A little over a month ago, Preckwinkle came to my place of employment to hold a press conference touting the tax breaks it gives companies which in turn creates jobs. Cook County gave my company something like $4 million dollars in tax breaks. We didn't know the topic of the press conference, and as we heard it, we were all pretty much speechless. 2 weeks before the press conference, they laid off 36 people. The next week they laid off a dozen more.

To be fair, job titles such as "Sleep behind a desk engineer, Sleep on a truck engineer, and Sleep in the park engineer" really should be culled.

FTFY, subby. The Cook County employment rolls are bloated with incompetent and inept hires, whose only qualifications were political alliance to/kickbacks for county board members. It had been that way for decades, and would have continued being that way if not for the fatal double tap of a crappy economy and Kid Stroger being himself too blatantly corrupt for even his father's political machine.

A thousand jobs on the chopping block is a good start.

I figured I wouldn't be the first to say it. Cook County is seriously bloated with patronage hires. This is a good first step.

The only problem is how many of those slackers will be laid off? Most likely alot of workers with connections will ride out the cuts, while many of the cuts may fall on the good workers.

Do you honestly think she'll be firing the six figure making patronage hirings and bs employees or low level shmucks who have little impact on the budget?

Also on the front page of this morning's Trib:

"Chicago's financial exchanges would see a 50 percent decrease in their Illinois corporate income tax bills under legislation introduced Monday afternoon by Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago.

Illinois would tax a fraction of the income generated by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Board Options Exchange, all of which have threatened to move operations out of state after Illinois temporarily raised its income tax earlier this year."

The people of this city have a corporate gun pointed at our collective heads.

You assume there's a difference between the two. There isn't. The low-level jobs are also patronage jobs staffed by politically-connected incompetents.

Also part of this plan is to increase taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and automobile sales. Those familiar with Cook County's tax history already know that the people in suburban Cook County would rather see 2,000 people laid off than to have to pay more county taxes. Municipalities are already losing businesses to neighboring counties. Buying items in Lake County (where I work) saves me 2% on standard sales tax items.

/over 500 of the 1,000 jobs "cut" are vacant positions
