While one person saying something dumb doesn't invalidate or represent the whole movement (which I fully support), that is pretty facepalm-ish. Almost to the point that I might question the person's true motivation, but I have no proof so we'll just leave it at that and chalk it up to stupidity.

+1 to subby for the misleading trolly headline though.

You gotta admit, anyone from either side that can't laugh at that is dead inside.

So these are the Occupy Occupy Wall Street people?

2011-10-24 11:13:05 PM
The people occupying Wall Street would do well to incorporate the homeless in their campaign. Even the crazies.

The 1% wants us to believe that we don't have enough manpower to give everybody a comfortable life. They want us to believe that we'll have to sacrifice the majority to give comfortable lives to the minority.

There's plenty to go around. The 1% is just stealing that from everybody.

Since when was OWS about the common people getting something for nothing? It's about Wall st corruption, money in politics and having the tax burden shifted onto the poor and middle class and away from those at the top. It's about corporations controlling everything. it's about them taking money from taxpayers to pay their gambling debts. And not using their money to create jobs but to actually balloon things like oil prices and food prices.

Fail to the submitter. Fail to those who fall for the spin the media and pols are putting on it.

The headline:

OWSers complaining about homeless freeloaders showing up just for free meals, saying they feel entitled but don't want to contribute anything

FTFA:

"We have compassion toward everyone. However, we have certain rules and guidelines," said Lauren Digioia, 26, a member of the sanitation committee.

"If you're going to come here and get our food, bedding and clothing, have books and medical supplies for no charge, they need to give back," Digioia said. "There's a lot of takers here and they feel entitled."

Would "corporate mass media and the news outlets viewed by the vast majority of the populace" be more accurate?

Yes, a blogger is "the media". As is some asshole posting on Random Internet Message Board. But they have near-zero penetration. Now compare with CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, Bloomberg, USA Today, WSJ, the NYT, WaPo, etc.

yes I agree that I can be a voice in the wilderness but you know exactly what I was talking about. I'm talking about the establishment news media like the NY Daily News. I'm talking about the networks and the newspapers.

A lot homeless people suffer from mental illness to some degree. Complaining that they showed up and got free food is like blaming a hungry dog for eating the sandwich you left unattended on the coffee table. This doesn't include homeless young people who are homeless because it's so wickedly punk rock to do so and/or believe crusty living giving you more authentic looking dreadlocks.

That is exactly the farking point though. By having no stated agenda and no list of grievances, each protestor is simply protesting whatever random thing crosses their head. The people who say they "agree" with OWS might as well be agreeing with a wall, because there's no agenda or ideology to disagree with. If you go into an OWS rally and decide you're there because you want falconry to be banned, then BAM-- you fancy yourself as having a whole park full of allies. It's pure strategic brilliance on behalf of whoever is funding OWS-- you can't lose support if you don't stand for anything. You can't accomplish anything either, but it IS diverting headlines from Obama's various failures, which may be the whole goal. The resemblance to his 2008 campaign-- platitudes without policy-- is uncanny.

No, the definition of a co-op is a group of people where the majority have nice naive fuzzy wuzzy ideas about being groovy & sharing and a few powermad people who think a co-op is a good place for them to exercise their deranged desire for to do lists, committees, and pushing their personal politics on everyone else. Then the powermad ones wage war against each other and the naive people get all sad and hurt.

Its brilliant in its own way. Its just a fact of human nature that people feel ownership for the things they create, whether its a corporation that people will pay top dollar to invest in or a movement that spawns a homeless camp in Zucotti Park. Everyone trys to pull up the ladder after they have climbed it.

I think the $500k budget scandal is a good indicator. I also think that it would be funny to give them $20, million dollars of Soros's money and watch them turn into snarky money grubbing mafioso's like every other liberal non profit that manages to tap into someone elses money.

dudemanbro: You know who started the modern homeless problem in this country by gutting social services? Reagan.

So we've had three years of Obama, in two of which he had unassailable majorities in both houses of Congress. Why didn't he put back what Reagan "gutted"? Especially since he managed to blow hundreds of billions on every other pet cause that's near and dear to Democrats.

The answer is that we've got legions of homeless because the ACLU and other rights organizations sued to overturn the involuntary commitment laws, dumping those people on the street, not Reagan "gutting" social services, which at the time were largely furnished by the states anyway, not the feds.

Not that any of that will change your mind, but I'm tired of the leftie mythologizing being endlessly repeated and coming to be accepted as fact when it's just plain bullshiat.

Sabyen91: So...they are like teabaggers?

I was actually never clear WTF they were on about either. It's apparently easy to give a group a snappy name and get people to rally around your banner for whatever random thing they're annoyed at. I suppose that's inevitable in a country of 300 million, high unemployment and social networking.
