NO ONE in human history has behaved well, with the exception of the people who never leave the sacred mountain in South America, and the Hopi, who invented popcorn, and who are therefore an advanced and enlightened race. So there.

You know, it's nice that pants-on-head-retarded arguments from Pajamas Media aren't restricted to just politics. It's reassuring that you can safely just do the opposite of anything they want or argue for and be right.

Why is it that conservatives seem so partial to the "since we can't make things perfect, it's pointless to try to make them better" argument? Raising taxes on the rich won't completely erase the deficit? Then don't even try it! Regulations can't make the market or the environment perfect? End all the regulations! Eating a vegetarian diet still results in some animals being killed? Eat steak every night!

kxs401: Why is it that conservatives seem so partial to the "since we can't make things perfect, it's pointless to try to make them better" argument?

Because that's the basis of conservatism - to refuse to improve, to wish for a better past that didn't exist. They refuse to consider anything new, to consider improving themselves, because the unknown is scary.

Conservatives have been wrong every single time in American history. Every major debate, every fight, has always been the eventual liberal victory over conservative opposition. Slavery, civil rights, environmental protection, isolationism against fascism. Every time, the conservatives have been beaten back by basic intelligence and rightness. If conservatives had won in American history, we'd still have slavery, much less voting rights for anyone who wasn't a white male, we would have happily let Hitler conquer Europe, and we wouldn't have cleaner water today. Events like Love Canal wouldn't be a think of the past, they'd be happening every day. When it comes to the United States, conservatives are simply WRONG.

It's hard to argue against a guy who uses unassailable primary sources.

Logic takes a holiday. If you extrapolate this specious logic to the environmental impact of say beef production, which despite this guys pie in the sky view of cows happily grazing on unarable land (in reality the grazing cattle provide less than 10 percent of the world's beef) it completely falls apart.

Current beef production is predominantly lot-raised and grain-fed animals that are wildly innefficient and have much more "blood on their hooves" (f you're going to look at the poor rats and mice that get killed in corn harvesters) than a vegan.

I'm an omnivore but when people go full tard like this it gets my gander up.

To the smug Vegans and Vegetarians: That produce you get.. you know the ones that aren't grown in your region and probably out of season... the fuel consumption alone is more harmful than eating meat. And if you don't think something didn't die to get it here.. you are kidding yourself.

Well, except that the medical science pretty much shows a diet of more than 12% animal protein and fat increases the risk of heart disease and cancer to very dangerous levels. Not that you would ever see that in the food recommendations put out by the government, as the meat industries, dairy industries, and pharma industries have pretty much full control over what gets released and what doesn't.

Vegans and meat eaters are both bad, that is why I am a cannibal. Sure you might argue that innocent animals had to die to feed most of the people I eat (whether they were vegan or not), but the point is that they would have caused a lot more animal deaths if I did not kill and eat them. By getting them while they are young and tender I prevent a maximum damaged to the environment (instead of going after the old ones who would die soon anyway and would not have had much chance to cause further harm anyway). I have to admit that I try for the fit an healthy ones rather than the fat McDonald kids, so I probably get a lot more vegetarians than if I picked them at random, but as the article points out you kill animals no matter what you eat.

Anyway, this is my modest proposal: eat people, it is the most ethical choice.

I recently went to Plum Bistro, a VEGAN (gasp!) restaurant in Seattle. It was really farking good! I was full, but not in a please-god-kill-me-with-a-food-baby way.

On the other hand, I LOVE the squab at Campagne.

This guy seems like a bit of a loon. The article is full of odd phrases and he just seems to be bitter at vegans...ex-girlfriend, maybe?

Seattle vegans are pretty bad though. Boycotting a restaurant due to foie gras? They are simply unaware that geese are natures Nazis...

Life alone has very little value to most people. I think most arguments for veg*nism (* here being a stand-in for the various things that fit between veg and ism) involve sentience.

"They claim to not cause harm to animals"

Any vegan who claims this does not know what they are talking about. HOWEVER, being vegan certainly does result in much less death of rodents, etc. due to mechanization because they are not filtering calories through a four legged farting machine. For every 1 gram of protein you get in beef, 7 were lost in poo, inedible cowparts, motion, etc.

There are also ethical reasons in terms of the environment and food security. You can simply feed more vegans per square foot than meat eaters with less polution. That statement about some land being usable for animals but not for growing food is crap. That might apply to some areas in sahel climate in Africa. In the US if you're growing soy and corn for cows you could switch the variety and grow soy and corn for people.

Venison is great. It's nice we don't have the population density as other countries, but this is not a feasable solution to our food problems.

There is fuel consumption for transporting meat too.

Look, I'm a meat eater with no plans on changing, but lets not lie to ourselves. Eating a vegan diet results in less animals being killed, especially if everyone were to do it.
