That system is already basically a sewer someone built light rail in. This is a stupid idea.

Who could've foreseen this?! I mean, if you take away the garbage cans, then people will stop doing things that produce litter, right?

This plan is as stupid as abstinence-only sex ed. Just because you take away something that people use doesn't mean that they'll stop doing it. They'll still do it; just more messily.

I'm sure they received a bonus for all the money they saved.

Here in Quebec, we don't have a concept of littering. It's natural to throw your trash on the ground and then someone comes along and picks it up. I don't see why Americans are too dumb to grasp that simple concept. Do you really need trash barrels every ten feet to throw away your fast food wrappers?

This is like train and underground stations in Britain. No bins, because the IRA might put a bomb in it. Because of that you have nowhere to put your trash except the floor or under a seat, or on the seat or in the flower pots. No wonder they're all such filthy shiatholes.

Some parks used to do that - they had no trash bins and just posted signs that asked visitors to take their trash home with them. Obviously most people forgot to bring bags, etc. so they just littered.

The DC Metro has trash cans and a fairly strict "no eating" policy that other riders help enforce*. Seems to work as the DC Metro is fairly clean for its size.

*Tourists ignore it, but you'll see regular riders either giving dirty looks or telling people politely to stop eating/drinking while on the train.

Have you not seen the ongoing obesity epedimic? I can't even walk ten feet with out scarfing down a McDonalds hamburger or at the very least a delicious candy bar. That is why we need lots of trash barrels every ten feet.

I eat garbage, so i'm getting a kick out of these replies...

Ok if there is no place to toss litter, what the hell do they expect folks to do? Id guess that 15% of folks have enough brainz to actually pack it out with them or not do it in the first place, the other 107% wont care and just be pigs.

Really? I've always thought of the Underground as being relatively clean and tidy compared to the subways of most other major cities. Sure it's not someplace you would go out of your way to hang out at, but compared to New York or Paris, it's like a farking palace.

I'd also like to say that you shouldn't be having sex in the subways either. It tends to disturb the rats feeding on your garbage.

Subway cars are fine. It's the stations that you gotta stay the hell out of. This is what happens when your city has a severe lack of public bathrooms.

//Paris metro stations all smell like stale urine AND cigarettes

we as a society really need to learn how to travel from point a to b without creating so much trash in the first place.

i take the train/bus at least 7 times a week and i rarely need to stop to throw trash away.

As strange as it may sound, trash cans attract trash. Humans can be trained and if there are no trash cans around they will hold the trash. Except the a**holes who will just dump their trash anywhere but they would not have used the trash cans anyway.

As part of the late 60's and especially into the 1970's conservation movement was a large "Don't be a Litterbug" campaign, conservation groups argued that if there were more public trash cans there would be less trash on the streets and therefore clean costs would be less. In all a good idea as littering was very common. The success of this program has made people forget how much trash is generated on a daily basis in public areas.

Whoever came up with this idea obviously was not around in the late 70s early 80s when the campaign finally gained some traction and was definitely not a Boy Scout who volunteered for roadside clean up. We used to collect 10-12 pickup loads of garbage off the side of the road. Now they get 1-2 on that same stretch.

There is the problem the cigarette smoke used to cover up the urine smell but with fewer smokers and non smoking laws we now get to enjoy the smell of stale urine.

So far, the eaters I've seen will ignore those requests. Hell, they'll chow down in front of a Metro employee and the employee will take no action. Same for playing music without earphones.

If Metro enforced its rules better, maybe it would collect some fines and not need to impose rate increases.

A well littered subway turns into a Christmasy snow globe when a train comes through, especially an express. What a holiday delight. That, and the smell of urine and uranus.

In Paris, the trashcans were welded shut. Litter goes near the can.

It's often the opposite. People don't generally want to be assholes but they will if there's no other attractive option.

Some people will always have dropped trash but now you'll have more who do so because there isn't a bin anymore and they sure as hell aren't holding on to an empty bag of chips for an hour.

When you've finished your meal wait until the subway doors open, and toss your trash right onto the platform! Problems solved! Why, yes, this is what they do in Philly. Oh and can these motherfarkers spit, spit every where, men, women children, opening up car doors to..spit, in the middle of a conversation on the street, it's to the point where I just try not to look at anyone any more-cause you never know who's going to let loose......sigh.

lol... thats funny, I just recently had to install a trash can in every single room in my house so that lazy farks would actually throw their trash in a trash can.

Works well though, no excuse when there is always one within arms reach.

Years ago (I think after 9/11) the MBTA evicted trash cans from Boston subway stations until the agency could find a sufficiently expensive and politically connected source for bombproof trash cans.

DC Metro prohibits eating on the trains and has bomb-proof garbage cans on the platform. We're ready for the hungry, armored rat invasion.

Technically, it is illegal to eat or drink on the NYC Subway system.

No one will listen though. I personally wouldn't want to try to tell someone to stop eating their food on the subway...

The subway systems in NYC are the most disgusting filthy places you can imagine. The bums use the elevators, stairs and anywhere else they can as personal restrooms. The rats leave a nasty smell everywhere else. They are taking advice from the PATH systems that have the same no trash policy. Last week a conductor was let go for getting violent with a customer who was eating cheeseburger on the PATH.
So you offer some trash cans. If they want to cover costs, offer the giaganto evil corporations space to advertise and have them "sponsor" trash cans and volunteer cleanup.

2011-10-25 10:02:55 AM
The rats can provide a sustainable local protein source for the cities homeless/hipsters.

And the plagues will help cull the excess population.

This guy may be a genius visionary.

I remember highways, particularly American highways, being lined with cups and styrofoam containers when I was little back in the 1980s. It was pretty gross. Between the campaigns to end styrofoam use at fast food restaurants and littering in general, public streets and highways are much more presentable now. Anyone born after 1990 has little to no idea just how bad the situation was.

I'm irritated by the lazy, thoughtless arsewads who leave their garbage on public transit. Coffee cups, bottles, food wrappers, and on rare occasions containers of half-eaten food are left on seats, atop ledges, or simply dumped on the floor for people to step on, when trash and recycling receptacles can be found near stop along major roads and many side streets in this city. There is no excuse to leave garbage around; it won't kill a person to hold their wrappers and cups for a couple of minutes until ze passes a bin.

The trash cans were welded shut or removed because terrorists placed bombs in the bins and when the devices exploded it showered the area with metal fragments causing additional injuries.
