Good for you, Pete. You make us oldsters proud!

Wow. Saw the guy with Arlo back in the early 80s. He seemed unbelievably old then. The man's a machine.
Kick em in the grill, Pete.

2011-10-22 09:41:01 AM
Rock on, Pete!

2011-10-22 09:42:44 AM
I guess the protestors like that old time rock and roll.

Also in the news, Pete Seeger is still badass.

2011-10-22 12:30:46 PM
Ha, this old guy will REALLY be able to teach the OWS hippies about shiatting all over the place. Talk about the perfect Sensei

2011-10-22 12:35:10 PM
If Pete Seeger would have majored in something useful instead, he wouldn't have $200k in student loan debt right now. Get a job, hippie!

Would literary be okay? I was seriously considering doing an Enjolras costume and going down to wave a red flag. If I were ten years younger and had no kids, I would have done it on like day 3.

It would be ok if the police all dressed up like Javert.

In fact, it would be awesome.

Pete's one of my heroes. He fought for causes like women's/black/gay rights, environmental protection, etc. long before they became popular issues, not to mention how important his music was to various social and political movements from the '30's on. Still is--he played at Obama's inauguration. Everybody knows "Turn, Turn, Turn," "We Shall Overcome," etc.

And he's got a pair: Pete was one of the only people called before the HUAC to not plead the 5th, and instead defiantly pleaded the 1st. Also, when he was asked to perform Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" at Obama's inauguration, he accepted only on the condition he be allowed to sing the original oft-omitted and "controversial" lyrics. And they let him.

In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple;
By the relief office, I'd seen my people.
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking,
Is this land made for you and me?

Hell of a musician, hell of a human being, and it's incredible he's still going strong.

Wait. I thought that was supposed to be 99 percent.

This is so far out. While my kids were growing up I sang his songs to them and hoped the music would help chart their lives. I like to think that's part of why all six have pretty good heads on their shoulders. That and the spankings.

Actually, no. While Egypt is still saddled with interim military rule, the dreaded SSIS is gone. The new MAR2011 constitution is the law of the land. Full parliamentary elections begin in November.

Mubarak was a scumbag. He may have been OK with certain US policies, but that just makes him an American toady scumbag. Good riddance.

You may feel differently. You may enjoy living under dictatorial control. Many people don't.

elffster: andddd we have to hear about this from the UK news? nice move, American media.....

the OWS movement has had to find ways to route around the media blackout here in the US. its a shame too, but in some ways it's actually helped. by refusing to cover the protests, they've essentially ceded the field to the protesters, at least as far as information flow goes anyways.

yeah, but the GOP would rather have a US toady scumbag dictator running the show than see a democratically elected leader hostile to US interests running the country. So do we support the dictator (who we can purchase rather cheaply) or do we cheer for democracy and freedom and put up with someone who hates our guts (but is ultimately good for their country)?

My more Republican friends would prefer the dictator over the populist.

He probably brings a lot of perspective with him. Times change but the basic issues stay the same. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness stands on the foundation of food, shelter, and gainful employment.

How exactly are they going to fark it up for you? Increasing taxes on the wealthy, thereby forcing your CEO to cut your job so he can protect his own bloated salary?

Thats a pretty good point, I just find it sad that the media has their heads up their asses so far they cant see the writing on the wall. Not that the news directors/editors/idiots in charge will understand it, they wont.

I know the news orgs have been screwed up for a long time, I just wish that once in a great while the clouds would part and the sun would shine in onto their little minds and let them see things (and report things) as they really are.

IMO, the nation is in very bad shape and only a hand full of folks have been saying that all along. At the rate were are sinking into the shiatter it really doesn't seem like much longer and we really will be a 4th rate nation of has-beens supporting a tiny minority of rich assholes who just need a bullet sundae. With bad bridges, sick folks all over the place and no jobs to be had.

Now shut up and play ur gee-tar ;-)

for what its worth, I think a lot of folks in the news industry DO get it. But you hit a key point - the editors and people in charge are the ones who control the flow of data. they don't want OWS movements to succeed. the rank and file just want to cover the story but aren't permitted to do so.
