I have never been upset more over a sporting event (or much else for that matter) than I was that night in March of 1992.

I was there. Good game. Wish we would have won. Probably didn't help that half the roster either didn't play for whatever reason or got minor injuries during the game and sat for the rest of it. It was for a good cause though and it was fun.

Props to Lattener for coming back and doing it. He embraced the villain role and played the crowd like a good heel in pro wrestling.

ahh yes, I still have that little team picture autographed since my aunt worked at Duke back then

"He laid it on thick by going on all fours to theatrically wipe a wet spot with a towel, and then he got ejected with two ceremonial technical fouls."

That's pretty cool. Laettner was one of the best college players of all time. I saw Duke a year before the Kentucky game at the '91 regional final (from the sixth row of the bleachers) and it became very clear to me why people were comparing him then to Kevin McHale. He really had a half dozen moves.

You'll get over it UK fans. Bill Walton did worse to Memphis in the actual finals and I never hear people around here that are still upset about that. Maybe bitter but not upset.

The fact that he was selected to the original Dream Team, along with Magic, Jordan, Bird et al. is, I think, one of the strongest testimonials to the guy's abilities. IIRC, he was the only one on that squad who hadn't been selected to multiple NBA all-star teams.

You have no idea how long those people can hold a grudge. It's like religion to them. No other fan base is as obsessed with basketball as these people. Granted, I'm a Louisville fan, but I've been all over and these people are the only ones who just never let anything go.

No, I won't. I prefer to petrify into a bitter, constipated old man because of it.

Another Memphis loss that was worse: the 2008 in the National Championship was way more of a heart breaker than that game and I don't get all pissy when that gets brought up. It sucked but it's over.

Of course a Louisville fan wouldn't understand about not letting go. Louisville fans are used to letting go after, say, fifteen seconds.

That's a good point. As a pro, I think he made a couple of All-Star teams but never quite reached the level of stardom everyone predicted. Double figure scorer though and a good passer as I recall.

I don't know if you'd agree but I really wish they had made the Dream Team a one time thing. Just let everybody know who really has the best players and then go back to letting the college kids do it.

I don't think we would win any more gold medals, or probably any medals. Not enough of the top talent stays long enough in college anymore. Maybe if we were lucky enough to time it with a freshmen class like John Wall's. But if we had to field a team with last years NCAA Men's rosters, good god that would have been terrible.

/my starting five? marshall/teague (take your pick), austin rivers, barnes, henson, sullinger
//and yes my bench would come from 3 of those 4 schools

That's true. At the very least, it would happen rarely. But that gives people a chance to see David vs. Goliath. Or a bunch of college kids beating the Soviets.

He was very good but, unsurprisingly, had personality conflicts with others in Minnesota; he considered himself the star of the new franchise when this Garnett guy came on board and looked like a usurper. Then he went to Atlanta, shredded his Achilles and was never really the same. (Players do come back from Achilles injuries a lot more readily than, say, ACL injuries, but I guess Laettner didn't; his was pretty severe.)

As for the Dream Team thing, they intentionally selected one amateur player to join the team, and Laettner was really a no-brainer of a choice. The only other player who would have made any sense was Shaq. But in 1992, Laettner was the best college player, period.

Plus, the Dream Team had Ewing and The Admiral as Centers. There was obvious durability concerns over Barkley and the only other PF they had was Malone. It's even more of a no-brainer to take the PF (Laettner) over the Center (Shaq) in this situation.

Super Chronic

I forgot about the injury. After that earlier post I was trying to remember how he ended up in Detroit and retired fairly early. And I was not near the Google.

You're right, he really was the best college player that year. That Duke team was so loaded too. Laettner's covered? Grant Hill dunks. Hill can't get open? Hurley hits a three-pointer.

Suddenly feeling not so young. Not old, but not 20 either.

he put on 20 pounds between fresh and soph year, I hope he put on at least another 10. He has the body of kevin durant, but instead of an offensive machine, he was bred for defense. I'd trade 2 plumlees for him

Oh, no doubt. Maybe all 3, although I haven't really seen the youngest one in action yet.. If he bulks up a little bit more he's going to be a terror.
