You mean when I go to the store, they try and separate foods into smaller, more manageable containers? Those bastards!

FTFY. You're eating the same crap as everyone else, just paying more for the satisfaction of saying you got it from Whole Foods, because they're all naturey and stuff.

"The story is probably very different," Lindstrom says.

In other words he has no PROOF of his statement. I don't doubt that it's accurate, but any arsehole can make base-less statements that sound likely. That's not what journalism is supposed to be about though.

Yes. Because the guys opening the plastic bins at walmart left the bin in the sun for 3 days.

Grocery stores learned a long time ago that Americans really do not care about fresh produce, so they don't go through hoops to make it "fantastic". If you want the best produce, find a large ethnic market in your town, the produce there is generally much fresher and lasts much longer, because the people that shop there tend to be pickier about their produce.

Heh.

Grand_Moff_Joseph: And yet the produce is still a million times better than Walmart or most other big box grocery chains.

Most definitely, but non-chain places are pretty easy to find in most big cities. (If they're further from you than the local chain store, the savings will most likely more than offset the travel/gas cost.)

Detroit: Eastern Market
Atlanta: Your Dekalb Farmer's Market
Chicago: Stanley's Fruit & Vegetables (This place rocks, normal front-porch sized pumpkins were about $1/each yesterday.)

When visiting family in North Dakota a couple of years back, my uncle took us on a tour of the potato-bagging factory where he worked. Locally grown potatoes all from the same fields were bagged into about seven different companies' bags. Different bags, same potatoes. You are paying for a label, not a better potato.

Not always. There's some grifters that have a peach stand just across the savannah river for tourists. They set up after st. patrick's day. Georgia peaches don't come until summer. So, buyer beware.

Also, Lindstrom says when you go out shopping, don't grab a shopping cart.

"We know today that if I'm doubling the size of your shopping cart, you actually are buying up to 40 percent more," he says.

But... if I need to buy that much stuff, how else am I going to carry it?

"Another thing you should do is to always pay with cash because you have a physical relationship with money."

No. I mean, I understand what he's getting at, but I hate carrying around cash, and I can still manage my money using a debit card.

I don't shop there nor care, but the initial part of the sentence tells me guy doesn't know and is just making assumptions to fit his belief. It wouldn't surprise me either way, but I wouldn't take this guys word for it as he obviously doesn't know.

I do. Hell one of the main produce farmers at the local market has his farm about 3 miles from my apartment. I've been there to buy during the week when he's not at the market and it's fantastic. So yes, if you ask and actually check, it's easy to find out if they're local or not.

Notice how the author said probably?

I'm a professional grower, and while I've never sold any product to Whole Foods, I can tell you that the grocery stores in our area did indeed buy from local growers. When I stepped into Wegmans (Buffalo, NY) and saw "Apples from so-and-so Farms", I knew it was true because I know the head growers. I know that they only grow X, Y and Z apples and because I know the growers personally, chit-chat eventually comes to who you're selling to.

So... although I don't know a "Patty", or her farm, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the fact that the produce coming from more honest stores is in fact coming right from the grower.

Now, pesticide spraying.... that's something you don't want to know about, lol. Most of you guys don't even know close to the truth on that one, and you're better off that way.

I have to say, I bought some chicken noodle soup from Whole Foods the other day that was pretty much the best I ever had, including the stuff I make myself. Much better ingredients than you could find in other store brand soups.

Because someone who would buy produce at the supermarket and sell it for a 200% markup at the famer's market would never lie about it.

FTFA: In writing his book, Lindstrom carried out his own experiment. He hired a family - called the Morgensons - from Laguna Beach, Calif., and filmed them as they had friends over from the neighborhood and talked about 10 specific brands they were using. Their mission was to frequently mention these brands without letting their guests know of their secret motive.

"We know today that if I'm doubling the size of your shopping cart, you actually are buying up to 40 percent more," he says. "Another thing you should do is to always pay with cash because you have a physical relationship with money."

Maybe it's because I'm single but this makes no sense to the way I shop. I walk into a grocery store with a list of things I need. Occasionally and unrelated to the size of cart or basket I'm using, I may grab an item or two I've forgotten, but the times when I check out with items that aren't on my list are very rare. I almost always use a credit card, too, and this also doesn't change my grocery habits.

"The results showed that babies born to those women who watched the show had a stronger preference for the program than those children whose mothers did not watch the show while pregnant."

That does not even make sense. LOGICALLY the women continues to watch the show AFTER the baby was born, and kids identify with things that are familiar to them. So why even bother mentioning that the women were pregnant when they watched the show?

This just reminds me how spoiled we are here in Southern California. Even the plain-jane grocery stores have pretty good produce, probably as good as or maybe even better than what you get at Whole Foods elsewhere.

That said, there are a few areas where Whole Foods excels, for instance a lot of their poultry is much better than you can get at a grocery store. It's expensive, no doubt, but it's good.

2011-10-24 02:38:58 PM
I usually buy my produce for the local in state chain of farmers market. Even if it is the same sh*t as the big box stores I figure it probably has traveled one less step then before getting there then the big box stores.

Taste is usually a good indicator and I the local chain/farmers market produce is better.

Just left Whole Foods, as a matter of fact, on my never-ending quest for Ben and Jerry"s Schweddy Balls ice cream (of course they didn't have it-can't find it anywhere). Had to carefully sidestep all the soccer moms getting out of the Range Rovers that came for their afternoon wine fix.

Have some friends in N. Cal. that work an organic farm and live an organic lifestyle. Not the fake stuff in Whole Foods, where the produce looks an awful lot like the produce at any chain grocery store.
