I'm an unrepentant grammar pedant, but this article only made me think of Emerson's pithy observation:

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds...

2011-10-24 07:21:46 PM
Shouldn't the "10" in the headline have been spelled out?

Also, misuse of capitialization makes me super stabby.

In fairness, in the UK it wouldn't be unusual to see :

To set the colour of your text use the following syntax

myText.color = "red";

From recent things Meow has posted I am under the impression that Meow Is female. The headline did a good job of showing most of the errors talked about in the article.

"Numbers spelled out in one location but in numerals elsewhere."

Depends on the style guide you are using. According to APA numbers under 10 are to be spelled out. However, in the case where you start a sentence with a number (not advisable, but it happens) then the number should be spelled out.

As an editor, I approve of this headline. I have to deal with every one of the aforementioned errors on a daily basis. Today, I had to point out to a client that .15¢ = 15/100ths of a cent, not 15 cents. Big difference when you're talking about the charge for additional lease miles, wouldn't you say?

2011-10-24 07:55:39 PM
Oh, and I would like the ability to put a period at the end of my headline sometimes. Could we fix that, Drew? Thanks.

you mispelt Cense. spelling is verry importent.

2011-10-24 08:19:31 PM
There are two types of writing: A) prescriptive, and 2) descriptive. The former should apply to business related writing and, in this instance, I agree with the list. Reading prescriptive writing is like driving an automobile -- there should be a clear objective which starts at "A" and ends sometime thereafter.

The list in mostly wrong for descriptive writing, which is what comment sections and generally "good" writing are (usually); only a LAZY EYED grammar nazi would apply these so-called "consistency error" standards to other-than-power-point' presentations.

On hyphenation: if the words form a single phrase that together act as a single adjective modifying a noun, I hyphenate them, and don't otherwise:

"A typical ruler is one foot long. A one-foot ruler has many handy uses."

On lists: if the last two items are related in a way that others in the list are not, then I omit the final comma, but include it otherwise:

"I would like to thank my teachers, counsellors, mom and dad."

vs.

"I would like to thank my parents, my teacher, and God."

Imagine how that last one could read without the final comma! :-)

There's a big difference between writing in APA style for a report or college essay, and writing in real-world language and style for a fiction novel or personal letter.

I find that most business/college formatting and "proper" English is downright clunky when trying to write something that is pleasing to the eye and casual in its cadence. A good example is the emdash- a literary tool I adore- which is supposed to be be used without a space following it. While the APA rules (and other formal style guides) are clear, the reality is that in any novel you pick up you're going to see that space following the emdash. Why? Because it simply looks better that way.

And of course, on the Internet all rules are out the window because HTML really screws with formatting, and 75% of the people online are speaking in broken, stilted, jargon-filled, abbreviated, slang-loaded English anyway. Frankly, when I'm on the Internet I'm just happy to see people writing whole sentences using whole, real words instead of asking for "MOAR" or "SAUCE?" like goddamn idiots.

Really, out here in the wild, wild west of the Internet, I'm just pleased to be able to understand what the f♥ck people are trying to say in their busted-up English.

/And by the way, apparently FARK doesn't honor the actual emdash and replaces it with a mere dash. Heathens!
