I am a child of the 70s/80s. When it was still safe to play outdoors till the sun went down. And I have about 20/1000 vision. Playing outdoors did shait for my eyesight.

I don't care how good it feels, put that thing down and let the blisters heal.

Remember that old flash video with the frog that slits his mate's throat while they're having sex, and later he's jerking off and stares into the sun and his eyeballs light on fire?

/can't for the life of me remember the title

But will it keep them from having to shave their palms?

Masturbation causes blindness only if you shoot your eye out.

Yeah, pretty much this. Although more time outdoors would have massive benefits for most children, improved eyesight is unlikely to be among them.

I'm having trouble seeing the point of this.

Why not? I don't think they're saying it's a cure-all. My skepticism about any statistical claims aside, it makes sense that having to constantly focus on images of varying distances would "exercise" one's eyes and improve upon what they would be otherwise. If your eyes are truly messed up it might not matter, but I wouldn't think it a stretch to say that someone who often played outside and has 20/40 might have been 20/80 if they hadn't. The age at which one does it is probably another factor. Hard to say how much of a factor either would be, but it's not a ridiculous notion.

I played outside as a child and adult, but wasn't very good at sports because of my nearsightedness. I was much happier making models or reading or taking electronics apart because it was much easier to see those things than a ball coming at me.

Yes, even with glasses. Even today when I'm going to be reading or working on electronics I take my glasses off.

So I guess my point was that maybe people who don't have nearsightedness like to spend more time outside where it's easier for them to see rather than doing quieter indoor things that require close vision

Or being outside causes farsightedness.

That's what you get for staring at the sun all day.

It's genetic.
People who have poor eyesight are no longer eaten by predators before they can reproduce.
Application for grant to continue "studies" is denied.

New study: Place nearsighted kids on an island with large predators.

Why the hell isn't it sellable on the open market?

fark YOU NASA. First you stop going to the moon at all, and now you wonder why your budget is entirely cut away.

PROTIP: The cooler you science seems, the more money you get. No one cares about improving the reactions for complex chemisty that less than .05% of people will even know about and fewer still will ever work with.

Far better would be to head up to the moon, dig up a ton of dust, and send it back for consumption by geophiles and witches.

"Improved eyesight" only in terms of visiospatial relations and handeye coordination -you know, like learning to track and catch a ball or ride a bike, etc.
