Analysts say the changes could be part of a move to get the email service ready to be integrated with Google+.

They did that like 3 months ago. I don't have all of these features but this all sounds like crap I've had beta access to for a few months, including the clean new design.

Looks nice. Changes are between minor and major but they're all easy to use or subtle. That's how an update should be done.

2011-10-22 06:05:38 PM
I don't care about this. I'm more worried about what they are going to do with Google Reader within the week. They are going to integrate it with Google+.

2011-10-22 06:06:45 PM
The very nature of the redesign is allowing the user to resize various panes. The Fark redesign placed everything in the inner 40% or so with no option to resize to use the extra space.

Blogs? Fine. This isn't just a blog.

I like it. Looks better than the rather plain jane look it has now.

This. No mention of how it will affect Apps users, too, which worries me.

As for the Gmail redesign-- looks like they've addressed every problem I've had with the preview themes, and I hope they roll it out soon. I'm guessing it's 2-3 months away at the earliest, though.

I'm not positive if I'll prefer the revamp over the current iteration but nothing in that video jumps out at me as screamingly bad.

If you're going to use that headline meme it really should be at least partially applicable.

FTA: Kerravala said he thinks Google is getting ready to integrate its email service with its social networking service.

Good Lord, I hope not.

"With Facebook, you just pop in and out of it," he added. "If they integrate Google+ and Gmail, then Google becomes the place to go to start your day, and you stay in it all day."

Um, NO. I guess I've reached my Luddite threshold. No FB, no Twitter, no LinkedIn, and no MySpace. (They Websense all that at work, and so I can't opt out of all the darned invitations.)

As for the changes they show in the video, I'm good with what I saw, I guess. Don't care for the "more like a conversation," thanks. They already do this with GMail on my phone, and sometimes I only want to delete ONE message, NOT the whole "conversation." The whole Google Buzz thing left a VERY bad taste.

You can delete individual messages in gmail, very easily. That's an edge case anyway, it's much nicer to not have to read through the same 50 paragraphs of bullshiat per email because bad email clients get people in the habit of inline responses.

Turn off conversation view.

I do have Conversation View turned off. Don't get it on my web Gmail, but for some reason, I get it on my phone. I've looked at the settings, tried deleting and re-registering the GMail account on the phone, etc. Also, for awhile, all the phone messages were marked as "Important" even though I had that turned off, too. That seems to have cleared up on its own.

Anyway, this isn't a GMail support forum. Time to search those again.

Barakku That's an edge case anyway,

But, it's MY "edge case," dang it :-)

None of it has been a deal-breaker yet. I like Gmail and the Google Calendar integration with my phone.
Just wish I could talk Mrs. Un into a different calendar viewer (like Jorte) so we cold make good use of a shared Google "family calendar."

"I think email usage has peaked and people will use social media more -- Twitter, Facebook messages, Google+," said Zeus Kerravala

Yes, largely because email technology has regressed significantly over the last ten years. Gmail is better than Hotmail, et al, but it's not a good email system, just a convenient one for minimal-duty stuff. It doesn't handle contacts well, doesn't do threading well, doesn't understand the difference between a new message and an unread one, doesn't use labels or folders well, doesn't do group contacts or mailing lists well, doesn't manage attachments well.

Integration is the poison that ruins most apps. Apps that work together well -- that's a good idea. Just like how it should be easy to connect a DVR to the TV, and they should use the same kind of power outlet as the toaster. Apps that are combined into one -- that's often a really stupid idea. Just like how the DVR and toaster should not be built into the TV.

For me, Gmail seems to be moving steadily in the wrong direction. The recent notion of the app being able to guess which emails are important to me is a good example. It's a terrible guesser, and it just makes more work for me. Let's not have more of that nonsense.

They're removing the native sharing features and replacing them with G+ sharing features. Which I have no problem with since the native sharing features were pretty worthless.

Not an issue for me since I get all my GMail thru Thunderbird. Very easy to set up. Or I get it on my phone.

I do the same thing, very convenient, POP3 through Thunderbird. The only downside is I can never remember the password to any of the email accounts if I need to use the web mail.

Hey, Google, here's a few suggestions for GMail's new design:

1) Make sure that there's no way to mark new e-mails as read, except for actually reading them.

2) Make sure that already-read e-mails from months ago pop up as new, and make them as indistinguishable as possible from actual new and unread e-mails as possible.

3) When people demand you change these features, completely ignore them for years on end.

That way, the design will be completely consistent with your YouTube Subscription Box interface!

I still get tricked by the "preview" button working backwards now.

well, that's how my wife, and several other of my freinds do it, so... meh.

I personally either uses thunderbird or out look depending on what OS I want to be messing with at that point, and on the Droid phone, its just matter of switching between the account I set up for the phone, or the one I set up for my desktop..

the browser based Email client has never been a concern to me really.

This. They made the preview a theme several months ago and I stuck with it. Some of the buttons along the top appear to have changed, but otherwise it looks the same. The same theme is also available for Calendar.

Sounds like more control for users. Clearly the Gmail team knows what side their bread is buttered on. The only conceivable downside to this is that features mean inertia, and empowered users can make it hard to adapt to the next great thing. I'm not too worried about that at the moment, though. They're just making the product better. And isn't it nice that they're still acting like the "product" is the service they offer you, instead of you being the product they sell? I may not be their ultimate customer, but they're still paying me the respect that companies normally pay to customers. That's refreshing on the web, where the trend these days is to make really clear to users that their desires and interests have no relevance to product development. Yay Gmail.

I have a button at the top of gmail that says "Mark as read" all I have to do is click the checkbox and it's done. Not sure if it was already there or one of the google labs add-ons.
