In before Simpsons stopped being good X years ago.

But bringing my own. I never got into the show. Sure it's cute and clever, but rarely did it ever make me smile much less laugh. I do dig the culture references and the guest stars, but as someone said in a thread about Quentin Tarrantino's movies, when that's all there is, it gets stale.

I'm sorry you don't have a sense of humor. Life must be very bleak for you indeed.

Yeah I'm broken and don't have a sense of humor because I don't find Simpsons to be terribly humorous.

Now go on to tell me how I have no sense of taste because I'd rather not eat at McDonald's, the pinnacle of modern dining.

I'm sorry you're butthurt about not having a sense of humor or a working sarcasm detector. Funny thing, I know where you can find one.

Absurdly extensive?

I liked the first 17 frames of the first episode of season one, but it went south for me after that.
Also, I don't like playing ping pong, I don't like the Viet Cong. I don't like Burger King. I don't like anything.

Maybe it's just me, but aren't all analyses of cultural references made in "The Simpsons" absurdly extensive at this point?

The Simpsons? Is that garbage still on the air? Did it ever start being funny?

I mean....haters gonna hate - The Simpsons, while nowhere near as good as the so called "golden era", can still hit it out of the park.

I would bet money that Last Exit to Springfield sets some kind of record for jokes/second for shows broadcast on network television, when you consider all the visual jokes as well. It's almost relentless.

You do realize that thats only a really small amount. It will take a lot to catch up to what the Simpsons have done with cultural references. Family Guy is just doing what the Simpsons have done for years.

a) If you think that the Simpsons is only comprised of cultural references, then I don't know what to tell you, other than the fact that it's blatantly obvious you've never really paid attention to the show at all.

b) You can make references without making the reference the joke. Family Guy falls into the latter trap. The Simpsons, during its heydey, did not.

jayhawk88: I would bet money that Last Exit to Springfield sets some kind of record for jokes/second for shows broadcast on network television, when you consider all the visual jokes as well. It's almost relentless.

Yeah, easily one of the best episodes, along with Deep Space Homer.

The difference being that the Simpsons usually let it fly under the radar while Family Guy rubs it in your face to make sure you get it, forcefully if necessary..

Yes, the Simpsons have come a long way since an old drunk made humans out of his rabbiatcharacters to pay off his gambling debts. Who knows what adventures they'll have between now and the time the show becomes unprofitable?

Yeah that's probably it. He mentioned earlier that he wasn't even familiar with
PoTA. You'd think, though, that the Itchy & Scratchy episode he is talking

Then again not everyone is as much of a PoTA (& Heston in general)

One reason I dont think Family Guy is funny. The only times I ever really enjoyed Family Guy is the Family Guy Star Wars episodes. But then again, I agree with Chris saying that Robot Chicken's was better.

Sure, that's great for those with previous cultural experiences, but, for me, the Simpsons exist in a vacuum, and these often come off scary and confusing.

omeganuepsilon: I do dig the culture references and the guest stars, but as someone said in a thread about Quentin Tarrantino's movies, when that's all there is, it gets stale.

I don't care if you're trolling or that's your serious opinion. I'll bite because you're completely wrong.

What makes the Simpsons so great for me is that they've managed to create the most developed characters on television. And I'm not just talking about the Simpson family. There are tertiary characters on the Simpsons that have more depth than most shows give their main character.

And every once in a while there are episodes that must make the DVR smoke, cause I get all misty-eyed. The "Lisa's First Word" episode does that to me.

Krieghund: I'll bite because you're completely wrong.

A differing opinion is not wrong. It's a farking opinion. "I don't like spinach." "You're farkING WRONG!"

Krieghund: most developed characters on television.

Well, then there's that gem. That is funny. It explains a lot about you, demonstrates why you're capable of thinking someone's personal taste can be WRONG!. Retard.

omeganuepsilon: when that's all there is, it gets stale

I put in bold what you put in italics in your initial comment. This is clearly not an opinion. It can be demonstrated that there is more to the show that merely cultural references and guest stars.

A response to your line:

Krieghund: omeganuepsilon: I do dig the culture references and the guest stars, but as someone said in a thread about Quentin Tarrantino's movies, when that's all there is, it gets stale.

An assertion that the show has well developed characters is more than just an opinion, it can be argued on its merits or lack thereof.

omeganuepsilon: Krieghund: I'll bite because you're completely wrong.

A differing opinion is not wrong. It's a farking opinion. "I don't like spinach." "You're farkING WRONG!"

So, to sum up. You say the Simpsons has nothing other than cultural references and guest stars, someone counters that by citing character development and you think someone is attacking your opinion and get all butthurt, again.

And then you go on to call someone retarded for expressing, in your view, his opinion about the show. I guess calling someone dumb for their opinion is a lot better than calling someone wrong for their opinion, amiright?

Baryogenesis: Nerd rage rant. How DARE he still not conform to me!

You read poorly.

Krieghund: the most developed characters on television

That is not opinion, that is declaration of (false)fact.

The characters are all simple archetypes, where some ignorant people see "depth" there really is only writing that puts that character out of their element(Bart being good, Homer being Smart, Marge letting her hair down, Lisa playing at taking Bart's normal role, etc). They're no more developed than characters like Urkel, Sabrina, or any other shallow and mostly family friendly sitcom. I'm no big fan of any TV drama, but even the worst of them have characters with more depth than Homer, Bart, or the rest of the "cast". They're mostly all whitewashed stereotypes with very little depth.

Sure, there are years and years of history, but that does not equal depth or development, as they mostly have no impact on the cartoon's following episodes. The characters don't change much, and if they do, it often doesn't last. They, for the most part, specifically do not develop, they stagnate.

That's all well and good, but I wasn't arguing for character depth, the other fellow was. I was just pointing out more of your butthurt and, now, hypocrisy. Do go on about how we're all ignorant, retarded people whose tastes in television are akin to McDonalds' food while at the same time getting butthurt when anyone criticizes your assessment of the show.

Your lack of a sense of humor regarding some internet snark about your lack of a sense of humor is very meta, though.

Thanks, subby. Now that I have that site book-marked, I will burn a lot more time reading all the entries.

I like the detail about the gremlin (automobile) as referenced in the Treehouse IV episode. However, the author failed to give a shout-out to the Shatner Episode (the one where he sees the monster on the plane -- also a John Lithgow bit from TZ Movie) of Twilight Zone in his analysis. The joke was the double meaning of "gremlin." If you don't know the TZ episode, then you won't get the joke.

TheOriginalEd: Both of you shut up. Whether the simpsons is dreck or not its certainly not worth this level of discussion.

The show is worth the discussion. Now if that troll-like stalker I have would only partake instead of only being insulting and then trying to pass it off as "ok" because it's sarcasm and snark(when it's actually really lame passive aggressive trolling). I wish one could obtain an internet restraining order.

Baryogenesis: stop enjoying the show

Again, you read poorly. I never said that. Didn't even imply it. It is, however, slightly over-rated. IE: the review here as containing the most developed characters is not accurate, as I covered with my last post.

Baryogenesis: we're all ignorant, retarded people

Speak for yourself. I'm only denigrating you specifically, one who strives to prove to be such things with posts here. Personally, I think you're a sadist. Go ahead, look it up, I'll wait.

SNPP.com has existed for how long? And alt.nerd.obsessive alt.tv.simpsons for how long before that?

The only pop culture references on The Simpsons that haven't already been compulsively analyzed and catalogued are the ones that are so obscure that nobody outside the writer's room would catch them. And even those will be explained by Al Jean in a DVD commentary track eventually.
