to Starbucks like you are with your iPad but I don't need a device to say "Look at me". Everyone uses their phones which are 4" and are happy to use it so why is 7" too small?

But everyone is allowed their opinions.

Ordered one, can't wait to get it. But I'll be the first to admit I'm a total Amazon whore. We buy damn near everything from there so for me is perfect. My wife has an iPad, and frankly I think it's too big to be easily portable. I find the amazon tablet's size to be a strength, but I'm sure many will disagree. All a matter of preference.

As for Amazon spying on you via the browser...whatever. They already know pretty much all there is to know based off my spending habits with them as it is. I bought my first book from there in like 1996. And now my wife and I but everything from books to electronics to OTC medicine.

I think it's not avaliable in the UK. But regional variations aside I think it's the first honest to god compeitor to the iPad. Amazon offer (or can possibly offer) largley the same services through their tablet as Apple can their offering and realistically it's those services and not usb ports/hdmi/sd card slot avaliability that the general public care about.

It's at a really sweet price point and yeah, unless they balls up how much stuff costs to buy for it I think it'd be the one to get if you're adverse to the Apple one.

/Hate if you want folks but if hdmi/etc mattered one damn it wouldn't be 41m iPads to 11m Android slates according to Gartner by year end 2011.

what about the battery life? 8 hours without wifi seems piddly compared to the 2 months on the kindle touch.

2011-10-25 01:21:55 PM
I'm getting one for X-mas, but I'm hoping for a Netflix app. If they truly want to compete with Apple they better get Netflix availability. Currently it only supports Amazon Prime instant video which makes sense since they're trying to grow their customer base, still I can pirate movies and add them manually to the hard drive so it ain't all that bad. I would hate to buy Amazon Prime just so I can watch it on the Fire. All my tvs are hooked up through Netflix so it would be a pain to switch over. I like the idea of having a smaller tablet, but I'm not sure how it compares since I've never played with an ipad. The idea of being able to fark on the toilet without the risk of burning the tops of my thighs off with the laptop is well worth $200.

The screen and processor are the battery killer on the Fire.

I've been a prime guy since the beginning but I don't buy anything from amazon... except almost everything. I'll probably get one of these things AND a kindle touch.

The kindle touch is still an e-ink display. It uses zero power when displaying something, only when updating the screen. The Fire uses a colour LCD panel, it requires power to display stuff and run the LED backlight.

Screens eat a lot of power. The processor is also much more powerful in the Fire so it too will consume more power than the Kindle Touch.

Pretty sure it uses power for the touch detection, albeit very, very little.

I don't see them doing it. First, they plan on making the money back from selling the Fire at below cost by selling media from Amazon. Also, they are working hard at inking all sorts of deals with studios, record labels, etc to get up to Netflix's level of content. They just signed Fox and someone else this month.

While most view this as an iPad competitor, personally I think the intent is to kill the B&N Nook, and eat right into Netflix's market share.

Do you have amazon fresh in your area? I mean I hate to tout a corporation as some lifestyle choice - so I don't - I'll cut them loose in a heartbeat... but most of the groceries come from amazon too. You wouldn't think it but they have great produce. I try to find something wrong with it... but I can't. It's cheap. It's fast. And it's good.

Someone needs to introduce you to the wonder of Amazon offering downloadable PC games for the same price as Steam (or Gamersgate for that matter), and to the fact Steam doesn't work on a 360, or the Wii for my kid. Or to the fact I can't sell a digital download, but I can sell used games, even back to Amazon with free shipping. Or to the fact Steam charges tax, and Amazon does not. Etc., etc., etc....

I go where the games are cheapest, I don't give a fark who it is. But for the 360 or Wii, it's almost always Amazon. For the PC, it's whoever has it when I want it for the least amount of cash.
