...because buying a craft beer in a trendy DC pub is about the most expensive way to drink beer of which I can think? While crack is typically purchased from street vendors that don't need to finance a storefront, pay attention to pesky laws, and are quite willing to shoot you if you biatch about their prices?

Screw that. Get a couple of growlers, go to the brewery, get them filled, and you're in bliss for the evening for the cost of a cover charge at most of those stupid DC pubs. Leave the crack to the crackheads.

tl;dr: Because everything is ridiculously expensive in DC, at rates exceeding what the prevailing market rates would suggest when COL is taken into account. DC is its own culture. One that says, "Fark You" to everyone in it. That's what you get for living so close to politicians.

If the local guys are simply taking their cues from the larger market, then maybe it's the middle men-that is, the wholesalers and distributors-who bear the most blame for the high price of beer in the District.

Massachusetts has been cracking down on small breweries by forcing them to go through the state-mandated distributor system instead of selling direct.

I spent thirty plus dollars last night at a bar in DC, on craft beer. Nine freaking dollars for a 12oz draft of a good Belgian beer. If my friends hadn't been the ones inviting me there, I would have rebelled.

Admittedly, the prices were less galling when I had a few in me.

I used to live 3 blocks from Bardo Rodeo in Arlington. That was a nice 2 years.

I spend less than that in New Zealand for a craft beer. Something is wrong when it's cheaper to drink on a small island 2000km from anywhere than it is in the US.

It's taxes. No one pays taxes on illegal products.

It says it's going green at 10:40PM right now. I don't understand your point. You have TF, you can post in these threads. Hell you can post in them before anybody decides if they're gonna go green or not.

Ask craft-beer folks about prices and they tend to stress their product's artisan quality.

Oh for God's sake. Every food that doesn't roll out of a factory these days is "craft" and "artisan". The words have lost all meaning.

Because people who drink good beer by the pint will pay more for it than someone desperate for a $10 rock of crack, I'd think.

I read somewhere that in D.C. you can get some for less than the price of beer.

Complaining about a $7 pint of Guinness? I'm happy with anything lower than $10.

Washington is the seat of Empire. Everything is expensive there and the thousands of little emperors don't realize they are naked. This article must have been written by a naive 20-something, the marrow of which species that town feeds upon like a bloody cannibal ape.

/Washington would collapse without all the strong, nubile 20-something backs and bottoms who are willing to do nearly anything for that one career bump that might put them over the top in the competition for resources and power. The power to buy those expensive beers for those nubile drinkers is what The Washington Game is all about, people.

In Toronto it's about $6-7 and our pint is 25% larger. And Toronto isn't cheap. And our alcohol is taxed like crazy.

So idiotic local, state, and federal laws coupled with bar politics and peoples ability to pay more or less depending on location and financial climate make up the cost of a pint of beer.

/so the same as everywhere else

Which is largely bullshiat. Washington may be the "seat of the Empire" buts there are at least a half-dozen places in the "empire" that are more expensive and more useful for a naive 20-something to live to gain advantage.

Seriously, I'm not meaning to brag, but I've established myself amongst many of the "old school" bars of DC. I haven't paid full-price for a beer in years. My favorite bar is basically $20 all-I-can-drink at this point.

/Tip well, you will be rewarded int the end.

I've actually had a few friends that crack was bad to. I've known them my whole life, and only one ocassionally puffs on merryjewanna. No other drugs at all. It's the old pick up the street whore trick, which is unfair, because I know one of them picked up a woman for the first and only time in his life because the girl was hot and used to date one of his neighbors...I mean, how was he supposed to know? For whatever reason, they get pulled over (ghetto harassment) and even though the whore takes full responsibility for the crack, the cops still charged the dudes with constructive possession.

So, the question remains...is one $10 beer cheaper than a piece of crack? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?

/The world may never know

No different than anything else in that town.

Ah yes.
The doe-eyed scrivener is here (new window).

If you have to ask, you can't afford it. That is the reason it's so expensive, that is the test.

0/10, nobody has really been snobby about beer yet. Mostly cracks about politicians and such.

Besides being illegal, it messes up their faces. Sheen, Winehouse, Houston, Lohan are all great examples. The hard stare, screwed up smile, the bags under the eyes. Eventally people's faces start to melt into the same look if it isn't put in check.

Uncle Wiggly: It's taxes. No one pays taxes on illegal products.

What does the liability-insurance picture look like for establishments that serve alcoholic beverages these days? IIRC a bunch of states have passed dram-shop liability laws since the early 1980s that say, essentially, that if someone drinks in your establishment and gets in an accident on the way home, you're liable. Given that, and given the number of people in the U.S. who view the tort system as their own personal lottery, I can't imagine it's at all cheap to buy liability insurance for a bar these days. Someone has to pay it, and there's no way it's not built into the cost of the drinks.

I went to a bar in DC one night and had a 50 dollar tab, and wasnt even drunk.

/from Ohio where booze is cheap

Rents are ridiculously high here in DC, which is why it's common to see DC stores that were always busy close shop after a rent increase.

What I've learned from my ten years of barhopping in DC: people do not drink much beer. I'm talking volume, most people seem to have one or two over hours of pointless wharble, the most common phrase here is "What do you do." Too many martini/mojito drinkers, so I imagine pricing beer very near the martini price makes sense, I mean what's the alternative for the wallet conscious drinker, rail drinks?!

My friends and I no longer drink in DC, I'd rather go to Dogfish Head and get it from the source, at least then I'm only getting raked by the guys who make the stuff.

When I hear someone say beer snob, I always imagine someone who considers the Olive Garden to be authentic Italian cuisine. That puts it in perspective for me.

And the fact that you admit it's about getting drunk pretty much nails it.

Ever had a La Chouffe van 't vat? Live a little. Try flavour.

/yep - I went there

What do you call a fine for posession of a controlled substance. I consider it a tax to keep the wheels of government running, among other things.

That actually reminds of a few guys I knew in the military who had no fun at all, and were workhorses. They also happened to develop PTSD later on, as well. Hard to get any of those guys to "crack" a smile let alone remain in one piece if you joke with them about using crack.

$20? are you crapping me?

WHAT A RIP~ thats a $6 bottle at Top Foods in Olympia, Wa (where I first found it)

No idea how much it is in Louisiana (50 minutes from me now, 24 hour a day beer buying pleasure and anything that can be thought of...I can ask for and probably get)

20 bucks...ffs thats insane...I just want to drink one, not take it home and fark it.
