Good - glad to know he had some comprehension of what was going down versus just a quickie to the dome.

I wonder if he pleaded?

Qaddafi's body has been on public display in a commercial freezer in a shopping center in the port city of Misrata, which suffered from a bloody siege by regime forces during the spring.

That's completely inappropriate.

Surely they could've found a shoe store nearby.

Cue the "I'm okay with this" pic.

I did a report on a king once and different sources listed different causes of death. One source said he was poisoned, another said stabbed and lastly he died of natural causes. My teacher said well if you were poisoned and stabbed you just naturally die too. Put it down as the cause.

Probably pleaded for them to shoot him since it looks like they broke every bone in his body. Normally I'd be somewhat bothered by this but, for him, who cares; it's good riddance.

It's good to be king.

I'm having difficulty feeling sympathy for the guy, to be honest.

s1ugg0: //Because pouring boiling tar on a person couldn't possibly cripple or kill them.

Wrong kind of tar. The old practice of tarring and feathering used pine tar, which is liquid at room temperature or only slightly higher.

Subby should cite the source of the "natural causes" comment- Fox News' "The Five", last evening. Also, something about being stored in a commercial freezer "like a giant cold-cut".
Not that I give a rat's ass about Gaddafi, but still.

Okay. Which of you posted this comment to the article cited by shivashakti?

I am sickened about what happened to Gaddafi. He was a better leader than our own! New water canals, oil sharing, going back to the Gold standard, free school, free health care, bonuses upon marriage and plenty of good non GMO food to eat. Now, people are eating their cats and dogs to survive! Nothing to eat, pipelines destroyed, hospitals destroyed, houses of civilians blown up, pure poverty and dismay. This is because Gaddafi was killing his people? Of course not! It was a CIA orchestrated killing by bringing in hired thugs to kill the Libyan people and blame it on Gaddafi. Obama, the EU and NATO are liars, murderers and traitors.

He should have been arrested, brought to trial, and judged by the international community. Instead he was shot in the street like a commoner. We're not talking about Oustazan who runs the falafel stand. He was the rule of Libya for DECADES, during which the majority of the time he ruled fairly and kept the peace. He deserved better. I hope the terrorist factions that assassinated him meet with even more egregious deaths.

GADDAFI LIVES IN OUR HEARTS.

I suppose our execution of Osama was OK since we did it with professional soldiers rather than a group of rebel citizens tired of being abused by a dictator. The hypocrisy of modern society.

Quaddafi's death was appropriate in relation to his life.

2011-10-25 08:58:07 AM
He probably ordered far worse to be done in his name.

That being said, it's unfortunate. Libya would be better off with a live, prosecutable Qaddhafi. It's always better to start off a new "rule of law, rule of the people" phase in your history with an actual trial of your former oppressor, instead of brutally beating and then executing him.

Doesn't play as well to the guys in the UN, the ICC, etc, all of whom are going to be needed by the New Libya to get things running smoothly.

A lot of people got off easy when Gaddafi was killed in cold blood. I can understand the revenge motive, but it would have been better to have put him on trial, no matter how much of a farce it may have been.

That said, tyrants have been disposed of in gruesome ways throughout history. Just that nowadays with the advent of cell phone cameras and the internet we can all bear witness to the ugly march of progress.

2011-10-25 08:58:42 AM
No tyrant should ever be allowed to die of natural causes.

I'm glad he died in fear and pain, like thousands of his victims.

That said, it would have been good to see him at the Hague, and find out just what he had been offered/promised by the West, especially Europe. The UK, France and Italy all had some shady deals going on with the guy, and I wanted him to spill the beans.

Of course, it was never going to happen, likewise with Saddam.

Agreed. I am hoping this is an ugly episode at the end of an ugly era for Libya.

Well, three guesses as to who benefits from him not being able to tell...

Arcturus72; Whoever killed him did him (and us) a huge favor and saved us all a lot of money...

Not really. I'd imagine it would have been useful to be able to ask him about where he put the milions of dollars he's stolen from Libya, detailed records of 40 years of whom he ordered killed and who carried out the orders, who his most trusted advisors were, what intelligence files he has, and as many details of his rule that you can wring out of him.

Because now a lot of that is unknown, so it'll just fuel people's mistrust of each other. They need to cobble together a brand new government and they need to ensure that all the nasty elements of Qaddhafi's reign are gone. Prosecuted, not executed.

Sticking a knife up a dudes butt is pretty harsh but I have to guess it does not compare to the things he had his govt do to some of its citizens. A quick search of human rights violations in Libya returns so nasty shiat.

2011-10-25 09:09:41 AM
Khaddafi's manner of death wasn't new, unusual, or surprising. That we're treating it like it was just shows our own ignorance of history, of the end a thousand dictators have come to over the last ten thousand years.

And he won't be the last.

Actually he had a US bank account with over 60 billion in it, so I could assume that a lot of the millions he stole went there. My opinion is that we should take out the cost of our military aid during the revolution prior to returning it to the new government, especially in light of them not wanting us in the country.

elffster; Well, three guesses as to who benefits from him not being able to tell...

If you remember, just recently, the West was hailing Qaddhafi as a "reformed dictator". After 9-11 he suddenly started being all friendly and "okay okay I won't build stuff to blow you up with". Tony Blair even went over and hob-knobbed with him for a while. There were definite signs of some kind of easing of tension between Libya and the West. All was forgiven.

And then the Arab Spring happened, and Libya got picked for "NATO intervention" because while Libya might not have a lot of oil, the oil is DOES have is very, very high quality and easy as hell to get out of the ground.
