unicron702: I'll just listen to "Pyramid Song" by Radiohead if it's all the same. I know I beat a dead horse, but Coldplay is just the Radiohead cover band that it big.

I wish to endorse this statement!

Tor_Eckman: fusillade762: I'm partial to the last track on the album. You know, the one with the wide grooves just before the label starts.

/the Romans were known for many things, their cavalry was not one of them

So we are judging bands on the historical accuracy of their lyrics now.

Good to know.

This morning I had a discussion with someone about the historical inaccuracies in a 1960s pop hit pertaining to the Revolutionary War.

What a bunch of hipster haters in here.

The Scientist is great, especially the video for it. Violet Hill is a close second and I have to give Clocks credit for being the first Coldplay song that I heard, and because the instrumental part of it is awesome.

Nope, didn't work.

Coldplay isn't terrible. Also, those that claim that only hipsters hate Coldplay are probably the same ones that hate bands they think are hipster. But whatever, people are entitled to their own opinion. I don't love Coldplay, but I think they're pretty good. I like "Violet Hill", "Viva La Vida", and "Clocks" the most.

Since Sarcastica75 came out liking one album and others stated it too, I'll add to "The Scientist" love. It was the first Coldplay song I heard, while in a shop over speakers. Took me a while to find out who sang it.

For the most part, I like Coldplay songs until I start actually paying attention to the lyrics. The lyrics rub me the wrong way. On that border of being almost good but then something non sequitur and/or juvenile gets penned in.

Rule the World - with Mirrormask music video

Mirrormask is a guilty pleasure, something about it reminds me of The City of Lost Children. And this Coldplay song works fairly decently with this fan compilation.

Song sounds decent to me if I don't focus on the parts. Towards the end they went the Kings of Leon route with the backing vocals. That highly reverbed "Whoa"s and "oh's -_- meh

I listened to Parachutes on an irregular basis when it came out. First time I heard them on the radio I thought it was Dave Matthews.

And Cat Stevens used the same melody in Foreigner Suite in 1973. Did Satriani steal it from him?
Link

Personally, I think it's just an example of musicians being unconsciously influenced by what they've heard in the past and inadvertently re-using bits of it. In this case it's just the current popularity of hating Coldplay that causes people to froth about it. In the end even if they DID borrow, it's not really the end of the world or proof of any lack of quality or ability in Coldplay, OR Mr. Satriani. Hell, Led Zepplin ripped off entire songs, and they're still widely considered one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

/somehow I find it possible to like all threesongs and all three musicians/bands.

I don't own any of their albums, which is funny, cuz I'm a fan of that big, anthemic, atmospheric sound that some bands do (U2, The Killers, etc.), yet I have most of their singles on my iPod. My favorite would have to be "Lost", and I dig "Talk", "Fix You", and I remember "Yellow" being stuck in my head forever when it first came out. I'm just afraid that I'm gonna give in, download all the albums, and be bored with everything except the singles I already own.

/Does listening to Coldpaly really make you gay, or are Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd just a couple of mean bullies?

I've actually seen them live, so I guess I should REALLY be ashamed of myself.

Parachute tour. Wasn't mind blowing or anything, but they were very good live, and Mrs Eckman and I had quite a fine time.

And I really have tried to like Radiohead, but I don't. Figure that one out.

i confess to liking one coldplay song on accident - it was the soundtrack on a youtube monatge of great lance armstrong cycling clips from a few years ago -
Link (new window)
i put it on a cycling playlist for intervals, i guess i like songs that build up like that . . . but i didn't even know who it was till i checked the lyrics and then it was too late to hate the song, A Message, out of pure "farksnark" so it's still on an ipod . . . i can dislike the band without suffering through all their "music" because Gwyneth and her husband name their kids stuff like Turnip and Quince Marmalade, and plan to name their next offspring Klondike Bar regardless of gender . . . maybe i would be more inclined to sample more of their stuff if they named their crotchfruits after furniture, like End table and Sofa bed . . . probably not

2011-10-23 01:47:18 AM
i don't know if the other band mates name their kids bizarre stuff, like water fowl species - Loon, Grebe, or Merganser . . . i suppose it's possible they name them after saints, like Jerome the Incredibly Leperous, or Catherine of the Eternal Yeast Infection . . . this may have some bearing on the quality of their music . . . do the members of Nickleback name their wee ones after fishing lures? it wouldn't surprise me

2011-10-23 02:43:18 AM
I normally won't go all hipster on things (I'm about 2 decades past my hipster freshness date) but Coldplay is music for people who have given up on trying to like music. I don't think I can hate Coldplay because any song I've heard I've pretty much forgotten 5 minutes later it is so non-descript.

2011-10-23 02:56:53 AM
anybody else think that "Violet Hill" reminds them of KC's "Ladies of the Road" mixed with the middle solo portion of "Easy Money" ?

This is exactly what I'm saying.

Also, as I said earlier, the melody in Viva that they are accused of stealing from a 2004 JS song also shows up in a 1970's Cat Stevens song, so...

Well, I don't buy that it is "unconscious" or "inadvertent"; they've boasted about intentionally swiping (and they seem like a particularly calculating franchise).

But I don't want my comment to be misunderstood. I dislike their stupid song independently of whatever plagiarizing they've done.
