Tremendous WS so far. I loved Napoli's HR - I basically love all violent home runs.

Yup. As much as it sucked watching it with my Cardinals jersey on, that ball was murdered. Looked like a Pujols shot.

This has been a brawl and I can't wait to see if Carpenter can pitch another gem tonight. If he can shut out the Rangers like we were last night, it'll make for a Hell of a game when they bring it back to STL.

Have you heard the STL radio call of that home run? It's hilarious:

hahahaa, gotta love Mike Shannon. I'd much rather have him announce than Joe Buck.

I wonder if anyone has ever said, "Do you know who I really like? Joe Buck."

Besides Joe Buck, of course.

I had this conversation with someone during game 3. The number of people that I've met that loathe Joe Buck outnumbers the number that simply tolerate him. By a significant margin.*

My theory on why he's still atop the sportscasting pyramid is that he's super network-safe. The execs love him because nobody ever got fired for going with Joe Buck.

*I do hang out with a lot of Cards fans, so there could be a very potent comparing-with-Jack-Buck tendency that makes us hate him.

You're probably right. Unfortunately the flip side of that is that the guy never tells any interesting/funny stories, and anything of the sort while announcing.
I think that is a huge part of the allure of our older announcers. Listening to Harry Caray or Jack Buck, or Vin Sculley, or even Shannon is different.
You feel like you're sitting with your Dad or Grand-dad while at the game. Great stories and banter about all things baseball.
Joe Buck has none of it, and I think it's why he's so unremarkable.

I have no idea how, given the money they invest in airing the World Series, they pick both Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. Buck isn't interested in baseball and it shows. McCarver is interested in baseball, but doesn't understand it.

I keep thinking that C.J. is going to snap out of whatever funk he's in and pitch a good one.

They used to play some of the funnier hometown announcers' calls on XM's baseball channel, and Ron Santo was a frequent offender. My favorite was when the opposing team hit a homer and, like with the one last night, it was a no-doubter as soon as it left the bat. The PBP guy was doing his thing, and you could hear Santo in the back going "oh, god" in the most dejected, disgusted tone possible.

Considering Vin doesn't do games East of the Rockies anymore, probably a West coast World Series and/or be able to do them from home.

/Not a deal breaker, just sayin...

I lived in Chicago and would listen to Cubs games every now and then (admittedly I'm a hard core White Sox fan). Santo was the worst. There's homers and then there's Santo- who went way beyond being a homer. He was like the guy in the bar that takes every bad play waaaaaay too seriously. I mean, in between constantly campaigning for himself to be voted into the hall of fame.

Oh, several. There's Central Time (which is what both the Cards and Rangers follow), Mountain Time (for those living in the Rocky Mountains), Pacific Time (L.A.), and, my personal favorite, F**k-Your-Mom Time (the time of day when Captain Steroid f**ks your mom). :D

Where will tonights strike zone be?

Definitely enjoying the series, considering I'm not a fan of either team. Even the one blowout was historic. My hunch is it will go 7, and whoever wins tonight will lose game 6 and win the finale.

Still in awe over Andrus' diving grab and glove flip. That may have saved the whole series.

I admit that Colorado is in a top 20 time zone.

I'd be happy with Krukow and Kuiper. Jon Miller is good. Bob Uecker's banter is hysterical, and while he's known for that, I also appreciate his eye for baseball.

antidisestablishmentarianism: Where will tonights strike zone be?

I hate that this is an issue, but it is. There was a Yankees-Tigers ALDS game where the top of the strike zone was at the helmet.

Some day, they'll let PitchFx call balls and strikes, instantly sending the decision to the umpire's earpiece. This way, the fans still see a fat man in a funny outfit gesticulating wildly, but pitchers and hitters actually get the same rules every game. Works just fine for tennis serves.

I say make it a free-for-all and assign Bob Davidson, Joe West, Laz Diaz, Angel Hernandez, and C.B. Bucknor to umpire the World Series.

I see LaRussa benched Jay and is playing Skip in center. I don't have a problem with this. I like Jay and think he will be a good player for the Cardinals, but he just wasn't going to make it happen in this series.

That Shannon call of the Napoli home run is classic. The undersell in that call is just right, born of frustration and resignation. Joe Buck, take heed. THAT is how you undersell a game call.

He'll give the same "Swing and a home run" call for Cards no-doubters too, only he'll then continue to coach the Card HR saying "get up, get up, get up" as it soars into low Earth orbit.

Amen.

He used to host the annual auction at my high school (from which he graduated) and it was awesome working that event. He'd get in the sauce and a little and it would be laughs the whole night. I remember thinking at one of them, "This guy just farking has it made."
