Would you turn down a guaranteed salary over the course of 3 movie productions? They should've told him they were making an EPIC Muppets Trilogy about the mutant origin of ANIMAL and how he would ultimately devour the universe... and eat drums.

Yeah, but that was just a voice to him. A paycheck.
The Muppets were his life. He was a co-creator of many of the different characters and worked with Muppet-related projects for decades.

He's right. And if anyone would know how Jim Henson would feel about something Muppet-related, it'd be Frank Oz.

Disney's f*cking with Henson's vision in order to make more money. Fart-shoes? Really?? That's a shame.

So what is the title of the new movie? Muppets take a dump on jim hensons grave?

I've only watched the trailer, but aren't they kind of lampshading the fart shoes as in...we don't stoop low to make cheap jokes?

I wonder what he thinks of the viral videos on YouTube and elsewhere? See the "MuppetsStudios" channel there (please, not the VEVO one!). I always thought that those captured the essence of the Muppets quite well, while still bringing them into this century (Statler & Waldorf doing their thing from the other side of a PC almost as ancient as they are [note the original IBM PC clicky-tactile keyboard, the primitive mouse, etc.], as seen from inside their monitor, with a set done as a typical old retired man's den [lots of old books on shelves, etc.] behind them, was a stroke of genius − they do this on almost every video, and some shorts are just them doing that in response to other famous YouTube videos).

In defense of Oz, the movie looks really lame.
/Love The Muppets.

Oz hasn't performed as his Muppet characters in ages. He could probably have inherited the creative side of the franchise if he'd wanted to. But he didn't.

I don't really think it's out of character for Fozzie to have fart shoes. He had a whoopee cushion in the Muppet Caper. I think people are making the Muppets into sweet, fuzzie saints. To clear this up, here a a few clips from the TV show:

Muppets selling their soul to Satan? (pops - 5:00 and 7:30ish)

Kinda dark. (new window)

Miss Piggy butt of oral sex joke on the Daily Show. (new window)

specifically Muppet veterans like Frank Oz who believe that Jason Segel's take on the beloved characters sacrifices their integrity for the sake of making cheap jokes,

It's... It's like they never actually watched The Muppet Show.

Rev. Skarekroe: Oz hasn't performed as his Muppet characters in ages. He could probably have inherited the creative side of the franchise if he'd wanted to. But he didn't.

I should add that I agree with him.
This film looks like a bunch of toilet and fart jokes. I just think he could've been a guiding force after Henson died instead of directing Eddie Murphy movies and whatnot.

2011-10-22 02:00:16 PM
I wonder what he thought of all the crappy Muppets projects that tanked over the years and led to the Muppets practically fading into obscurity. Were those scripts true to the characters?

2011-10-22 02:01:09 PM
Muppets are funny. Jason Segel isnt' funny. His involvement single-handedly removes any interest for me to watch it.

2011-10-22 02:03:11 PM
Sad trifecta accomplished.

2011-10-22 02:09:15 PM
Whereas I have to give Segal props for reviving the Muppets, he's not a writer, nor is he funny, he's more like a super fan of the Muppets.

What sucks is that when this new Muppet movie bombs (oh, and it will) then stupid Disney will put the Muppets back on ice.*

The only plus to the movie is that Amy Adams is in it.

In Frank Oz's defense, he did ask Lucas "couldn't you just CGI Yoda," which Lucas did. Besides Lucas and Oz go back almost forty years. Oz has no allegiance to the Muppets anymore because it's NOT the same troupe of talented people running the Muppets anymore.

Well, Dracula's Lament was amusing.

That doesn't mean he needed to do a friggin Muppets movie, though.

And yet he participated in Muppets in Space?

When I saw the trailer I wondered what was up with Fozzie's and Miss Piggy's voices. That explains it...

When you're responsible for doing things like this and this, it makes perfect sense when you don't want to move them from smart-yet-goofy-and-fun to "generic kids comedy that happens to star muppets".

I love "Muppets take Manhattan" - my favorite out of the bunch.

...and then I saw Muppets from Space a couple years ago. The franchise is going downhill fast, something Frank Oz has probably known for a long time.

This is the first Muppet movie I've had even the slightest bit of interest in seeing since the 80's. It looks like they made the Muppets less Disney and more adult. I personally encourage that as I didn't like what Disney did with them. Then again, I like Jason Segal, I loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I still watch How I Met Your Mother so this pairing doesn't bother me.

Isn't Frank normally unhappy? I don't think it's an unusual state for him.

I dislike the prequels myself, but if you're going to have Yoda, you're going to need Frank Oz to do his voice.

IMHO, the fans would have been outraged if they got another person to do Yoda's voice.

There's a scene in "Innocent Blood" (also directed by John Landis) where the Frank Oz (playing the pathologist) is chasing the "dead" mob boss (Robert Loggia) who is now a newly risen vampire. Someone yells at the pathologist to catch him & the pathologist yells back, "You catch him!", in Yoda's voice.

Please everyone remember that the Muppets have always been appealing, always been cute, but they have never once been funny. Now they might get a chance to actually be entertaining for once.

THIS. I hate that cartoon, so much that I have to divert my attention from The Muppets Take Manhattan when Piggy has her Muppet Babies fantasy sequence. Ugh.

Remember the final sitcom series that Lucille Ball tried to make (Life With Lucy)? She actually believed that the audiences of the 80's would go for the same sitcom formula schtick that she did in the 60's. The show was a disaster and was quickly cancelled.

Sorry Frank, but there's just no way for the 80's Muppets to be viable in today's world.

Even Mickey was changed once in a while. Perhaps it's time for Kermit to do the same.

Yeah I watched the Muppet Show for the first time a few years ago with my wife (a longtime fan) and it's pretty much pun after pun with the occasional break with the swedish chef.
