I have (or, rather, had) a Mazda 626 that got as far as 267,000...but the rust took it out of commission.

Indeed. :-/

He must have changed every part in the undercarriage 20 times and gone through 30 mufflers. Roadsalt tends to destroy Hondas.

The quote in the fark title is misleading. The company spokesperson was referring to how well the owner maintained his vehicle. He's saying that most people don't maintain their cars and that's why they break down. Not claiming that they intentionally build their cars to break.

RedfordRenegade: I used to by all about buying American goods until I bought a Honda generator about 8 years ago. Now pretty much everything I own (small engine wise) is a Honda and I just bought a Honda Civic Hybrid which Mrs. Redford and I both enjoy.

For some reason Honda just does things right.

Use to have a Honda Civic and loved it (totaled in a flood a while ago), was looking at cars again recently, and the new Honda Civic is possibly my least favorite car I have ever been in or driven. Aside from looking ugly now, it is probably the most uncomfortable car I have ever driven, and it had some of the worst blind spots possible. Plus they basically don't make 4 doors as manuals anymore, instead almost all of their manuals are coupes (which look even worse), plus the added crap of even worse blind spots and a pain to get in the back seat AND all coupes are considered "high risk" so higher insurance.

So yeah fan of Honda but I think they did things horribly wrong with the civic.

I had a 91 accord with 400k+ Kilometres on it. It ran pretty well when I parked it in 05. and there wasnt anything wrong with it then.Ive had 3 brand new vehicles since and I Kinda wish i still had it.

The little Honda my wife drives is a quarter of the way there. I'm hoping to get at least 300 - 350k out of it because I can't afford a new car payment and the thing is economical as hell to drive. It looks like hell, though. She has hit at least 5 deer with it in the last year or two, and I stopped fixing cosmetic damage to it years ago. Half the front bumper is gone, the hood is all smashed in, and the driver's window will fall down into the door if you're not careful. Still runs like a top, though.

My father's made it to 251K - he gave it up because he was not allowed to drive anymore. The &^**&^ sold it to get it out of his garage when I would have loved to have gotten it. First manual I ever drove.

My 2003 Honda Element made it to 178K before a Progressive Insured driver totalled it by hitting me from behind at 90MPH. Progressive is in it for the money (duh) get a lawyer and expect them to try and screw you worse than most other agencies. They would not even pay to replace with an exact model with the same mileage. I had to involve a lawyer. The lawyer was just amazed with the statement "I have never dealt with such brain dead people".

Honda indeed does things right. I remember renting a Civic hybrid for a road trip: at speeds of 80 mph with the A/C going it got 40 mpg and I didn't feel a loss of power.

I live in Madison, WI and in spite of all the salt on the streets in the winter, I swear that 1/3 of the cars in this town are either 20-year old Accords or Toyota products. The damn things just won't die.

Toyota Starlet, (1982)... Got 310,000 on it, and the only things I had to have done to it was replacing a water pump and a radiator... The radiator wasn't even the car's fault. Idiots steam cleaning it for me left it out on an extremely cold night and cracked it...

Had a 626 that had about 220k on it it..
Had a Saturn SW1, (1997), with 200K on it before it died for good...

//Cheap and keep them for a long time...

I drove our '90 Accord to 276,000 miles. It was a terrific car, super reliable with great pickup and nimbleness. It was wrecked and repaired twice and you'd never know it without a CarFax. The only major expense was when I had to replace the front yoke that cracked at about 220,000. I traded it when Mrs. Jitsu badgered me into buying a car with air bags after she had a wreck. The CRV I traded it for is about to roll 200,000. I just had to replace a leaky radiator on it but that's all that it has needed other than standard maintenance items recommended in the manual. It got rear-ended once and the offending car bounced off of the spare tire though his hood was all caved in (it was a late-model Chevy). When this one finally falls apart in a decade or so I'm thinking maybe I'll get another Honda.

2011-10-24 02:34:49 PM
If I maintain my current average distance traveled, and assuming that I do not replace the vehicle earlier, my 2010 Honda Civic Si will have traveled one-million miles at some time in 2112.

My diesel Jetta made it to 296K before it ate itself on a trip to Florida. The only thing worse than losing a faithful car like that is being in Yeehaw Junction for any reason.

Maybe if your state was properly cooled you wouldn't be such a bunch of smelly, drooling idiots, huh?

A Honda car? Sure, but there are more than a few Honda motorcycles that have reached that mark. I've seen two Blackbirds with over a million miles on them.

Also: This isn't even the first car^, just the first "documented by the manufacturer"

If I had to drive a 1980 Honda Accord for that long, I'd welcome death right now.

