"We feel that, since the military is required to be let in there, there should be some response" from anti-military recruiters, too, Grueschow said.

He was then eaten by a grue.

I sure hope they pay better than the armed forces.

And then there are days when, just for a little while, I'm proud to be an Oregonian.

For a moment I thought the sign said "BOOBS NOT BOMBS!" Now that's a movement I could get behind.

This is pretty retarded, where are they doing this? oh, never mind, this makes perfect sense.

In other news, military service means you really farking LOVE war.

2011-10-25 02:04:59 AM
yeah but do the peace recruiters let you blow stuff up? I think not

2011-10-25 02:10:08 AM
or work on three thousand pound bombs? nope

also hippies can suck it not every job in armed services require you to kill.

2011-10-25 02:10:17 AM
We don't care what you made on the ASVAB, we don't have a job for you, we can't give any student loans, just don't join the military. Join us and it will work out!

Twits, anyone going military after HS either wants or needs to.

/Went Air Force after 1st year in college, not my thing and got out after one tour but AF paid for a lot and gave me preference when it came to job offers. Did my due, got my perks, paid my $ back. What do you offer?

SoCalSurfer: yeah but do the peace recruiters let you blow stuff up? I think not

They probably dont even let you borrow a rifle that shiats in its own mouth and makes a twanging sound in your ear when you fire it like !@#$%^&* airsoft gun.

Thread jack not intended.

2011-10-25 02:12:38 AM
Thank you for your service.

I don't know about the 'peace officers' effectiveness in shaping a person's propensity to join the War machine I hope that they at least shower and present themselves responsibly..

I personally have nothing against the military. Long history of military service in this family. However, I do want the recruiters to quit lying just to meet their quota. I've heard them do it, I've heard of them doing it, and I will always attempt to correct it when I hear it. My opinion is that if they are truly interested in the military they will join it regardless of warts. Believe me, sometimes the idea of hard work and sacrifice can be a selling point; not a negative.

Hence the regular sidewalk protests by members of the War Resisters League, Veterans for Peace and other groups outside Portland high schools, said John Grueschow, coordinator of the Resisters League's military and draft counseling programs.

They're all just part of the Conciliatory-Industrial Complex, man. What if they gave a peace and no one came?

//"Hey, hey, WRL / How many Krauts did you talk to Hell?"

2011-10-25 02:25:22 AM
There's nothing wrong with military service, but it's not for everyone. I don't see the harm. But, I suppose if you consider every graduating high school student a potential soldier, you might have a different view.

2011-10-25 02:27:39 AM
Hey, if those guys had been willing to give me job training (full disclosure, I was infantry, so the only job training I got was "leadership skills"), a salary, and help pay my college tuition, and let me walk around with a rifle, I might have taken a look.

Quick tip... If you managed to get a remotely decent ASVAB score, you can do 4 years and get out with all your bennies and a decent job skill, having never fired a weapon at anyone besides the rage, and never being in more danger than the kid next to you at graduation who now owes $100,000 in student loans.

deadcrickets,

Have you ever actually talked to a for really real military recruiter or are you just going by stories you heard from your roommate whose brother was talking to some guy who had to be the gym in 26 minutes?

Recruiters don't lie, not even by omission. For some recruiters it's because they take pride in their job. For others, it's knowing that they might very well be in a foxhole with that recruit someday. And ya, for some recruiters the only thing keeping them in line is the knowledge that if they lie to a recruit, they will get caught.

Recruits in the modern military have to go through too many steps involving too many people with too much verification anymore. A recruit knows if the job they were promised will really be waiting for them because they get paperwork in their hot little hands confirming it. They know where they'll be going for training, and where their first station will be. They also used to know what bonuses they'd get, but there aren't a lot of those around anymore what with the entire freaking military being at or above recruiting goals atm.

Recruiters tell you to lie to the MEPS station. That's as recent as 2009. Lord help you if you follow their advice and select a job with the potential to earn a Top Secret clearance.

The US military doesn not use the criteria of warts to keep anyone from joining the service. Flat feet however is another story.

Yes, there are some dumbass recruiters who will tell you not to say anything about your Asthma, or a sealed juvenile record, they are FEW AND FAR between. Just like with every segement of the population, you have a few douchebags here and there. It's important not to think EVERYONE is, just because of a few assholes. Recruiters who are discovered to have lied face NJP and usually lose a paygrade, are pulled from recruiting duties and are not recomended for advancement.

But don't insinuate that every recruiter sits you down and goes over a list of lies for you to tell.

Nonsense, while there are plenty of honest recruiters out there, and I wasn't lied to personally before joining the army, I've heard enough stories from fellow stories about lies their recruiter told them. The least reliable information you can get from your recruiter is probably what your MOS actually entails, unless your recruiter actually is from your MOS.

Our local area literally had a recruiter discharged for lying to recruits. Another killed himself due to not hitting quota.

I can't remember hard numbers exactly. Several in Northern California, a couple in Hawaii, and an office full of them in Houston. They use every sales tactic to get you to sign up. I can't blame them, it IS their job after all. I've just always found it very off putting personally, especially when the chief of one office reinforced his subordinates suggestion that I lie to MEPS.

"My recruiting force is a professional force. They're not going to step out of line or lie to kids."

No I suppose not but do you tell them what it's like to be mortally wounded? Thousands of miles from home?
or to know what it's like to kill someone? To lose a leg? To be made blind by an IED?
No? I didn't think so.

Tell them what it's like to deal with PTSD every farking day. To have to struggle for treatment as a veteran. To drink your self to death to avoid the dreams.

Not everything is paid for in cash. I've had students paid for by the Guard. They don't really understand that it would have been less expensive to have paid cash for tuition than to have sold their mental health for a few lousy classes and a diploma.

patriotic propaganda has long been in use to influence young Americans. they deserve to know the other side of the story too. IMHO if a citizen is willing to serve in the Armed Forces they should have some damn fine benefits to come home to. have read too many stories of brave warriors that are homeless, hungry, jobless, you name it.

When I made the decision to talk with a recruiter at 19 I already knew I was going to join the military. I talked with two different recruiters, Navy and Marines. I had an ASVAB score of 97 so pretty much guaranteed my pick of jobs while serving.

I told both recruiters that I already knew I was going to join, but just seeking details from each branch. I spoke with an E-8 (Senior Chief) and asked him to tell me the straight-up truth about what I would be getting into, and to my surprise he really did! I knew exactly what to expect, including not having a very difficult time in boot camp because he prepared me for the mindfark that would happen, the physical aspect of Navy boot camp is a joke.

The Marine recruiter assured me I wouldn't ever go to the Middle East (this was in 2006, yeah right...) and kept boasting of the benefits while REALLY downplaying the whole shiatty aspects that makes the Marines the butt of so many jokes. He tried to talk me into being a sniper... Hell nah.

In the end, I suppose neither lied to me, but after I walked out of the Marines office I thought to myself, "Damn, if those guys weren't in the military they would have been destined to be used car salesmen."

I was only in for one enlistment, but in that time I visited 10 different countries, each more beautiful than the last, easily racked up a mid-5 digit savings account while having the most fun in my life thus far, and now currently am getting paid to attended college (tuition paid + housing paid)

Would've re-enlisted if they had kept the $75,000 bonus for my rate but that quickly got reduced to $35,000, then as I was getting out they reduced it to ZERO. Best two decisions of my life; to join, and then get out.
