FTFA: "Black Marines were barred from being stationed with whites at nearby Camp Lejeune. But what hurt worse, he says, was returning from the battlefield to a homeland that ordered him to sit at the back of the bus and drink out of separate fountains from the white Americans he had just put his life on the line to protect."

Kinda like those unpatriotic, selfish Tea Party fakrs at that recent republican debate who booed the gay serviceman serving in Iraq or Afghanistan (I can't remember which).

Montford Point Marines participated in the seizure of Okinawa and came under heavy fire at Iwo Jima, winning praise from some white officers for their actions. They were sent to Japan to clean up the ash after the atomic bomb was dropped over Nagasaki.

Wow.

"..and drink out of separate fountains from the white Americans he had just put his life on the line to protect."

OK, we need a little historical clarification and perspective here. Granted blacks in the Marine Corps and other services were treated like crap in the beginning and they wanted to serve in every capacity, even as infantry troops. But in very rare instances were they actually put in any danger. WWII policy was that blacks did not serve in combat units. They were the truck drivers, the cooks, the laundrymen, etc.

So although I still appreciate their service, this article makes it sound like they were front-line troops going toe-to-toe with the Germans and Japanese. And that simply wasn't the case. Look at all the photos and film of front like WWII action and you'll see what I mean - not a black person anywhere near.

And yet, the blacks got desegregated and, has that made things better for them (and for the rest)? Is society as a whole better off? Are THEY better off? Really, ask yourself.

well, technically - the majority of all races tend to self-segregate anyway. that whole birds-of-a-feather thing... the idea of integration - and in this country FORCED integration is generally a "new" idea (within the last century or so).

You are mostly right. TFA even confirms it...

He was sent to the Pacific where his all black ammunition company dodged gunfire as they ferried supplies to the front lines and carried back the dead and wounded. He oversaw the care of white Marines in the brig.

Montford Point Marines participated in the seizure of Okinawa and came under heavy fire at Iwo Jima, winning praise from some white officers for their actions. They were sent to Japan to clean up the ash after the atomic bomb was dropped over Nagasaki.

So no front-line fighting. Just a bunch of REMFs bringing ammo/supplies to the front lines, getting the dead/wounded away from the front lines, participated in the seizure of Okinawa while coming under heavy fire (woops) and cleaned up ash in one of the only two cities to ever be hit by an atomic weapon.

Things were getting better when I left. We got a nice new butterbar who was born again during his training and he made it his mission to stamp out "teh ghey". When a number of us NCOs explained to him that butterbars are much more replaceable than good snipers who also happen to be homosexual, the other officers came down on our side. Our explaining involved politely suggesting that bringing the heat down on the gay guys in our unit would result in being shoved into a VLS cell and launched by the squids. To quote one Noncom "I'm gonna have them shoot your bigoted ass back to Alabama were you can go back to watching your father fark your sister".

/butterbars need to realize that in terms of value to the unit they rank below the stray dog the enlist guys adopted, below the guy who runs the taco truck that parks by the beach, and below the scorpions we're using in our illegal scorpion fighting ring

As someone who recently graduated from wearing the butter bars, I take offense to that stateme.... yeah boot Lts... sorry, I don't miss that rank and the lack of respect (sometimes deserved, but usually not).

Also, to anyone who ever had to be stationed at Camp Johnson, my condolences. That place is still a shiathole.

Also the 92nd and 93rd Infantry Divisions, and the 24th Infantry Regiment. The Tuskegee airmen (who also included bombadiers). The USS Mason and the USS PC-1264 saw frontline duty as well.

Most of the black troops were used in logistics and supply, sadly. And many of the troops that could have seen combat didn't (the 555th PIR and the black units of the 2nd Cavalry Division) But a driver on the Red Ball Express was as vital to the war as the tankers and infantrymen he supplied.
