my cousin broke my keyboard, and the up and left buttons are farked up, they dont work. is there any way i can fix it myself, or do i need to bring it in?

2001-11-03 10:20:40 PM
Wraith Take a screw driver to it... and push the keys out. That will be $25.

2001-11-03 10:23:31 PM
Cool! They posted it. I knew you weren't a commie, Drew! *grin*

It's usually much cheaper to by a new keyboard than get an old one fixed.

I'm a flaming moderate.

That is the meaning of fark: extremism bad, moderation good

Its more 'right-wing' than 'capitalist' - they aren't anywhere near equivilent. Adam Smith is rolling over in his grave.

think again, my Logitech Wireless (keyboard + mouse) ran something like $150 when I first got it.

(strange - thread about socialism, we talk about socialism; thread about capitalism, we talk about keyboards; hmm....)

btw, there hasn't been a photoshop in days! what's up with that?

They have this quote on thier banner
Individual rights are the means of subordinating society to moral law. What the hell does this mean?

2001-11-03 11:05:55 PM
Ok, I suck at html. 'what the hell does this mean?' is not included in the banner

Glwtta I agree... where have the photoshops gone? Drew... come on post a nice late night photoshop!

There's one coming at midnight

The presence of Leonard Peikoff reveals that this is an Objectivist magazine.

For what it's worth. I like Objectivism, but most Objectivists are jerks. Kinda like California, in a way.

2001-11-03 11:30:10 PM
Glwtta: How long ago did you get that keyboard/mouse? I bought my Logitech wireless RF keyboard/mouse combo two years ago for $45 at a computer show.

2001-11-03 11:31:52 PM
DREW OWNS YOU ALL!!!

2001-11-03 11:32:37 PM
Brett: I am assuming it means what it says - that maintaining individual rights is a mechanism for making a society adhere to a moral code. It's wrong, but that's what it says.

Drew: Must have a photoshop... getting the shakes... midnight is too long! (what time zone?)

Ohmy - I didn't get mine at a computer show, in fact I got it at a crappy store (almost never buy computer stuff in stores normally) because my old one died (a nasty incident involving cat-puke) and I needed to get one quickly, but wanted to upgrade to the utter sweetness that is the logictech combo. It was a while ago, don't remember when exactly. ($45 is still cheaper than what you would pay for a simple M$ split-key nowadays)
I did want to get that split-key that is made entirely out of a touchpad with repgrogrammable "keys" (something like $300), even signed up for their "advance order/reserve" thing like a year ago, but haven't heard from them since. That thing looked sweet though!

photoshop! w00t!! (going looking for pics of lenin, trotsky and dzerdzinskij to keep this on topic)

2001-11-03 11:44:04 PM
Glwtta: I understand about the whole M$ keyboard thingy. I do own an M$ Internet Keyboard Pro (PS2/USB combo) and love it (it was a gift.) I still use my Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo on my server which is across the room so I don't have to walk or shove my chair over to the console.

Drooling over a photoshop! Been nearly 48 hours since my last fix!

Glwtta: Why is it wrong? Guaranteeing individual rights ensures that individuals won't be sacrificed "for the common good".

<broad assumption>
I am using "midnight" means central time, not eastern, since the server location is Kentucky.

I submitted a "Photoshop this pic" link today. Hopefully it will get posted. It could be a lot of fun . . .

I submitted one yesterday too. Somehow I think our submissions will get dropped as we have had too much to prepare ;)

2001-11-03 11:57:32 PM
i popped the keys off and cleaned it with a drip if alcohol and a q-tip. the farking buttons still dont work and i cant play any games now wahhh!

2001-11-03 11:58:05 PM
I am really looking forward to ANY photoshops this weekend as I am on travel next week and will only be able to view, not partake in the events. Though my laptop is better than my usual photoshop workstation I will be too busy to try, though if a lull moment happens I will try!

2001-11-04 12:00:06 AM
Wraith: Sounds like you need a new $10 keyboard from Walmart. If cleaning with alcohol doesn't work, and lifting the rubber strip from the printed circuit board and cleaning with an eraser doesn't work, give it up and get a new board.

