Fine, let's withdraw troops and see how long Karzai stays alive much less in power.

Yep, India would immediately occupy Kashmir.

A war with Pakistan would really suck.

China is aligned with Pakistan and technically still at war with India over territory China invaded.

India would love to settle a score with Pakistan. A war with the US on one side and Russia and China on the other side would be frightening.

I say we all blame the Brits and make them solve this and the Middle East thingy.

The Brits forced ethnic partition on the Muslim-run India as a requirement for Indian independence. Two separate Muslim areas and India.

So I blame the Brits. Have fun fighting a war without aircraft carriers, UK.

I'm going to quote Dennis Miller from when he was funny:

"We should leave and hang a sign on the door of the embassy that says, 'Back when you get your shiat together.'"

Nothing you said was false, per se, but the assumptions going in regarding their connections and likelihood are fanciful.

Karzai just got the shiat end of the stick.
No matter which terrorist nation he puts himself on the side of, someone with the resources and ability to will try to assassinate him.
Still doesn't mean it was a smart choice to choose the third world terrorist nation against the first world one.

I have to wonder if this is just PR to appease the general population of Afghanistan who in all likelihood hate America.

Just a sec.

We rolled Afghanistan. Hard. God knows how many causalities on both sides. But we still rolled it.
We're still in there. Assisting with their government, assisting with their security, running raids.

Then they say if we hit another country (which is a bad idea, although if we did, Pakistan should be high on the list - they go under their country ceases to exist) they'll go to war *with us.*

Pull out, wipe off the lube, and get ready to reinsert.
Time to quit playing nation building and to start playing "you no longer have technology capable of using the oil the middle east is known for."

Lord above... sighs.

TheShavingofOccam123: The Brits forced ethnic partition on the Muslim-run India as a requirement for Indian independence. Two separate Muslim areas and India.

I don't think that is exactly right. While the partition was mandated in the 1947 act that granted Indian independence, the partition was a response to agitation by the Muslim League.

It wasn't so much "forced" as it was a concession granted to get agreement on a contentious bill.

True.

But also, if a dude who lived six towns over beat up the shiathead down the block, and then started accusing your neighborhood of being assholes who supported the asshole he just stomped - even if you didn't, wouldn't your neighborhood band together?

All politics is local, and there is a lot of shared identity across that border. If Canada and Russia started a UN slapfight, you think we'd ally with the Russkies?

Not that a war with Pakistan would happen. We still have Iran, and whoever gets elected in 2012 can't be dumb enough to open a two-front war, right?

// right?

Rather than break northern India up into separate countries, the British colonial authority demanded that it being independent as a single unified whole which has caused endless problems through the decades.

The Taliban was created by Pakistan's ISI. See Peter Tomsen's, "The Wars of Afghanistan," above.

TheShavingofOccam123: A war with Pakistan would really suck.

Only if we were dumb enough to be baited into a conventional war. A modern war against Pakistan would be a laugh riot for the Armed Forces. In short: JDAMs, JDAMS everywhere.

China is aligned with Pakistan and technically still at war with India over territory China invaded.

Yes, but China's not easily baited. They would make the right noises, perhaps provide a little material and expert support, but otherwise let their proxies do the heavy lifting.

India would love to settle a score with Pakistan.

This would be the real flashpoint. Two nuclear armed nations that would just as soon cut each other's throats as speak to them. We might have to shift to conventional support if India went all zergrush on Pakistan.

A war with the US on one side and Russia and China on the other side would be frightening.

Russia would be the same as China -- make the right noises, throw some stuff at the Afghans / Pakis, and leave them do to the killing and dying. Two parts weapons test bed, two parts beholden neighbor state, add a dash of putting the dizness to the US and shake vigorously.

Its still a dumb idea. Its not like the US has so much money lying they can afford to start yet another pointless war overseas.

You could spend the money on domestic infrastructure, education, and (useful) job creation, etc....

... of you could spend a boatload of cash on weapons, then spend a bunch more money taking them to the other side of the planet to blow brown people up and cultivate another generation of animosity against the "imperialistic" US.

But hey, at least the military industrial complex and their political benefactors will be happy right?

Pretty much. Karzai has a long history of doing and saying whatever he thinks is best suited to keep himself in power. At this point he probably thinks, "Well the US is probably leaving, so I better make Pakistan my BFF so someone will protect my ass, and the radicals in my own country will cool their jets a little."

The problem for Karzai is he also has a long history of poor judgement and being flat out wrong, a trend he hasn't reversed with this latest comment. The damage is already done. No matter what he says or does to pander to the extreme elements in his own country, he's farked once the US leaves.

We're still cleaning up the consequences of the last time we pulled out of Afghanistan before it was ready to function on its own. Karzai probably thinks he can bank on that, though his predecessor probably thought that too.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I think it would be disastrously bad, the equivalent to taking an already taut rubber band and throwing razor blades at it. A reasoned response to Pakistan and Afghanistan declaring war on us would be, "Uh huh, you guys do that. Have fun," then literally patting their UN envoys on the head in public. A few cruise missiles and a JDAM or three dozen if they started getting too rowdy. ZERO exposure of US troops to actual danger. Depending upon the actual assets used, the cost of deployment might be almost completely offset by the cost of maintenance and readiness.

ISTR that one of the things that made toppling the Taliban interesting while it lasted was that alliances shifted fairly frequently, everyone was for sale, and nobody stayed bought. More of the same. Afghanistan is never going to be self-supporting or stabilized, the cultural underpinnings are just not there for that to happen. We're throwing good money after bad, and we should just leave. If somebody tops Karzai 15 minutes after we do, that's just icing on the cake. Mealy-mouthed, corrupt, incompetent motherfarker.

JAYoung: Before we leave, give every woman in Afghanistan a Kalashnikov and 1,000 rounds of ammo.

I've said all along, we should have been focusing on creating a feminist rebel force there. Some women are always going to be like Tea Partiers - they are going to turn against the people who really are their own kind for a few crumbs of power. Look at the women who enforce female circumcision. Look at the women who try to convince other women to become suicide bombers. But, there should have been female special forces groups who were on the lookout for dissatisfied women. They should have fed the dissatisfaction - not a hard to do when women are treated worse than animals. The women in the U.S. special forces would have been living examples of what women can do, and they should have trained the Afghani women to blow the shiat out of any man trying to keep women down.

THAT would have transformed the area.

2011-10-23 03:11:29 PM
We probably told Karzai to say that.
