dalbuc: I normally won't go all hipster on things (I'm about 2 decades past my hipster freshness date) but Coldplay is music for people who have given up on trying to like music. I don't think I can hate Coldplay because any song I've heard I've pretty much forgotten 5 minutes later it is so non-descript.

I think it's music for people who think Radiohead is too weird, Catherine Wheel too noisey, and don't know who Brian Eno is beyond "U2's producer" (if even that). I also don't hate Coldplay, but damned if they aren't boring as hell. I was pretty annoyed when Yellow was played constantly, though.

Definitely the shallow sheep factor. Definitely.

Hillbilly Jim: Pandora's Litterbox: Maybe it's just because I'll listen to Johnette sing the words found on a placemat at Denny's. (new window)

That's pretty and twisted.

Indeed.
It served as my intro to the existence of the music of Coldplay and, to this day, is still the only thing associated with the band that I can claim to honestly like. The rest of their discography just kind of evaporates into ephemera upon hitting my eardrums and I've open-mindedly listened to all of their albums from beginning-to-end many times. Nothing else in their catalog seems to stick to the ol' memory. It's pleasant enough, I guess, while the song is playing. I'm not aroused to feelings of anger or disgust or hatred like a lot of music I've listened to over the years. But after its over...just...nothing. Completely unmemorable.

I can understand parts of the hate, but A Rush Of Blood to the Head is a great album.

I like Coldplay. The trick is to never read the lyrics because they make no farking sense whatever.