I've owned 4 Hondas now. The longest lasting was a Civic that I bought off the lot after finishing college (and getting a good job). I drove that thing for just shy of 200K. Then came family and what-not so a coupe wasn't going to cut it.

I sold that Civic and bought a CRV which I drive today. The engine and transmission on that Civic was rock solid even after 200K. Road salt and a hard life were starting to take their tole. The body was still good but all the little motors that controlled the windows started going south and some of the wiring was starting to age as well. I'm fairly sure there was a leak somewhere on the driver's side where the window met the door.

Most reliable car I ever owned.

/The wife's Toyota is no slouch.
/We couldn't get rid of the Ford fast enough; it blew up halfway through the payments.

Wife drives a 98 CR-V with about 140,000 on it. We have owned it since new. Only thing we have replaced (other than tires, filters, etc.) is the radiator (cost $98 and I did it myself). We plan on it being my daughters first car in about 5 years.

I had a 2004 Acura RL with 105,000 when I sold it and got a 2005 Pilot. Have never had a break down in any Honda.

My lawn mower, PWC (2005 AquaTrax F-12) and generator are all Honda.

Loves me some Honda.

FWIW, many Honda portable motors are designed and built in the US. Honda hydrostatic mowers are some of the best made, and they were (are?) designed and built in TN back when I had one.

My Acura TSX was actually built in Japan (2005), and it seems to be complete unaffected by how I've driven it for the 70K miles I've had it. I don't hit it too often, but let's just say I know where the rev limiter kicks in. Not all that fast of a car, but man it's fun for a sedate little 4-door. The manual transmission has the greatest notchy feel of any I've driven. I wish they hadn't caved and started making them with big engines.

I really think most auto manufacturers are turning the corner though. I reluctantly accepted a Hyundai as a rental recently and I was completely floored at how much of a joy it was to drive. Compare that to the lame Malibus I've been getting that I can't see out of and can't support my long legs in. Freaking Hyundai. Who knew?

I had an 85 Celica GT I took to 350k

2011-10-24 02:48:56 PM
After 250k, the maintenance costs on all of the replacables must have been astounding. Probably could have bought at least one new car with a warranty with all the money this guy sunk into that. Wonder what condition the frame is in? A stiff breeze would probably disintegrate it.

Cant really identify with someone who would hang onto a car that boring for that long, but diff strokes i guess.

My experience with Honda is similar. I drove an 1985 Civic for just under 200K miles before I moved up to a V-6 Accord. I still own that car and it has 137K miles on it and it is just fine. I also have a 2007 V-6 Accord. I've had no problems with them. The only major problem I've ever had was with the Civic. At 160K miles the crank shaft drive pin broke and I had to have it towed to a Honda dealership. I was looking at a $1000 repair and considering ditching the car for a new one. About an hour after the car arrived at the dealership, I got a call from Honda Motor Corp to tell me that it is their position that the crank shaft drive pin should never break and that they were replacing the crank shaft free of charge. The car was 11 years old at the time.

Honda just makes great cars and they take good care of their customers. I've heard similar thinks about Toyota.

My old Fit had a Mugen shifter in it and that was by far the best M/T I have had the pleasure of driving. My current Subaru, even with a Rallitek shifter, doesn't even come close to the Honda.

I agree, my 94 T-Bird had a wonderful ride, super plush. But, I swear it had a slush box for a transmission and the motor was burning oil like mad before I even had 100k miles on it.

waterrockets: I reluctantly accepted a Hyundai as a rental recently and I was completely floored at how much of a joy it was to drive.

Had same reaction with the Sonata I recently rented; I loved it. I enjoyed driving it more than my current 06 Civic, which I really love. That Hyundai felt like it was made by a totally different company than the POS Elantra I rented a couple of years ago. They've really changed for the better.

I inherited a '99 civic from my father my senior year of highschool. I took that baby to college with me in upstate NY. Needless to say, in the 4 some-odd years I've owned the vehicle I've replaced: Brakes, brake lines, timing belt, muffler, exhaust (2x,) catalytic converter with O2 sensors, rear-passenger side window (after someone broke it,) spark plugs, and the hood latch (after my father snapped it trying to open the hood.)

The hood is rusting only on one side so it appears to have a snaggle tooth. I got rear-ended 2x in the same spot on my rear bumper and it's held onto the frame by zip ties.

The transmission at this point is jolting, the exhaust is fully detached from the muffler, and it has a nasty habit of shutting itself off while I'm driving the vehicle.

Needless to say, i can't wait to get rid of the farking thing at 183k.

/probably forgot something that i replaced or had fixed.

Sounds like an alignment problem - hitting the deer could have caused that.