Why is it wrong? Guaranteeing individual rights ensures that individuals won't be sacrificed "for the common good"

It's an oversimplification and a misdirection - there is no such thing as "moral law" (that, incidently, is why organazed religions are failing at providing it); morality is very much an individual thing, built on understanding of ethical principles and and a general desire to coexist well with your fellow humans (or even a desire to see to their well-being); you can neither force one to be moral, nor is that concept applicable to a society as a whole.

That statement confuses cause and effect here - "you force a set of rule on a society, and it will become moral" vs. "when the members (a majority at least) of a society are moral, they will create a set of rules reflecting their morality"

Holy Jesus - Allah - God - Budda - Great Spirit - Mother Earth - Toledo:

Glwtta said "individual".

2001-11-04 12:53:39 AM
Well i threw the board and now only the up key is farked.

2001-11-04 02:48:53 AM
Glwtta: You need to keep in mind that this site (if what I've read in the comments here is right) is run by Objectivists. They believe all morality is absolute. Tell one of them that morality is subjective and they'll scream A=A at you, or if you're really lucky, something more obscure that won't make any sense to you at all because you haven't been indoctrinated by reading everything Ayn Rand ever wrote. Interesting stuff, most of it really good, but completely insane when taken to extremes.

A trivia question that's been bothering me: In The Deerhunter when Fredo wants to borrow a pair of boots (character portrayed as a "second hander" throughout the film), Robert DeNiro's character holds up a bullet and says, "See this? This is this. This is not some other thing." Obvious reference to Ayn Rand, or coincidence?

These people give capitalism a bad name. Filth. This is why there are so many middle-class socialist brats.

2001-11-04 04:01:13 AM
People who read Ayn Rand and roughly the intellectual equivalent of Celestine Prophecy acolytes, in my book.

Want I wouldn't give to see to her fragile little ideology buckle under the ill Marxist dialectic technique. Unfortunately, most Randheads only think that Marx "is the bad guy", and completely fail to grasp the Marxist cultural critique. These are people that acutal think that capital isn't an abstraction.

Wankers.

2001-11-04 04:21:08 AM
Wow, your critique of Objectivists ended up sounding a whole lot like something an Objectivist would say....

2001-11-04 04:22:03 AM
For those of you "wankers" who don't understand the Marxist cultural critique, it's rather simple:

Rich People: Bad, Evil, etc. (imperialistic monarchy)
Poor People: Good, Saintly, etc. (victims of said monarchy)

It's kind of similar to the Klukker "black=bad, white=good" cultural critique.

As for Rand... no opinion.

2001-11-04 04:35:30 AM
Actually, the above comment was directed at Rhizome.

The amazing part is that someone actually thinks (after the Berlin Wall, Tiananmen Square, Stalin, Mao, the Gulags and the Cultural Revolution) that Marx isn't the "bad guy".

Sheesh.

Glad to see I'm not the only insomniac.

Marx never proposed a political structure. His primary novelty was appropriating Hegelian dialectics to materialist basis. His critique on the functioning of capitalism, being intrinsicly oppositional to and dominating toward labor, is not wrong. It's simply the truth of matter.
His inovation was in demonstrating the material socioeconomic basis of class structure and consciousness. He was a wrong in predicting a global proletariat revolution, but that doesn't invalidate his social critique. Capitalism is the economic basis reinforcing Bourgeoisie ideology in terms of actual social practice. I don't think that's a very controversial statement. After all, what percentage of the American population hold how much of the total wealth?

It may have been true in his time, although his insistence on filter all societal interaction through his notions of 'class struggle' weaken his argument significantly. As for today, the application of his ideas and the evolution of economic structures have rendered his ideas completely obsolete.

2001-11-04 12:08:39 PM
in a sense. Yeah, the Bourgeoisie have been replaced by multinational corporation and social situation is not identical to the historical situation he was in, but dialectical materialism as a methodology is still of crucial vitality. That why I think Marx rocks. It was the way he thought of social critique, not his conclusions, that makes Marx relevant. I'm not interested in going to the length of defending this statement, but reducing all of Marx's novelty to just a class dichotomy short changes the richness of his ideas and writings.

by the way, i'm libertarian.
