So it's just like the another 99% of apps in the market.. 1/2 working shiat filled with vulgar comments in the review section.

Why in the 21st century does it still sound like a farking speak 'n spell?

2011-10-23 07:36:27 PM
Why is there an article about this when there are much better alternatives already on the android market?

2011-10-23 07:36:50 PM
There was already something similiar to siri on android it just didn't do all the bot shiat which in itself is a really simple little trick and ultimately useless.

I've got an iphone 4, but...can someone explain the whole 'digital assistant' thing to me in a sane way?

I've never seen voice commands work anywhere within several hundred miles of where it would need to be for me to use it, and I don't keep apointments in my phone for the most part. I'm more than capable of googling or using an app to find stores nearby, and trust MY parsing algorithims much more than hers.

And I still function when the servers are down (well, as close as I ever get to it anyway).

It all just seems like it's interposing an extra layer of technology where it doesn't neccesarily need to be because everyone wants so very badly to have the Star Trek style technology where one just yells at a computer to get it to work.

I hope you mean "Look, Apple purchased vlingo!"

Stupid app is stupid. (Siri and it's reverse.)

There are and have been quite a few siri-like apps on android

2011-10-23 07:50:12 PM
What exactly is this app supposed to do??

I asked "what is the score for the denver broncos football game?"

answer: "I don't know"

Ok.... something more static...

"what is the capital of colorado?"

answer: "I do not know that either."

cleverbot is more useful.

kroonermanblack: I've got an iphone 4, but...can someone explain the whole 'digital assistant' thing to me in a sane way?

When I say "dial [name] at work" - it dials the name's work number. When I say "remind me when I leave home to pick up vodka" - it adds a reminder and when I leave home - my phone beeps to remind me to pick up vodka. When I say "play the blues" - it plays blues music from my library. And a dozen other things I've found useful.

Siri doesn't do everything and has issues (notably privacy and network issues during rollout) - but it does what it does way better than any other voice app I've ever experienced and does so consistently. And saying "wake me up tomorrow at 8am" takes a lot less work than opening up the clock app, choosing a bunch of settings, and saving it. Which is the entire point.

Just tried out iris. It's pretty bad. It sent a message to a friend okay, and searched the web, but trying to get it to set an alarm, open another program, or play music was a total failure.

When I say "I am horny" , it list the nearest escort agencies.
When I say "I want a happy ending" it lists the nearest massage parlors.
Does android do that?

You mean Apple bought it froma company who released it on the App Store, when 6 months before Apple released it as iPhone 4s ONLY, it was for all phones...

Apple totally innovated Siri, not invented.

Since a Farker in an earlier thread recommended it, I've been trying it out. It's okay, I haven't had a change to try it in drive mode though. The app is useful if you have a lot of contacts, then you can just hit the vlingo button, speak the name and it will bring up the contact if not dial it.

Personally for this to work like it really should, you need a phone battery that can handle this app being in listening mode all the time, and the app needs to be more intelligent. Yelling "Hey Vlingo" in car mode just to get it's attention gets annoying.

Pannous Voice Actions does everything Siri can and with the Ivona Amy English voice sounds very natural, just about the most natural device I've heard.

Voice Actions also came out six months ago and does all the "Wake me up tomorrow at seven" or "How old is Bill Clinton?" or even "What is ninety six times seven?" stuff and talks back to you as well.
See Video.
And go here and try the Amy voice.

Because faking the ebb and flow of a natural voice is really, really hard. Especially if you only have 1 recording of each word, and you need to combine those into natural-sounding sentences without hitting the Uncanny Valley.

/And I'm presuming that recording and storing EVERY single possible inflection for every word ever is impractical storage-wise (and picking the right one is hard too), and that natural-sounding voice modulation is difficult to impossible.
//Though as we've seen, with good recordings (and a somewhat monotonic accent), you can get really really close.

Bell Labs worked on this If I remember correctly. It's come a long way since C-64 S.A.M. A brand new voice synthesizer for the Commodore Sixty Four.

It was phonemes for that. Help me memorize The Gettysburg Address, with it's wacko voice.
