what I don't understand is what they mean by a "cavity" in space. Is it just a vast empt(ier) region of space?

interesting
the chinese had a name for this? guest star?
feels like they had used the name before and that this occurrence is just oldest recorded usage. wonder when we humans first started noticing these guest stars ...

Knight of the Woeful Countenance: what I don't understand is what they mean by a "cavity" in space.

Astronauts are kind of busy and don't always have time to brush and floss between meals.

Basically, yes. The interstellar medium there must've been very thin indeed, since there was nothing to slow the explosion down. Result: Big bubble for the time since the supernova.

Does she have a hollowed-out cavity?

No asteroid belt, planets, oort cloud (new window) , or other 'stuff' that can get in the way of expansion of this sort.

Think of the oort cloud as like a Kevlar vest. This supernova's vicinity has no kevlar.

Better?

*as in, it disperses forward momentum laterally, yeah? Cool.

She does now.

I'd like the people who make such awesome and colorful images for astonomy articles to start working on particle and nuclear physics articles.
