There's another one off CA-58 near Mojave, CA.

I could spend days there just walking around

They aren't abandoned dumbmitter, they're being stored there and parted out.

Reminds me of the huge one in Tuscon. I've driven past that while visiting family, it's a total kick.

I think Mythbusters went there for one of their airplane myths.

There are a few more of these in the southwest.

Of course AMARC at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson
Pinal Airport in Marana, AZ
Kingman, AZ
Mojave, CA
Roswell, NM
and Greybull, WY

That's way cool. I would love to be able to go mess around those things. Just to poke around and see all the parts of the planes you never get close to on a flight.

The little things in the lower right, woven into a stack, are B-52s. See if you can find the helicopter in flight, the old Air Force 707 marked "United States of America", the B1 bombers, the rocket stages and the odd things that look like flying darts.

cpubus: can you still get in trouble for posting those pictures? would that be considered proof of trespassing?

Yep. And they left fingerprints behind, too. The pictures are cool and all, but they just posted a confession that the police don't need a search warrant to see. Of course, the guy writing this is in London, and it's damned unlikely the US would seek extradition on simple trespassing, but he could end up on a do-not-fly list for his troubles. The other guys are locals.

I heard hold the line by Toto on the radio the other day. Always gives me a mental image of riding a motorcycle across the desert at dawn to the airport from my safe house in Las Venturas.

Great game.

That's pretty cool. I love and/or am saddened by the bone yard in Tucson. Every time I fly in there, I drive by the place and have to stop and look.

I have to ask. Does anybody know what it takes to get permission to go inside there? I would just love to spend a whole day poking around.

I couldn't find the helicopter or the 707, but I was wondering what the hell the darts are. They don't look like US aircraft

If you're looking at what I'm looking at, they're F111s. Found the two D21 drones, but not any rocket parts. What are those near?

Yeah, the ones I was looking at were just to the right of the...radar planes? Don't know what they're called, the ones with the large discs on top. Those are F111's?

Off-topic: why are old people moving to Florida, when the weather in California makes for superb storage conditions for old things? I've been to Florida, it seemed humid and hot, I think I would feel a whole lot better in Cali.

It'd be fun to mock up a bunch of flying saucers, X-wings, etc in time for the next Google earth update photo, then sit back and watch the international hilarity.

Bing maps is sometimes better. And lets you rotate the image to let you look from the South, West etc Not just the same image, actually different POV.

Found the 707. What was that? The two 707 AF1's are both in museums.

Its more regional than that. East coasters tend to move to Florida, Midwesterners tend to go to d the gulf states. West coasters often end up in Nevada and Arizona.

Don't think so. Cant see any windows on the one I found, so it could be a tanker or a airborne command post type with blocked up windows. The paint scheme looks different, and the "America" is further back on the fuselage. On you link the wing meets the body under the "E", on the pic I found it is under the "C"

/Could have been repainted of course.

Yeah, looking at google they're E-2's. Anyhow, the planes I was asking about originally are at 32.15816,-110.830705. Are those F111's?

C-5s. Largest US transport plane ever.

Uncle Wiggly: The little things in the lower right, woven into a stack, are B-52s.

See where all those C-130s are at the corner of Kolb and Escalante? Back before the Gulf War (the first one), there were B-52s clear out to the fence. Looked like a mess from the ground, but from the air you could see they had them packed in as tightly as they could possibly get. I think they pulled a bunch out for the Gulf War, and a good bunch of the remainder were executed guillotine-style. I think some of the remains are down near the "corner" of Kolb and Yuma St. In fact, I think the ones you're referring to are being executed in place.

/ I notice they've been moving F-15s and F-16s in :^(

Ooh, wait just a minute... here's the real Davis Monthan AFB prize (new window).

Note: When I click on this link, it first loads as a lower-res image showing two of the type, but the high-res then updates with just one. Doo-da doo-doo Doo-da doo-doo!!

factoryconnection: Note: When I click on this link, it first loads as a lower-res image showing two of the type, but the high-res then updates with just one. Doo-da doo-doo Doo-da doo-doo!!

The "low-res" is the overhead view; the "high-res" is the 45° view. They were taken at different times, since the 45° shows a bunch of C-141s that the overhead doesn't (I don't remember if they're still there right now). The overhead looks "low-res" because the exposure's screwed up, so the picture's completely blown out.
