I'm pretty much aetheist (and drunk), but if you have a problem with this (and are OK with getting Christmas/Chanukah off) go fark your self. The demographics support it and that particular section of NJ...

As long as Christmas is still a legal holiday in America, I have no problem with this whatsoever.

I mean, ideally, I'd like to see NO religious holidays as legal holidays (since we are a secular nation) but if we're going to celebrate Christmas, might as well let a predominantly Hindu community celebrate Diwali!

Hey, I remember getting Gen. Pulaski day off in Chicagoland, so, if you can get that off... all bets are off.

No surprise there. I'm just surprised that Edison Township hasn't granted the same request for Diwali off yet.

Cool beans, brah(man).

"New Jersey is an epicenter for Hindu activity."

So when do we get an Indian version of Jersey Shore?

FTFA: "This is really a reflection of the demographics. Schools don't close to celebrate holidays," said Michael Yaple, spokesman for the New Jersey School Boards Association. Having classes on these days, Yaple says, results in a big groups of students missing class and having to make up work.

Or, let's go the other way. Cut down summer vacation a bit, and give them every major religious holiday off. Including Ramendan.

What fascinates me, as a true Christian, is how the Vedas are treated as anything more than fairy tales.

In the Judeo-Christian faith, the holy books are predominantly historical, but the Vedic works are anything but. The closest analog I can think is how Scientology has taken root without any real basis in anything but the demented rantings of a third-rate science fiction author.

That said, more power to the Canadians for not being so close-minded as to deny these people their opportunity to worship as they see fit.

are more Indians there than in many cities in India.

For the record, yes, I also believe humanity is fallen and sinful and needs to be forgiven and reunited with our Creator. That's why we're all so miserable and stare at boxes all day and avoid thinking too much. It's all part of the evil force's plan to keep us from realizing the truth. But the Creator loves us anyway and keeps asking us to come back.

Go for it. I have no problems with your beliefs. You are more than welcome to believe whatever you want. My problem is only with saying that your set of beliefs are inherently more 'believable' than Hinduism or Islam or Judaism, or whatever.

However, Patel said, he and community members spent two years asking board officials to consider the holidays because of the township's large Indian-American population.

And in some Catholic parts of Massachusetts you have Good Friday off because a lot of families want to observe that holy day. I think Jews have too many special days to close schools so the district offers some other accomodation, even though Newton is like one third Jewish.

What's really stupid is what Cambridge did, closing school for a Muslim holiday for political correctness rather than because a large number of students care.

Um, No. Satanists do not believe in God, and don't really believe in Satan. The part of their belief system that covers that amounts to basically trolling for power: people are scared of Satan, so let's use that fear against them.

If anything, they believe in self-empowerment by rejecting the cultural mores of society and abandoning the ideas of good and evil as they are commonly understood.

Not to mention the fact that the cultural activity of circumcision came about because it was a sensible thing for desert-dwellers (according to its inventors, the Egyptians and Nubians, who influenced the immediate areas), and the religious excuse only came about when the Greeks put pressure on the Syrians, telling them to stop the practice.
