(USA Today) Sad America's last B53 -- a nuclear bomb the size of a mini-van with 600 times the power of the bomb used at Hiroshima -- is being disassembled today. So long, 10,000-pound-deathbringer. We hardly knew you   (usatoday.com) divider line 206

I kinda wish we shipped it to Mars to detonate. There's no practical explanation other than to see the effects of such a device in actual motion on a world where it would cause no harm to anything living.

pretty interesting how they had to develope technology just to dismantle it.
you would think the original people of retired or died would have left plans or something.
but overall no big loss.

Don't worry, we have way more accurate and deadly ones coming on line to replace it. Think smaller, more accurate and more numerous with variable yield customizable to the mission.

Meh, it was dated anyway. Bombs that have to be dropped by plane are so last century. Missiles fired from afar are the new hotness.

They may not have been too concerned with the future dismantling. I suspect they had a different fate in mind for it.

Hardtack Oak was the prototype for this class, same yield (8-9MT). We and the Soviets both shot off at least a dozen bombs more powerful than this back in the 50s. It's just that they're militarily not particularly useful. Inverse square law and all means that doubling your yield doesn't double your kill, and you're probably getting random bits of unimportant nowhere besides.

I just learned that KC used to be "protected" from Soviet bombers by a series of Nike missile installations so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies

/the theory was to shoot down Soviet bombers with small(but dirty) nuclear-tipped missiles to keep them from dropping their bombs on the city
//if anybody's going to irradiate our cities it's going to be us damn it!
///cool story bro?

fit the JDAM guidance package on these B61 mod 11's and you have a 340 kiloton ground-penetrating weapon with 10-meter accuracy deliverable by an F-16

Ever since the 1980's the focus of the military has been smaller, more precise bombs. Taking a city off the map is not as desirable as a weapon which can take out the military establishments and leave the civilian population alone.

We Americans seem to have a very interesting and historically unique theory on fighting war. While traditionally, the population of a country was made to suffer until they submitted to the new conqueror, we aim to leave the civilians population alone and in fact we come in and build, improve or repair public utilities, schools and hospitals for them while the war is going on. I am not aware of any other civilization which has used this theory of warfare. I am not saying our theory is wrong, just that it is not the norm in human history.

2011-10-25 10:46:07 AM
On the PBS website they used to have a program where you plugged in a city and nuke yield and it showed you a map with concentric rings as to vaporization, firestorm, psi atmosphere overpressure and fallout range.

It mysteriously vanished after 9/11.....

I'm more afraid of the W72 or equivalent. 11 inches in diameter, sixteen inches long and weighs about 50 pounds. Equal to six hundred tons of TNT. We made about four hundred of them.
