Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:

Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.

Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.

Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.

DHMO is a major component of acid rain.

Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.

Contributes to soil erosion.

Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.

Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.

Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.

Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.

Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.

Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.

Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.

Thats right people. Drink that disinfected water. All that yummy chlorine and yummy toxic waste called fluoride.

/In other news. White man die off and Brown man live on and on and on and on.

Do we need more proof that we should all switch to drinking beer instead of water?

FunkOut: Do we need more proof that we should all switch to drinking beer instead of water?

Yeah, well. We actually used to do that, since drinking out of a river in Europe usually meant one was getting a very unhealthy dose of human shiat. Only those in extreme poverty drank the water out of the river: The vast population drank their liquids with alcohol in it, usually beer, but the rich drank wine instead.

Exactly. Weak beer for most meals. It was disinfected. Only the desperate would drink out of a river back then.

The EPA will have to pry my parasite and feces ridden pond water out of my cold dead hands. I say ban plumbing.

I had my water tested and it contains a large percentage of hydroxic acid, the main constituent of acid rain.

I've had to add hydrogen hydroxide to my water supply to neutralize the acid.

Its not like ANY level of these compounds should be considered toxic, regardless of cellular pathways they block.

TFA is B.S.

I love those "toxic chemicals will kill you" articles where they don't mention the AMOUNT of the chemical it would take to do any actual damage.

When you can basically detect individual molecules of something, it's easy to say "it's in your water" without mentioning that you'd need to drink a few billion gallons of H2O for the effects of the contaminant to show up...

Damnit subby, that's exactly what the article *does not say*. Disinfectant By-Products, not Disinfectants, are the cause. Meaning that someone near or in a disinfecting plant might suffer from something like this, but less so from the actual drinking of the water.

Why has this substance not been banned yet. What is wrong with our politicians?

monochloroacetic can be used to add alkyl groups onto things or some crap like that, so, yeah, DNA damage etc. etc. etc.

kanedasan: Meaning that someone near or in a disinfecting plant might suffer from something like this, but less so from the actual drinking of the water.

No. The disinfection by products takes place in the water after the chlorine is added. Once Cl is added to the water and sent out in the distribution system, it reacts with what is in the water. Typically this means that all bacteria is killed and other constituents oxidized. However, depending upon the type of chlorine used for disinfection and the consitituents (both organic and inorganic) in the water, you can get the formation of all sorts of chlorine-based byproducts. This process is also time variable.

In short, this is not just a problem at the treatment plant, but it is mostly a problem in the distribution system. On the bright side, most compentent engineers know how to manage the disinfection and other water treatment processes to limit the production of DBPs
