If everyone made an effort to eat 20% less beef, we'd be there already. And btw - the rest of the article is pretty bleak, in that if true - it will only mean WW3.

I will eat 20% less beef when they let more lamb into my local grocery, and stop putting brine in the pork.

And the chicken. How is that legal? You're paying the meat price per pound for water.

This should make 5 or 6 guys a ton of money- the rest of us.... not so much.

If, in five years, we have achieved this, then we'll look back and wonder why the GOP fought it tooth-and-nail.

I hate when people make claims pertaining to the decline of American Manufacturing. Yes, I know the percentage of people involved in industry is decreasing year on year. The same thing happened in agriculture a hundred years ago.

We are still the world's largest manufacturer. We make more than Japan, Germany, Italy, and the UK combined.

Just remember, when this happens our rise means China will collapse. It will mean WWIII.... but we'll handle it, just like the first two. China knows this, that's why they are trying so hard to get their hands on our military technology.

Well the dollar will probably implode before that, so stock up on ammo.

There are shiat tons of good paying jobs that come from this, you do however need to live in a trailer in North Dakota to fully take advantage of that.

I'll believe it when I 'see' it. It would be wonderful to be 'self-sufficient' but I won't hold my breath.

Demand it. Tell the manager you want it, and buy it often. Or shop elsewhere.

Until the European debt crisis causes a market crash and causes a drop in demand (and therefore price) of oil, therefore making oil shale and fracking too expensive to be profitable. But that's just one aspect of the article, I suppose. And speculative. Wait, what was I contributing again?

I bet the Euro collapses first, which leaves the dollar as the default king of the mountain for at least another 20 years. European governments have to buy pension bonds somewhere!

hm, i will believe it when i see it - when jobs are available and pay rates are actually reasonable enough to allow folks to buy a home and also pay for other things besides the basics.

and the derpy comments below the article...ugh...

Hey guys, look over there. Two happy queers are being happy. We need to stop this. Forget about the article! We gotta stop them queers.

So next year we begin converting to woodburning steam cars, and cut down all the forests?

/we can't eat less beef because we can't grow crops on most pasture land.

Thank you!!! Have you ever seen Texas cow land? Good luck farming that. There is 3 inches of topsoil over lot's of limestone. You grow shrub trees or you raise animals.

It looks like they typically do. But it may be part of the Telegraph's Manual of Style to write out percent rather than use the symbol.

ABC has been doing a number of reports on Made in America (new window) that shows that buying American products, on average, costs no more then foreign goods. What I'd love to see is a law where buying American goods is mandatory if you receive federal or state money. If just all our state universities used American made goods we'd be on the road to self-sufficiency once again.

're-inshoring'?

When did they inshore the first time - except in the dribs and drabs they've always done it?

I'm not sure how it is over there, but AP style dictates using the word "percent" rather than using the symbol.

"Self-sufficiency" is a lie in the face of an exponentially-growing world population. Overpopulation is a ticking time bomb. The shiat will soon hit the fan, one way or another.

The vast majority of beef does not come from the ranches of west Texas but from the high density feedlot where the cattle is fed corn. The Corn comes from the Corn Belt of Iowa, Illinois and surrounding areas. Grass fed beef is a rarity.

Yeah, but that isn't my point. If you have land in Texas west of the Colorado river, you can grow beef on it or mesquite/cedar trees.

True, the U.S. has had increasing oil production from shale, but will it be enough to offset the depletion of its more traditional crude oil sources? Nope.
Bottom line: global oil production entered a plateau a few years ago and has been flat. Peak oil isn't something we need to deal with in 2030 like some deniers say. It's something that's impacting us now, in 2011.

It doesn't have to be WW3, and if it comes to that it will likely be nuclear. It is absolutely inconceivable that the United States would actually lose the conflict, except in the sense that everyone would lose. If you think our leaders are too humane to push the button you haven't been paying attention, and furthermore at least 51% of the American public could be induced to approve of such a move.

"World power swings back to America"

Um... to where had it swung? Last anybody checked America still dominated the economy, military and every cultural aspect of every nation on the planet.
