His Ham radio call letters on his bumper sticker.

Um, technically wouldn't any type of social community centered around a communications technology be considered a "social network"?

No. You need to use wires! How else can you claim to make a net that works?

The telegraph gets short shrift these days, but it really did revolutionize communications. Before, a message could only be sent as fast as it could be physically carried. It could days or weeks for news to cross the country, and months for it to reach the far-flung reaches of the globe. Once the telegraph came along, though, you could send a message and know that it would be at it's destination in minutes, or perhaps an hour at most.

That seems pretty slow today, but the difference between 2+ months for a fast clipper ship to send a letter from the UK to Australia, and an hour for a telegram to traverse that distance*, is much greater than the difference between an hour for a telegram, and under a minute for an e-mail.

*Generally, it would have been received, routed, and re-sent several times between the UK and Australia, and that would add time. If it took 5 minutes to transmit/receive, and another 5 minutes to route it to the next station down the line, you can see where an hour for a message from the UK to Australia or vice-versa is reasonable.

Considering my professional background in Morse code, and the fact that I use it quite often still as a hobby, I've been thinking about sending Western Union a resume and cover letter, applying for a position as a telegrapher. I'd *LOVE* to see the rejection letter for that one.

A wire and a wide range antenna tuner wouldn't break the bank and it's easy to put up just about anywhere. I worked a station in Argentina with 5 watts on 10 meters a few days ago with this and a piece of wire stretched across the ceiling and up into my attic.

Telegraphs, and the need to use as few letters and numbers as possible are why, when I learned to fly, I had to learn how to read weather reports that look like this:

TANANA VLY FC...VALID UNTIL 250200
...CLOUDS/WX...
FEW002 SCT040 BKN070 TOP 160. ISOL BKN040 -SHSN.
W PANN/SE PABI ISOL CIGS BLW 010/VIS BLW 3SM -SHSN BR.

PASSES...MENTASTA...ISABEL...MVFR CIG SHSN.
...TURB...
NIL SIG.
...ICE AND FZLVL...

Even thought we'd had computers with internet and the ability to send as much data as you want for years, this is still what comes up if you go looking for forecasts.

Um, you do know that I'm talking about *MOBILE*, right? I chatted with him using CW on 28.051 MHz, while driving home with a mess of Broccoli soup from Paneras, using a straight key wedged between the driver and passenger seats of my car.

dittybopper: Um, you do know that I'm talking about *MOBILE*, right?

Oh, duh. No HF mobile for me yet.

12 and 15 were good this weekend too. I've been licensed for about a year and worked about 30 countries. Just this weekend I worked about 20 more.

I use an 80 meter horizontal loop for everything, with balanced line back to a tuner in the shack. It's way too long for 10 meters and I only end up with about 50 watts out on 10 with the poor match I get.

Late last night it just occurred to me that I could use an 11 meter mag mount antenna I have for 10, I stuck it outside on top of a storage cabinet by my patio that has a metal top. It's about 1.2 to 1 on the bottom end of 10 meters, if I was using it when I heard KL8DX I probably would have worked him too. Hopefully he'll be back.

Your problem is that you are going up against guys running 500 to 1500 watts, who are using yagis. One hundred watts to a wire, or a short vertical, just isn't going to cut it for SSB pileups, but 100 watts to a wire often will break a CW pileup. Not always, but more often than on sideband.

Plus, that metal cabinet is a pretty small groundplane at 10 meters. Try it, though. Experiment beats theory any day of the week, and when 10 meters is open, a wet string will work.

/Been a licensed amateur for almost 22 years now.
//Use Morse professionally for the 4 years before I was licensed.

Would be amusing no doubt. Bout the same as sending an application to DuPont to be an Alchemist I suppose. "Sirrih, I am an Alchyemisthe, hast thou need of art such as thine?"

FTA: "A rudimentary version of the Internet - not much more advanced than two tin cans and a string - had been born. But it worked, and it grew."

It amuses me when non-technically inclined morons write articles about technical subjects. The Telegraph was as far removed from the can and string as the wright brothers flyer and a 747. Or the telegraph and the iPad. Bozo also forgets to note that it was 99.99% business communications in those days. Far too expensive to send a telegram on a casual basis.
