That was some bachelor party, Mr. Solo.

So, who is Illya Kuryakin? James McAvoy or Paul Bettany or Alan Tudyk or . Or will they turn it into a woman, which could be very cool, too. Either Christina Hendricks or Abbie Cornish. And THRUSH? John Stattery? Greg Kinnear? David Tennant? I love the casting game ...

Regardless: it's Steven Soderberg, so I'm in.

Only two ways this can play out. They stay faithful to the original material, which they then discover wasn't nearly as good as they fondly remembered it from their adolescence (see: Charlie's Angels; A-Team).

Or they ditch everything from the original except the name, discover that nothing of value was lost... and nothing of value was left, either (see: Mission Impossible; The Saint).

And when I say "see" I mean "don't see". Seriously.

I liked The Fugitive. They should use that movie as a model for adapting TV shows to movies.

But, but .. Robert Vaughn and David McCallum are still available.

There is an NCIS episode where Abby asks Gibbs how Duckie looked when he was younger. "Illya Kurakin" was the answer. I laughed heartily, but had to explain it to some younger friends.

czetie: And when I say "see" I mean "don't see". Seriously.

I dunno. All four of the movies you listed, while they aren't classics, are decent. I actually really enjoyed A-Team, and felt that M:I captured the spirit of the original pretty well. The Saint, well, I have a soft spot for Val Kilmer action flicks. And Charlie's Angels was just fun.

My mother liked David McCallum more, so she wants to know who will play his character.

I thought the remake of Get Smart they did a few years ago was pretty good.

I would love to see Alan Tudyk in that role. Cooper is ripe for a good fonging.

He got an interesting shout-out on Mad Men; he inspired Don Draper's daughter's first "special feeling down there."

I think the only thing that makes it work is to play it straight in the 60's setting, everybody loves that look and style.

dugitman: I liked The Fugitive. They should use that movie as a model for adapting TV shows to movies.

The Fugitive was a blatant disaster while it was being made. Harrison Ford says that they had no idea each day what the script would be. All involved were amazed how well it turned out.

If Soderbergh directs he, he may be able to make it work even in a contemporary setting. Check out "The Limey", which is his take on the 60s British gangster film.

Considering it's Soderbergh who made one of the best remakes in recent years, I'm going to wait and see.

Also, he's not remaking a masterpiece. The Man From Uncle was always kinda cheesy. It's not like it was Robocop.

Yeah, that Steven Soderbergh, so much the "TV dulled mental midget."

Someone take away this moron's nail gun before he hurts himself.

Had a lot of that stuff too. Looking back, the closest things to TV role models I had were Ilya Kuryakin and Buddy Sorrell, Morey Amsterdam's character on the Dick Van Dyke Show.

Heh...watch the extras on the dvd. It's HILARIOUS just how much the director didn't get along with the art director. (I may be misremembering...it may have been the costume lady.)

Yeah . . . no . . . . that's asking the guy that raped my childhood to come back for seconds . . . I'll have to politely take a pass on that. It looked to me like that director didn't get along with the actors, scriptwriter, or anyone involved in the production.

Oh no, I just IMDB-ed the director. Worse than I thought, she was the "hot" chick from Hill Street Blues. Her knees are waaaaaaaaaaaaay too sharp.

I think he's got one or two more movies to do before he retires. And this is now a TV series, though it looks like it would have been a feature if Clooney had remained attached.

My brother and I had the U.N.C.L.E. guns too. Loved running around the neighborhood with those, looking for THRUSH agents and opening Channel D and whatnot.

The episode was "The Meat Puzzle". Actually, it was Kate who asked the question. Not that it matters. I got quite a chuckle out of it, too.

///my NCIS geekery is showing. Don't care; love that show. I'm watching it now on USA.

I had one. It was a an automatic pistol that you could attach a long barrel, scope and a rifle stock to.

And if she wasn't a person with sexual impulses you wouldn't be here today.

(this is of course provided that she birthed you in the way the majority of humans are birthed).

Yeah, but no. All of them are cheesy summer action flicks in their own right, decent enough by the standards of that genre, i.e. somewhere between Bond and Bourne. The point is, none of them gained anything other than name recognition from being based on an existing "property".

I do have to disagree with you about M:I, though. To me the spirit of the original was a team of uniquely skilled individuals exploiting deception and misdirection as much as anything else to manipulate their targets, not a lone superagent sticking exploding gum to the windshield of a helicopter chasing a Eurostar train through the Channel Tunnel. It could have been any generic action hero.

My favorite guilty pleasure is Burn Notice, which personally I think is much more true to the spirit of M:I
