More than 16,000 people die from liver disease every year in the UK

140,000 die each year from cancers.

44,600 die each year from heart disease.

But go ahead and come down on ALCOHOL, the only thing that lets a body get by in a world full of assholes.

Easy, give me three days at work that don't require drinking afterwards and I'm there

2011-10-22 07:32:00 AM
Three days you say? Is that on average over the year? Because I usually abstain for at least 8 hours a day so that's 4 months, plus 8 hours more for 5 days a week so that's another .. um ..

So is liver disease actually worse than brain damage?

2011-10-22 07:33:34 AM
This is good news. I'm all about free alcohol.

2011-10-22 07:38:35 AM
Do rolling days count? Because I've been known to not even start drinking again until the night after the night after that morning.

I'm drinking right now, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies...

I'm betting more die in traffic accidents each year too. Keeping my booze, don't drive, think i'm getting the better deal.

I only binge drink on the weekends, so I'm good.

And it's not like you know in recent years certain places have either restricted, or banned the use of Trans-fans, and certain kinds of cooking ingredients known to cause such problems either. It's unimpossible!

But go ahead, doglover let the hyperbole be your guide.

Do these physicians have any evidence? Has there been any controlled studies (or even any observational, epidemiologic studies) that quantify a reduction in quantity and degree of hepatic disease correlated to three EtOH-free days a week? TFA did not cite any.

Just because they're physicians doesn't mean they're not talking out their ass.

I get 7 alcohol-free days a week (yes, the critically-endangered straightedge Farker), and now my doctor tells me I'm still farking up my liver, and to not drink soda or eat oily foods.

There's a thing called non-alcoholic liver something-or-other. That long YouTube video about how fructose is evil explains how it works.

So it's more like, doctors now recommend three days a week free of anything you'd actually want to put in your mouth.

I only drink on my golf and all inclusive holidays. When I say drink I mean every waking hour during the holiday. Total Zombie state.
As soon as I come home I don't drink or think about alcohol at all.
I retired from work at the end of 2007 and never think about drinking unless there is pending holiday. I would rather eat my calories than drink them at home and so when the holidays come up I do both which probably shows a huge lack of restraint.

Melody Petersen: The study estimating that 100,000 Americans die each year from their prescriptions looked only at deaths from known side effects. That is, those deaths didn't happen because the doctor made a mistake and prescribed the wrong drug, or the pharmacist made a mistake in filling the prescription, or the patient accidentally took too much. Unfortunately, thousands of patients die from such mistakes too, but this study looked only at deaths where our present medical system wouldn't fault anyone. Tens of thousands of people are dying every year from drugs they took just as the doctor directed. This shows you how dangerous medications are.

Back in the 70s, my doctor told me to have 2 drinks per day for my heart health. Being very health-conscious and an over-achiever sort, I considered myself good until January 29, 2057. Now they tell me I have to take 3 days per week off. Can somebody do the math and let me know how long I'm good for now?

Also, when the government people come up with their 'units', why don't they use 'units' that people actually consume? Who drinks 125 ml of wine at a time?

Safe: The client company isn't likely to get sued into bankruptcy
Effective: The client company stands to make billion$ in profit$

Mr. Right: Back in the 70s, my doctor told me to have 2 drinks per day for my heart health. Being very health-conscious and an over-achiever sort, I considered myself good until January 29, 2057. Now they tell me I have to take 3 days per week off. Can somebody do the math and let me know how long I'm good for now?

I think you are fine as long as you don't have more than 2 drinks per day. The problem is people usually drink a lot more than 2 drinks when they do drink. A pint, is more than one drink. Also, a lot of the good beers are stronger than the standard 3.5%. If you are throwing back 2 dogfish head 60 minutes (at 6%) that's over 3 drinks per day. As a result, if you are drinking higher alcohol craft brews, it's probably best to just have one a day (saves money too).

Basically the 3 days off is taking into account that people can't measure standard units/stick to 2 drinks and thus makes so that people are sticking to roughly 14 units/week.

I believe the noted historian Stross also concluded that the highway system was some sort of anti-summoning glyph designed to prevent a mass summoning of things that live at the edge of the Mandelbrot. I cite Concrete Jungle, Jennifer Morgue and Atrocity Archives as my primary sources.

Just watched it. Insomnia you know.

Knew HFCS was bad but not that simple fructose essentially equals alcohol without the buzz in terms of liver metabolism and fat generation. Wow.

I lost my sweet tooth long ago and stopped drinking sodas a year ago. Lost 15 lbs in a few months (looked "puffy" not fat). Now with regular excercise I feel a hellava lot better.

Now for teh secks. Like playing bridge, I need to find a partner. I already have a good hand.
