fat boy: Twenty tons
Subby fail

Experts have revised predictions to say the debris will now reach the Midway Islands by winter and Hawaii in less than two years.

So Hawaii should expect this early December of 2013? Around the 7th, perhaps?

So, there is a chance of there being some dead bodies in there, correct?

2011-10-24 01:33:03 AM
I hope Hawaiians do the right thing and return that property to Japan.

Knowing it's going to end up washing ashore near the thugs who live in Waianae and Makaha doesn't raise my hopes very much.

Also, how long until the History Channel sees this and decides to combine "The Deadliest Catch" with "American Pickers"?

Its ok guys, with all that debris passing by Midway, maybe they can scrounge enough parts to finally fix the desalination plant there.

The words "twenty million" are in caps in the headline and they mention "million" atleast a million times in the article. Yet, subby completely ignored it.

The way things are going, This stuff might be welcomed. It could at least be scavenged for junk.
Maybe the islanders will find a camera and some film, and they can make a short movie detailing their location for potential rescuers.

Yeah, 20 tonnes is just 4 tonnes more than a man who owes his soul to the company store can lift. That's hardly impressive at all.

We should just dump a bunch of diesel and tires on it and set it on fire. Then ships could use the light to navigate. It could also be a tourist attraction, plus scientists could make it burn up before it hits
Hawaii.

They tried airplanes, submarines, balloons, and now this? They are tenacious. I say enough. This time let's use four bombs on 'em.

According to yesterdays article on Fark from the Boston Globe those dead bodies are likely to be renamed and sold as expensive Sushi.

That map shows the debris heading a little north for Hawaii, no? Maybe I misinterpreted it.

That also just looks like a reshop of that crazy radiation map people were slinging around right after the earthquake.

Click Click D'oh: ...That two years is assuming it doesn't get stuck in the giant pile of trash currently occupying the middle of the Pacific.

That trash pile in the Pacific Gyre is mostly foam, plastic and small floaty bits that don't protrude from the surface, so they are only impacted by currents. This debris clearly floats above the surface and is being pushed across by the Polar front, the winds that come up around Japan and cross over to the Pacific Northwest. If you follow the typical seasonal wind patterns, there's actually a greater chance that this stuff will go that route - towards BC, and Seattle, and Portland. I doubt Hawaii will be much affected.

I imagine some of this stuff will get waterlogged and sink before it hits the US coast, or broken up in storms and dispersed. But I suspect much of it will not, and it will most certainly start showing up on the coastlines unless Japan can pull of some major cleanup effort.
