Glurmo: They're the Grunka-Lunkas. They work at the factory.

Farnsworth: Tell them I hate them!

Look, if soda caused violence, Vlad the Impaler would have returned to the world of the living to tell me to tone it down a bit. It's a crap correlation.

or could it be that kids with violent tendencies don't have parent(s) that necessarily care too much about them, therefore not caring what they drink. Cheap, fizzy, sugar water....

They found a farking 9 percent difference between the two test groups. I'd say its much more likely that less intelligent and less affluent people are more likely to both drink soda and get in fights, more so than because the soda CAUSES them to get into fights.

These researchers should be fired. I bet they make bank too.

It might also depend how much cough syrup they are pouring into their grape sodas

Perfect. Blame anything but, you know, the kids themselves.

Wouldn't want any personal responsibility getting in the way now, would we?

High-school students in inner-city Boston who consumed more than five cans of non-diet, fizzy soft drinks every week were between nine and 15 per cent likelier to engage in an aggressive act compared with counterparts who drank less.

The hell? Most Americans drink more than five cans a week.

That would explain the roving trio of belligerent teen girls in the Bart
station last night. Bunch of assholes. Well, them and the other pair of assholes that
asked me to make the teens stop harassing them - who then bolted over the
turnstile and disappeared once the teen hate was turned on me.

I farkin' hate people.

Also,

Among those who drank one or no cans of soft drink a week, 23 percent carried a gun or a knife; 15 percent perpetrated violence towards a partner; and 35 percent had been violent towards peers.

At the other end of the scale, among those who drank 14 cans a week, 43 percent carried a gun or a knife; 27 percent had been violent towards a partner; and more than 58 percent had been violent towards peers.

Good Lord, minorities.

How many people are going to read this and think, "I'd better not let my kids drink too much soda because it will make them violent?" I'll bet kids who eat fast food more than 5 meals a week have a similar pattern.

Yes, if your parents don't give a crap what you do or what you eat, you're probably going to have social problems. What a surprise.

5 cans a week isn't even a can a day. I know a huge number of people that drink that much. Assuming you also count drinks from restaurants. According to a petition I just pulled up the average was equivalent to 1.5 cans a day. Soooo, yea.

Seriously, you're shocked at less than a can per day? What world do you live on?

Well the Aussie newspapers are chock full of shiat too I see. That almost reads like a satire piece.

Perhaps their findings are indicative of the peak blood concentration of caffeine in the subjects as opposed to fizz? Another Monster please.

I come in to comment on this story and the first thing I see is a gigantic fail pic that includes the word loose. I can only assume the author meant LOSE. If you misspell a word in your fail pic then it is you that has failed, not the target of your pic.

"What we found was that there was a strong relationship between how many soft drinks that these inner-city kids consumed and how violent they were, not only in violence against peers but also violence in dating relationships, against siblings," said David Hemenway, a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Oh, I'd guess around three times what I make, and I'm a real criminologist rather than an epidemiologist with airs.

I'd really like to see the data of that study. There are several factors I'd want to control for that I didn't see mentioned.

The kids are getting high on the fructose corn syrup, is what it is.

Correlation is so often correlated with causation that we are forced to conclude correlation causes causation.

Don't judge me.

the most outrageous assumption one could make would be: violent people like soda.

this study didn't even show that.

2011-10-24 10:38:04 PM
Somewhere between 23 and 43 per cent of these people are armed, and somebody is worried that they drink too much pop? I detect some skewed priorities here.

been there, done that. trust me, i know how you feel.

At the same time, comparatively, it's still pretty damned cheap.

Compare one liter of Poland Springs @ $1.19 to my previously stated price for the soda and the willingness for shiatty parents to spend the money on the soda cuz it's probably the only thing the shiatty kids wanna drink.

I'd be more worried about obesity and rotten teeth in kids that drink too much soda.

Used to have a scummy neighbor that put Pepsi in her baby's bottle. Poor thing had silver caps by three.

Her kid would be about 16 now and and to tell the truth, I wouldn't be surprised if he was a delinquent now.
