What, words in advertising don't really mean anything?

Well, people should know by now that just because advertising claims something, it doesn't necessarily make it true.

Honestly, to me the "Artisan" label on the Domino's never struck me as meaning "made by an artist" but rather "Hey, this is a different style of pizza".

FTA: "The box itself pokes fun at the artisan label. "We're not artisan," it says in big red letters on every box. "We don't wear black berets, cook with wood-fired ovens or apprentice with the masters in Italy."

Domino's is calling its new pizza artisan "with a wink and a smile," says Weiner. "We're not taking ourselves too seriously."

We are liars who sell you shiatty pizza for too mch money and support radical fundamentalists.

Vegemite: What makes something artisan?

An artist made it?

Artisan: ar·ti·san/ˈɑrtəzən/ Show Spelled[ahr-tuh-zuhn] Show IPA
noun
1. a person skilled in an applied art; a craftsperson.
2. a person or company that makes a high-quality, distinctive product in small quantities, usually by hand and using traditional methods: food artisans.

What pisses me off is the word "artisinal". Is that even a real word? I don't think so - I think it's more marketing-speak.

2011-10-25 10:45:20 AM
A few years back, McDonald's started using the word "premium" to charge more... Their Premium Salads -- I believe that started after the demise of their infamous Salad Shakers... and let's not forget their overpriced Premium Selects fried chicken strips and their Premium Chicken Sandwich line. It's as if "premium" is code for: "Pay us some more money and we'll give you the good stuff -- not the crap we're serving to the riffraff."

Yeah.. I gave into it once at dominos... the pizza has less toppings on it than a regular large with the same type of toppings. They both taste the same. And the artisan is basically a half pizza at the same price as the large.

Yeah, the artisan thing is obviously a marketing ploy, though I did try one of Domino's new pizzas since it was the only thing that sounded appealing at the time we were ordering.

It was actually pretty decent, though the whole "manager signs the box" thing is lame...it was an obvious scribble on the box, anyone could have put it there....

/not that it matters, just saying....if you're going to put that part of it in your commercials....

No. This may be hard to believe for any one who had Dominos old pizza, but the new pizza is worse.

If this is going to be another pizza snob thread, any town in NJ or neighborhood in NYC has a dozen mom and pop pizza places better than every national chain.

An artisan (from Italian: artigiano) is a skilled manual worker who makes items that may be functional or strictly decorative, including furniture, clothing, jewellery, household items, and tools. As an adjective (spelled "artisanal"), it has been used as a marketing buzz word to describe or imply an association with the crafting of hand made food products, such as bread, tofu, beverages and cheese.

This.

Or buying it direct from the maker at a farmer's market or whatever. Whole Foods "artisan" doesn't always count either.

Loaf's Tray: It's really no wonder that we have so many "artists" in menial trades these days, with everyone and his mother diagnosing themselves as artistic...

In Bali, they don't have a word for 'artist' because everyone was just expected to produce art, music, whatever as part of their daily life.

Wow, they must be doing things differently in your neck of the woods. Little Caesars around here is known for cheap, cardboard like texture and watered down tomato sause. If you catch them on a good day, the Crazy Bread is pretty damn good, but most of the time you can tell it's been sitting under a lamp since that morning. It still thrives on college students though, because you can get a large pepperoni for 5 bucks.

I don't even know how this is possible; I mean, as a kid, I thought the pizza was terrible. And, though I look good food, I'm not unaware that I'm lucky to live in a country where I can feed my family for $6 and afford to do so. That said, I haven't eaten a pizza from that place since I was in grad school, and I would choose almost anywhere else given the way it used to taste. The idea that it's even worse is kind of mind-blowing.

2011-10-25 10:58:55 AM
But the crust is hand stretched. Hand stretched!

The more some greasy kid with poor hygiene handles my food, the better it tastes.

Ingredients that indicate something is not really artisan...
Add on your ideas to the list.

Sorbitol
Ammonium Sulfate
High Fructose Corn Syrup
Low-Fat cheese

The reason you haven't tasted it is because it doesn't exist. What you call artisan was invented by guys like me, to sell pizzas. You're born alone and you die alone and this world just drops a bunch of rules on top of you to make you forget those facts. But I never forget. I'm living like there's no tomorrow, because there isn't one.
