You've never had a relationship with someone where at different points in time you are very fond of them and then totally annoyed with them? It is actually quite common. Perhaps you've never had a relationship with anyone long enough to experience it.

No, it's just Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crud, but the remaining 10% makes it all worthwhile. The two sentiments you hear reflect the 10% and 90%, respectively.

One of the jobs of a husband in a long-lasting marriage is to have the decency to die before his wife, so she can have a few "golden years" at the end in which she doesn't have to work so hard.
