This is why, when you're in the woods, you should never carry a picture of what a bear might look like.

Hunter sees it through a scope, misunderstands, shoots. Game over.

Sure that's not the Marine? That would explain a few things.

I have to admit, that Marine's resemblance to a bear is uncanny.

If only he had survived, he could have made a living as a bear impersonator, if there was any demand for such a profession.

Am I the only one who learned "clearly identify your target before firing"? Did they stop requiring a safety class, before you're allowed to own firearms? I keep seeing reports of hunters shooting at anything that moves and accidentally murdering people. WTH? You're not in the middle of a firefight. Take the extra five seconds and pull the trigger only once you're SURE.

I'm not a hunter, but even I know you're supposed to have a clear target. You don't shoot just because you saw movement. There are reasons for this, and it isn't just because you might injure or kill another person, but because your goal is to kill whatever your hunting quickly & cleanly. That is if you're a responsible hunter.

Funny, when I took my hunter safety class the main thing they discussed was the inevitability that hunters do stupid shiat. They tried to warn about some things, but ultimately the expectation was when you go hunting, avoid hunting with idiots.

It was not until some of my first dove hunts where there were other hunters on the field that I realized why hunters do stupid shiat. Being sober is merely a suggestion, not a requirement. CSB: My dad would take me hunting with his friends, but he refused to go on afternoon dove hunts alot of times because the guys would all get drunk at lunch, then head back out into the field afterwards. That was about the time he'd call it a day.

seriously this guy isn't going to jail? FTA "I saw something move and shot it" - and that's legal?

Heck, if anyone you don't like ever goes into any wilderness, just murder them with a hunting rifle and tell the cops it was a terrible accident.

I guess you are unfamiliar with the term "a sound shot"? And it doesn't mean you took a well-constructed shot. My father quit hunting after he asked a couple of hunters if they got anything. "No, didn't see anything. Got off a couple of sound shots. That's it."

This is ehy old people shouldn't be allowed to own guns. I also think that most old people should be put into protective care homes as soon as they reach the age of 50. This would prevent anything like this happening again. I am willing to bet that if he hadn't shot the Marine, he probably would have driven his car into a farmers market on the return trip home. Either way, this just goes to show that old people are the cause of too many tragedies in this country.

Works some of the time. There are some who have gone to jail doing this because they werent smart enough to get away with it.

Is this one of the consequences that opponents of repealing Don't Ask, Don't tell were saying would happen?

2011-10-23 08:10:41 PM
Accidental? When you fire at movement, and kill a man, that's not an accident, that's manslaughter. If he fired at a bear, and hit a man, that would be an accident, but he didn't fire at a bear, he fired at movement. A man's movement.

This guys should not be allowed to walk free. He farked up bad enough to get someone killed. He needs to serve some time....for at the very least, negligence resulting in homicide..

Why no charges filed? Is it just me or is this always how these things turn out? There's no such thing as an "accidental" shooting.

CSB TIME!

I was deer hunting one evening and 35min after sunset (no more hunting time) I was walking down a logging road to my dad's truck when a doe jumped out of the wood and stood 50 yards from me. I didn't pull up my gun to shoot for two reasons. First, It wasn't legal any more and second, another 100 yards beyond this deer was an old guy.

MFW I walked past him, he asked why I didn't shoot at the doe.

That bullet would have cleared the deer and probably shot the old guy or a truck.

/Always know your target and what is behind it, this BS is inexcusable.
//Wear orange during hunting season
///Charge him with manslaughter

2011-10-23 08:26:07 PM
"...authorities said the shooting appeared to be accidental a clear case of negligence."

FTFY, Marion County Sheriff's Office.

This. The military generally takes destruction of government property seriously. If the guy won't be held to manslaughter charges, he should at least be billed for the cost of training the marine he killed.

Shooting at movement without a positive ID is some dumb shiat.

He had been hiking with a friend through a field and was wearing dark clothes

How could he had been mistaken for a bear? Those animals don't have dark clothes.

Simple answer: too many old people.
